Introduction

My Goals, and Walden University’s Vision and Mission

Claudine Morgan is my name. In 2014, I received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Southwestern University in Texas. I’ve been a nurse for 7 years and have experience with mental retardation and mental illness. My first nursing job was as an RN Care Manager, where I worked in the community with people who had mental retardation or mental illness. I liked this job because it allowed me to work on my caseload while also taking care of my family’s needs. After four years of working in the community with people with mental retardation, I was asked to work in the same company’s mental health clinic. Working in the clinic with psychiatrists and mental health nurse practitioners inspired me to return to school to further my education and knowledge in order to achieve my goal of becoming a Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. I spent a year working in a mental health clinic, bringing my total time with the company to 5 years.

Before returning to school, a friend advised me to work in a mental health hospital so that I could become acquainted with patients suffering from psychotic disorders and mood disorders, as well as become acquainted with their medications, before beginning school as a nurse practitioner in mental health. My current position is with Texas Health Resources in the mental health department.

When I set the goal of returning to school, I had to ensure that I could balance my time between school, work, and my family. I began looking for a school that could accommodate me and everything else I have going on in my personal life. I realized that online classes would be the best fit for me, but I needed to make another important decision: what is the best online school for me?

I applied to Walden University after researching several schools and consulting with two of my friends. I was overjoyed to learn that I had been accepted into this program.

Walden’s vision and mission complement my goal because they emphasize immediate solutions to societal challenges by advancing nurses to the greater global good. I am thrilled to expand my knowledge in my chosen field in order to shape myself into the nurse my future patients require. I want to return to school to network with different professionals, not only to improve my skills and advance my career, but also to transform lives in the community and effect positive social change. (Walden University, 2021, paragraphs 1 and 2)

First of all, I want to say how much I appreciate your dedication to a field of medicine that, in my opinion, could use so much more funding, resources, and awareness put into it. Although I do think the awareness has definitely increased in the last few years, I still feel like it is an area where so many patients can so easily fall through the cracks, and go without the treatment and help that they need. A part of this, I feel, is due to the overwhelming amount of people who do truly suffer with mental health issues. It’s not something anyone should be ashamed of, and I hope as more people express that very truth, it will become more of a supported and funded field of medicine, and patients are able to have the resources that they require more readily available to them through outpatient and inpatient facilities. I don’t express my opinions in any way shape or form to act as though I know more about this field, as a nurse. I express these opinions as someone who has had many people, family and friends, in my life, suffering from mental health issues. I truly am grateful that there are dedicated healthcare workers, as yourself, who are passionate about helping those struggling with mental health. I respect and thank you for embarking on this graduate journey to become a practitioner in a field that could truly use your compassion and dedication.

I completely agree with your perception of what networking can do for us, as professionals, and future practitioners. I think one of the most positive things that professional networking can do for us as future graduate nurses is build our relationships with future coworkers, colleagues, and even employers. While building this network, and our future professional circle, we can simultaneously use networking to remain confident in our field of studies by keeping up to date with the most current advances in medicine and healthcare, as well as maintain competency in societal issues and topics arising in health around the world.

When was the last time you read Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions and Several Steps in my Sickness—Meditation XVII?

Unless you are a student of 17th-century poetry, you may not be all that familiar with this piece by author John Donne. However, you may be much more familiar with one of its well-known phrases: “No man is an island.”

As you begin your journey toward achieving your academic and professional goals, you have a great opportunity to network with academics and professionals who can help ensure you do not travel alone. This network can help to clarify your own vision for success and can help guide you now and in the future. To paraphrase Donne, no one is an island.

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: I selected Dr. Amber Cook due to her closeness with students as an instructor. She is also highly experienced since she has worked in a variety of settings, including medical/surgical nursing, administration, mental health, care management, ED, and palliative care. Through guidance and mentorship from experienced healthcare professionals, nurses understand nursing issues better and execute them successfully when learning and during practice (Foolchand & Maritz, 2020). At the same time, Dr. Cook will be a highly valuable resource for my better understanding and clarifying questions related to instructions, nursing research, and health concepts.

Academic or Professional: Professional

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: when learning and in practice, nurses should network with like-minded individuals with different nursing skills. Due to the dynamic nature of the ever-evolving health profession, networking with association members will be pivotal in enabling me to be more aware of practice issues and what to do during the MSN program in order to become an excellent nursing professional. Nursing associations advance personal development of members and are committed to the growth of nursing profession (Gaines, 2019; Morin, 2021). They offer information and resources difficult to get from other sources. I will use my network with Jessica for mentorship, career advice, and better understanding of health issues in today’s society.

My name is Howan… I’ve had the pleasure of being a nurse for ten amazing years. My current practice is on a women’s and children unit at the local hospital in my community.
