Title: NURS 6003: Networking Opportunities

My Goals and University Vision and Mission

My name is Tara Tillman. I live in a small town in South Mississippi. I have been in nursing for 12 years, with most of those years in rural emergency medicine. In this field, I have seen first-hand the adverse effects of limited primary care in rural low-income areas. My professional goal is to become a full-time family nurse practitioner and serve the rural low-income community where I live. Thus, my academic goal is to obtain my Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) with Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) specialization. Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change aligned with my professional goal to provide positive change in the world by equipping me with the resources and knowledge to transform me into a scholar-practitioner at the highest level.Walden University College of Nursing’s mission statement is why I am confident that Walden is the right fit for my professional and academic goals. According to the Walden University College of Nursing, its mission is to dedicate excellence to nursing education. It provides programs to transform diverse nursing professionals into champions of change who will improve health outcomes and advance health equity (Walden University, 2022, Vision and Mission section, para. 12). This statement matches my professional and academic goals.

Walden MSN Program Outcomes and Perspective

Walden MSN program outcomes and perspective provide critical standards that will help me fulfill my professional and academic goals. Outcomes one, three, five, and seven are key to my professional goal to provide primary care services to rural low-income areas by offering high-quality healthcare that delivers positive social change. For my academic goal, outcomes two, four, and six will give me a solid foundation to be a scholar-practitioner through research, effective communication, and ongoing commitment to professional development and value of nursing theories and ethical principles (Walden University, 2022, Master of Science in Nursing section, para. 2).

Networking

Networking is vital because it builds trusting relationships and connections that will help me professionally and academically. Networking is necessary to succeed in today’s job market, especially for career advancement in the nursing field. US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that 70% of all jobs are found through networking (Schmidt, n.d.). According to Consumer News and Business Channel, 70% of all jobs are not published on publicly available job search sites. These statistics show that networking will be critical in gaining employment and accomplishing my professional goal of becoming a full-time family nurse practitioner (Fisher, 2019). Not only is networking necessary for employment, but it also is essential academically. Networking with help me reach my goal of graduating with my MSN- FNP by offering support and resources such as my student advisor, instructors, preceptors, classmates, and the writing center. I have already started using my networking skills to secure preceptors for my practicum portions of this program. And I will continue to use my networking skills in my clinical portion to develop a robust and trustworthy relationship with my preceptors and their faculties. As described above, networking is a primary asset for me, both professionally and academically, that I will use throughout my career and life to expand my career opportunities, gain knowledge, and develop and sustain long-term connections.

Title: NURS 6003: Networking Opportunities

My passion for the nursing profession started way back when I was only 10 years old. I would take care of my grandma, who was diabetic, by making sure that she took her diabetic medication in time, and always remind her to always monitor her blood sugar levels. I however started working as a registered nurse in 2005, in an acute healthcare setting. The lead nurse in this hospital portrayed all the leadership skills I hope to get someday. She was always compassionate, with good communication skills, and could find solutions to any problem despite the magnitude (Reynoso, Bueno, & Pavlic, 2017). She is the reason behind my inspiration for advancing my nursing education in attaining a master’s degree and become a nursing leader someday.

Upon thorough consideration of available options, I found Walden University’s mission, vision, goals, and social changes to align appropriately with my desire in advancing my education so that I could become a nursing leader. The nursing profession is evolving and as a result, I need to acquire relevant knowledge and skills for sustainable positive social change. In line with my objective, the university mission, vision, and goals are aimed at promoting and facilitating collaborative alliances, through research and community engagement in providing a sustainable positive social change (Walden University, 2020).

The main reason behind advancing my education and becoming a scholar-practitioner is to better my knowledge and experience in critical thinking and decision making to help in promoting service delivery to community members. Walden MSN Program Outcomes and perspectives are quite consistent with my professional and academic goals. For instance, the University is committed to empowering changemakers, building the community, and raising social change outcomes across the university (Walden University, 2020). These are exactly what I expect at the end of my training period.

Becoming a successful nurse has been my dream. To realize this dream, I had look for the best nursing college that would adequately prepare me for real world nursing experience. I recently graduated with BSN. While in the University, I offered tutoring to students in different classes, which was the basis for my passion in teaching. My ultimate professional goal is to become a scholar-practitioner.
