Stigma and discrimination related to mental illnesses have been described as having worse consequences than the diagnoses. People with mental health issues are being treated differently and suffer in silent, psychiatric personnel needs to gain their trust during counselling, explores thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and seek to improve their well-being. Thornicroft et al., stated that psychotherapy paired with medication, and social contact with the community is the most effective type of intervention to improve stigma-related knowledge and most effective way to promote recovery from mental health issues (2016).

Walden university’s mission and vision for social change helps the community to receive and enjoy standard care through the creation of diverse opportunity for scholars as an agent of positive social change, this change also help the scholars to build interdisciplinary streams of social change research and practice. Walden university is committed to identifying opportunities to engage the faculty, staff, administrative leaders, and alumni in becoming more effective agents of social change (Walden University, 2021).

Healthcare is one of the rapidly changing and advancing sectors. As such the sector is driven towards the provision of quality services to its clients. The nursing profession is at the center of all the changes and implementations in healthcare institutions aimed at bettering the service quality to patients (Boehm et al, 2019: Kristensen et al, 2015). The responsibilities of nurses require them to continuously advance in terms of knowledge and skills developed (Price & Reichert, 2017). As a graduate nurse, a thorough thought process led me to enroll in an MSN program specializing in psychiatric nursing practice.

The choice to specialize in psychiatric nursing was challenging as there are several options, all aimed to better patient outcomes. My choice was motivated by an observation that I made over time as a nurse. There is a steady increase of mental health cases among both adults and children that took my attention. I am excited about helping patients with mental conditions and being a part of a team that works to eradicate or minimize mental health problems and their associated effects. Psychiatric nursing is a challenging field that requires dedication. I am ready to handle all the challenges involved. Besides, as an undergraduate, I spent most of my training sessions in the psychiatry unit because it felt more like what I wanted compared to other departments.

In the development of my professional career, I intend to join professional bodies and that will work to enable my application of psychological knowledge to better my practice. Specifically, I will join the American Psychiatric Association (APNA) because they play a role in the advancement of mental health nursing and practice (American Nurses Association, 2016). Joining this association will help me uphold and improve values such as integrity, transparency, and inclusivity among others that will help me to provide quality care for mental health patients. It may not be an easy journey to achieve my career goal, but I will put my effort into achieving the best.

, I agree with your post that the field of healthcare continuously changes. Provision of quality care remains a priority thus acts as a drive to the many changes. The nursing profession is the central platform of all the changes and implementations in healthcare institutions to improve the quality of services for the patients (Boehm et al., 2019: Kristensen et al., 2015). According to Price & Reichert (2017), the primary responsibility of nurses requires them to continue advancing their skills and knowledge in the field. Choosing to specialize in psychiatric nursing is challenging as it involves dealing with unstable-minded people and people who cannot express themselves without the help of others. Additionally, it is a specialization that needs a dedicated and willing person. With your undergraduate degree and experience in the psychiatry unit, blending into your profession will be easier. Joining professional bodies enables a nurse to employ their skills and knowledge to better their practice. For example, the American Psychiatric Association helps nurses uphold and improve values such as integrity and transparency (American Nurses Association, 2016).

PMHNP is an excellent choice, recognizing that every person has a chance to overcome, better their life, and get shots to change their course. It is also a challenge because mental health nursing is diverse, inventive, unlike all other areas of nursing, and it is about humanistic attachment. Assessments of people with a mental health condition are not rendered with devices, and our stethoscopes are dismissed, but we must communicate a lot with our patients, listening to the words people say; also, observing how they say them, and often hearkening for what a patient does not say. Furthermore, it necessitates an enormous quantity of self-reflection. Also, befitting a psychiatric nurse practitioner can be a perfect alternative for people who desire to combine a holistic, relationship-building strategy to care delivery, satisfying individuals at difficult points in their lives and guiding them toward well-being.

Consequently, for any nurse wanting to become a nurse practitioner, the most excellent prerequisite is experience. The foundation of experience helps to know the distinction and disparity between psychiatric diagnoses and understand the unique language used in assessing people with a mental health condition. A skilled psychiatric nurse practitioner is self-aware, observes their expressions or lack thereof, and understands transference and countertransference issues that can arise in every situation.

Notably, the most vital advice is to find a suitable mentor, someone who can explain the highs and lows of this field.

An individual’s key components that would be excellent for this profession are an expert, sympathetic, non-judgmental person who is unafraid to ask hard questions and has a good grasp of psychiatric disorders and medication that can be valuable. Acquire a mentor, study hard, and arrange for a wild ride complete of ups and downs.

It was a fascinating post, Solange. Good luck in your path to becoming and PMHNP.

NURS 6002 Examining Nursing Specialties

I have worked as a Mental health nurse since my graduation from nursing since, 11 years to be the decision to go back to school after working for 11 years. Working with Mental health patient’s population is quite challenging, but I like working with them. I have always had my plans to continue with my MSN in mental health if I decide to further my studies. “A master’s in nursing degree from Walden can empower you with the skills and credentials to turn your aspirations into impact” (Walden University. (n.d). During my years working as a mental health nurse I have been faced with lot of patients with substance abuse issues. Substance abuse rate is alarming in our communities. More nurses are needed to fight this problem that has left our communities population with disability precise. I chose the PMHNP track because of my experience in this area. The only difficulty I had was making.

As a nurse, joining a professional organization is very crucial, being a member of these organization helps to empower you and place you in a better place in the professional field which can make a difference in the quality you possess. I plan to join the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) or the International Society of Psychiatric Nurses (ISPN). These two professional organizations are both related to mental health which is my specialty. The (APNA) association promotes education and support for nurses and it advances the treatment and care of mental health disorder. To become a member, one has to be a fulltime nursing student and complete an application process which can be done by mail, online or phone with a rate of $25 required for full time members (American Psychiatry Nurses Association). “Understanding the challenges that is attached joining a professional organization, it is essential to understand the main reason or reasons why joining a professional organization so as to be able to locate a best fit for your specialty” (Cherry, Caramanica, Everett, Fennimore & Scott, 2019). The best way for nurses to determine if an organization is a good fit is to become familiar with its mission and consider if it aligns with their current role” (Echevarria, 2018). “Professional organizations provide nurses with a network of experts to share clinical and administrative challenges and gain new ideas and knowledge” (Cherry et al., 2019).

Response One: Romeo

Online learning program for MSN is designed to assist students in the nursing profession make a difference in the field of health care. When selecting a profession, it is crucial to first consider the passion towards the course. It is also important to reassess your strengths, where you would like to see yourself in the next 5 years, and the group you prefer working with (Alquwez, 2020). In the discussion post written by Romeo, the author has made it clear the type of work setting he prefers. At Walden University, there are about eight distinct specializations. A practitioner can either work as a specialty or nurse practitioner.

The desire to offer better care to family and patients is indeed a good mantra to start with. However, many people believe that nurse practitioners are limited to family practice only. That is not always the case with nursing profession (Vos, Boonstra, Kooistra, Seelen & Offenbeek, 2020). The university offers different nurse specializations. Each specialty offers the student an opportunity to take on extra responsibilities including examining patients, diagnosing illness, providing treatment, and prescribing medications. By choosing one of the specialty, Romeo has demonstrated the wish to focus on nursing education.

Regardless of the choice a person takes, specialization in the nursing profession is crucial as it helps to differentiate a practitioner in the field and aligns one’s interests with career goals. NLN is one organization that supports strategies for improving patient outcomes through effective collaboration and communication. The organization provides students with the opportunity to explore the most current health topics in collaboration with experts who serve as leaders in the healthcare system.
