Networking Opportunities

In this discussion board I will introduce myself, discuss Walden University’s foundation in relation to my aspirations, and the importance of professional networking. It is important to understand that each nurse has a unique background that influences the care they provide. Gaining nursing experiences and creating professional relationships can provide life long positive influences impacting patient’s lives, families, and communities.

Self-Introduction

My name is Krystal Simmons. I have worked in the healthcare system for over fifteen years in various settings. Some of my favorite nursing experiences include working in the primary care setting for seven years and the medical floor for almost two years.  I live in rural southern Ohio, married with two girls. In my free time I enjoy nature by running, hiking, kayaking, and swimming.

Dreams, Missions, and Visions

The vision and mission statements Walden University stands by promotes a modern curriculum in a challenging atmosphere that collaborates with each nursing professional’s lifestyle meeting the needs of individuals, families, and communities (Walden University, 2021). My plan for school is to become a family nurse practitioner and continue working in my rural hometown. I started this journey in 2017 after watching several nursing students complete clinicals at my primary care office. In 2019 I moved from the primary care setting to the inpatient medical floor to expand on my nursing background and experience. I feel that working on the medical floor has helped me become a better leader which will enhance my nursing as a practitioner in the future. Walden University’s MSN learning outcomes lists qualities a nursing professional will possess at the end of the program which includes the ongoing commitment to professional development, enhanced communications skills, and evidenced-based high-quality healthcare delivery skills (Walden University, 2021).

Academic and Professional Networking

Starting out as a state tested nursing assistant in 2003, I have learned that continued education opportunities, new experiences, and effective communication skills are some core materials that make up good nursing professionals. With almost twenty years of service in the nursing field I have developed several professional mentors and role models who have inspired and motivated me to strive for my nurse practitioner degree. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) is just one group of professionals aimed at improving the health of the nation by supporting the advancement of the nurse practitioner role (American Association of Nurse Practitioners, 2021). Professional networking in the nursing field can take place in work and in continuing education settings. Professional networking within nursing professionals can influence healthcare systems, advance careers, and promote professional support in an ever changing, demanding profession (Schmidt, K., 2020).

In conclusion, I feel that gaining new experiences, creating new relationships, and learning to provide modern high quality evidenced based care will aide in my professional nursing development. Optimizing nursing experiences and relationships improves overall outcomes in all nursing aspects.

Week 1 Discussion Post Nurs-6003-3

Providing care to those in need is something that was instilled in me at an early age. Growing up with a single mother who has sickle cell disease, I developed an early understanding for the importance of health care and the vital role nurses play in it. It was those early childhood experiences with my mother that pushed me and helped cement my desire to become a nurse. Now 10 years strong in the nursing profession, I find myself realizing more each day that the integration of technology into nursing like so many other professions is a must for patients to receive high quality, safe and cost-effective care. Majority of the equipment I have used in the emergency rooms over the years require a minimal understanding of technology and its function in relation to the task or procedure that is to be performed. According to (Narayana Moorthi M. & Manjula R., 2018, Mobile devices, including phones and computers are becoming significant ICT tools for many activities and process of health care service delivery in both urban and rural areas, by organizations  and individuals, literates and educated. section). In my opinion, I believe that before the next decade health care technology will allow patients to receive 75% or more of their care remotely and potentially even higher now with the current pandemic of Covid-19. Due to this increased demand for health care professionals to navigate the world of technology and integrate technology in our every day lives while providing care this is why I have chosen to seek a graduate degree in nursing informatics.

Armed with my previous experience of attending Walden University for my BSN program, I know firsthand the type of online learning environment that I am facing. Walden University provides their students with the necessary tools and resources to overcome many challenges that arise as you build a road map for academic success. Over the years, since I graduated from Walden, I have gained an even greater appreciation for its mission statement and the ways that I have seamlessly woven this philosophy into my everyday nursing practice. According to (Walden University, n.d., Walden University provides career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can effect positive social change. section) The most recent example I have that comes to mind of how Walden University’s idea of being a scholar-practitioner relates with my clinical practice is the current crisis of Covid 19 testing in our emergency room. When the pandemic occurred our emergency room (ER) like many emergency rooms around the world were rapidly changing how we provided care for our patients on a daily basis. Due to the current pandemic my facility is constantly changing how we practice emergency room nursing and rely on evidence-based nursing practice to facilitate care for our patients this allows me to develop into a more well-rounded scholar-practitioner.

Throughout the test role out of Covid-19 and the testing process I collaborated constantly with my department leadership, physicians, as well as our nurse educator to stay informed with the latest evidence-based practices for administering the test. As a whole the hospital really worked on involving the nursing staff in the decision-making process and offering us the latitude to speak up and initiate how the changes affect the care of our patients and their potential risk to all health care professionals throughout the organization. In an article writing by(Sanders, 2018, These professionals perform varying combinations of three roles: research, teaching and applied field work. They have developed different work habits, ways of thinking and even ways of being than their colleagues who focus on just one of those areas in either field, and have a set of personal characteristics including being adaptive, collaborative, holistic, passionate and wise, which empower their use of self in helping their clients or patients. section).

 A contributing part of becoming a more effective scholar-practitioner lies with incorporating the outcome and perspectives of Walden’s MSN program into my professional practice. Some key points that I can readily identify within my role as an emergency room nurse are facilitating positive social change, a commitment to lifelong learning, and understanding the methods of inquiry. Each of these principles have helped me to be a more effective patient advocate as well as a nurse leader within my department.

Networking Opportunities

Introduction

           My name is and I have been a registered nurse since 2004. My background is primarily in the emergency department and level 1 trauma, I left ER 5 years ago and since then I have held positions within internal medicine, plastic surgery, home health, and pain management. I live in Arizona and have two children. In my spare time, I enjoy working out, hiking, cooking, and spending time with my girls.

Walden’s Vision, Mission, and Goals

           As an emergency room nurse, I cared for mentally ill patients several times a day, every day, and I soon realized I had a passion for this vulnerable population and that is why I am seeking a PMHNP degree. I feel my mission is aligned with Walden’s “provides a diverse community of career professionals with the opportunity to transform themselves as scholar-practitioners so that they can affect positive social change”. (Walden, 2021). As a practitioner, I hope to decrease the stigma associated with mental health and hope to help more people come forward when in need, “positive social change results in the improvement of human and social conditions”. (Walden, 2021).

Goals and Outcomes

          Walden’s MSN Program Outcomes relates to my professional and academic goals of becoming a scholar-practitioner in that I want to be part of a medical profession that helps mainstream mental health promotion, intervention, and maintenance. This MSN program outcome reflects my goal, “Evaluate health needs of diverse populations for necessary teaching/coaching functions based on specialist nursing knowledge to restore/promote health and prevent illness/injury”. (Walden University, 2021).

Networking

Networking is important because it builds relationships and creates a network of individuals that support and mentor each other throughout a lifetime. You never know whom you will need or run into down the road. I support these relationships and hold them of high value. I completely agree with this statement found in the Blue Pipes article, “In other words, a connection may be able to offer direct help or put you in contact with someone who can directly help you, but you may be able to return the favor at some point”. (Schmidt, 2018).

Who I am and What I Want to Be: based on Walden University’s Mission and Vision

I have been an RN for almost 11 years.  As an RN, I have worked in Mental Health and then went to nursing homes. I tried a pediatric practice as a triage nurse (those women made my crazy people look sane), but I have always returned to Mental Health (MH) no matter what I tried.  I am currently the RN Supervisor at an inpatient MH facility that opened only six months ago.  I have worked in MH on and off for 20 years in various capacities, from a crisis worker to the psych intake coordinator in a very busy ER.  No matter how hard I try, I can’t help but return to the MH field. That is why I am currently working on my PMHNP through Walden.

I decided on Walden because they are one of the very few online schools that offer the PMHNP program and they also came highly recommended by several of my colleagues. Two of my coworkers are attending Walden currently but are much further in their studies than I am, and one is an NP here at the facility.    While these people did have some influence on my choice of Walden, it was Walden’s SON vision and mission that pulled me in.  The idea of serving a diverse community of professionals to allow them to become scholar-practitioners was intriguing.  I also liked that Walden is interested in how they can provide their students with the knowledge to go out into the world and make a positive change (Walden University, 2019).  The SON seems to take a positive vision that their students will impact social change.  I had started my journey toward my PMHNP at Aspen University, and after only two classes realized that it wasn’t for me.  When my coworker suggested I check out Walden, I figured I had nothing to lose because I wanted to get on with my education to go out and practice as an NP.  The RN-MSN program with a PMHNP track was exactly what I was looking for to further my education.  I did not need another BS degree since I already have one in Forensic Science (a past life). The bridge courses from RN to get into the MSN program seemed feasible, so I joined up.  Now that I have completed that portion of the curriculum, I am excited to start this new journey.

My student advisor has been beneficial in this process, guiding me through the program and explaining how to balance school and work (Walden, 2019).  I also have a Facebook group that has managed to help each other through these first classes.  When we started, there were 10-12 of us in the group, and now, we are down to five, but the five of us have been there for each other through everything.  Not just supporting each other academically but also personally.  We have established a network amongst ourselves that genuinely are there for one another.  Since day one, we have said that we will be able to get through this if we do it together, and so far, we have. As described by Schmidt, n.d., we are a group of people with a common interest who help each other and share knowledge.

Since I have worked in the MH field, I have noticed that these patients don’t have many opportunities as other patients.  One of the things that I have always wanted to do was open a transitional housing facility for MH patients.  It has always bothered me throughout my career that many MH patients are discharged back to their homes with no assistance or, worse, discharged to the street with no place to go.  These individuals tend to be readmitted to our facility frequently.  If there was a place they could go that would continue to help them with their medication, give them some job skills and life skills training, they might have a better chance of caring for themselves. Even patients discharged home with family support do not always receive the type of support they need.  These homes’ goal is to help these individuals learn how to go back to living a productive life through management of their illness, goal setting, and assisting with education or employment (communityhope-nj.org, 2020). To start this type of housing, there needs to be a licensed master level professional involved for licensure of the facility.  I hope that when I complete my PMHNP program, I can be that person.  I have spoken to other professionals who want to help, and they have their networks of individuals who they feel will also be able to help.  Again, this shows how important networking can be.

I look forward to starting this journey with this course as a stepping stone for my professional goals.  I also hope that throughout this process, Walden University helps me to continue to grow and develop into a scholarly-practitioner.

Excellent discussion post. I, too, started in Labor and Delivery as that was always my dream job. I still love and miss L&D every day. However, childcare conflicts required me to transfer to a Monday-Friday office job that aligned with daycare hours. Luckily, I was placed at a pediatric primary care clinic, and I have truly loved it. Working in pediatrics has made me more aware of the desperate need for pediatric mental health practitioners. Currently, our patients have to travel over three hours for the closest pediatric mental health provider, and the wait to get them in can vary from one to two months. I think it’s terrific you are pursuing this career and wanting to bring positive social change to your facility. Positive social change improves human and social conditions by promoting the worth, dignity, and development of individuals and organizations (Walden University, 2021a). Walden’s PMH-NP program will adequately prepare you as a leader to deliver high-quality healthcare and bring about positive social change (Walden University, 2021b). 

 Networking is a great way to achieve your vision and goals. A tremendous professional nursing association you might consider joining if you are not already a member is the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA). The APNA is the largest professional organization for psychiatric-mental health nursing and could be an excellent resource to help you with wellness promotion of those with mental health issues, prevention of mental health problems, and with the care and treatment of children with psychiatric disorders (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2020).

My name is …….., and I have been a nurse for thirteen years. I was born and raised in a small rural community and still reside there today. My nursing career has consisted of Labor and Delivery and Pediatrics. I have also held leadership roles for over half of my nursing career. Living in a rural community can mean decreased access to healthcare. Therefore, my professional goal is to become a Family Nurse Practitioner to serve the healthcare needs of those in my community.

 

Walden’s vision, mission, goals, and social change initiatives align with my professional goals by providing me with the knowledge to enable me to identify the health needs of those in my community, improve the quality of patient care, and increase access to evidence-based healthcare services across the human life span to meet the needs of the individuals in my local community (Walden University, n.d.a). I plan to follow Walden’s mission of lifelong learning commitment by joining and being an active participant in professional nursing organizations to stay current with the latest evidence-based practice (Walden University, n.d.a). In becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner, I plan to use the knowledge I have gained at Walden to improve the social conditions in my community and impact positive social change (Walden University, n.d.b).

Walden University actively promotes leadership and social change among its students and graduates. Specifically, the MSN program will prepare me for my career as a Family Nurse Practitioner through the program’s learning outcomes which include leadership for cost-effective, high-quality healthcare delivery, knowledge to find and critique evidence-based research to guide my decision making, ability to assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate healthcare strategies to promote health, reduce health disparities, and decrease illness (Walden University, n.d.c). Walden’s MSN program outcomes will enable me to provide holistic, patient-centered, evidence-based care to my patients to ensure the best possible patient outcomes.

Hello, being a nurse for thirteen years has allowed you to interact with different patients and understand the role of cultural competency in healthcare delivery. On the other hand, there are goals that one may not achieve as a nurse without joining a professional group. The professional group exposes one to the research, job, and professional development opportunities and promotes quality care delivery to the patients (Busari et al., 2017). In addition, the professional groups create confidence and leadership skills in a person and these are important for nursing professionals. The Walden University mission and goal encourages one to engage measures that improve the quality of the healthcare delivered to the patients (Wei et al., 2019). Also, the institution equips one with the relevant socializing and networking skills which are critical for the nursing professional practice.

It is thrilling to learn that you are planning to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. However, it would be important if you join a professional organization that will spur your vision and ensures that you become whom you want (Litchfield et al., 2021). One would always join an organization that supports the values and goals that are consistent with their aspirations. For example, you can join the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE) which advocates for a healthy living environment. Nurses have the mandate to change the environment where people live and promote healthy behavioral practices among them. In addition, the nurse must be able to assess the environment and discern the patients’ needs which are then used to formulate appropriate nursing interventions. The experience from the professional networking and the skills acquired from Walden’s MSN program equips one with the right competencies to be a good nurse practitioner.
