My decision to pursue an MSN program was with great influence from my goals in nursing. I decided to pursue the Psych nurse practitioner program, which was to have main aims in helping the patients. I chose psych nurse practitioners mainly to help patients with disorders and problems such as psychiatric disorder, anxiety, and mood disorders. This is a form of treatment that helps and gives treatments to patients with disorders. The rise of mental illness also influenced me a lot to choose the psych program, for I will be of help to them at all times.

Due to my profession, I found that it was much easier for me to undertake the program. With my skills in dealing with and handling people with mental disorders, passion for my decision came automatically. It was also easier for the taking of Psych nurse practitioner since I have professional experiences in educating the families, communities, and those affected or have their people with mental illness.

Academically, taking Psych nurse practitioner will help me meet my great goals and achieve the meant desires for the program. Since the program aims to assess diagnosing and treating the mental illness, my education goals will exclusively pertain to a higher level and make me excel in academics (Fraino and Selix, 2021).

My academic and professional goals are to excel in my work and education; taking the program was quite a disciplined decision. It will lead to my success without any doubt. Also, as a nurse academically, it teaches us that we should be able to perform therapies; therefore, the psych nurse practitioner will enable me to meet the goals of providing psychotherapy. This helps my goals to reflect the MSN program of the psych nurse practitioner that I choose.

I intend to join the American Psychiatric Association (APNA) because they will help me to advancement in mental health nursing and practice (American Nurses Association, 2016). As a member, it help me to grow professionally while upholding some values such as integrity, transparency that will fuster quality of care for mentally challenged individuals. It might be a tough journey, however I intend to decrease working hours in order to be able to face the challenge ahead of me.

I have chosen to focus on the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP) program. A lot of thought has gone into this decision. At first, I wanted to focus on the family nurse practitioner (FNP) route. However, after speaking with my student success advisor, she informed me that it sounded like the AGPCNP route was a better fit for me. I also completed the questionnaire on the Walden University website that helps determine which MSN specialization is right for you. The quiz identified that the AGPCNP program or the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program was best for me. Because I primarily would like to work with the adult population, I can focus my studies through the AGPCNP focus on this population. The AGPCNP focus will prepare me to guide the health and well-being of patients 13 years and older (Walden University, 2022)

I have gone back and forth on deciding which focus is best for me. I always thought obtaining my FNP would open many more opportunities. However, I know I do not have the desire to work with the pediatric population. I also started my nursing career in labor and delivery and am familiar with this population. However, it looks like focusing my studies on the AGPCNP specialization will allow me to work in Women’s Health if I desire. The AGPCNP focus will help me promote a more equitable system serving individuals with compassion and dignity (Walden University, 2022). The AGPCNP focus will prepare me to manage disease prevention, health promotion, health maintenance, and restore care in adolescents and adults (Walden University, 2022). I will be prepared to deliver quality primary care services and make an impact on the patients and community I serve (Walden University, 2022).

There are many professional nursing organizations I could join that are affiliated with the AGPCNP focus, including the National Gerontological Nurses Association, Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association, Coalition for Nurses in Advanced Practice, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and American College of Nurse Practitioner, to name a few. According to Echevarria (2018), nurses should join professional organizations that best fit their goals. The Gerontologic Advanced Practice Nurses Association (GAPNA) represents the interests of advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) caring for older adults (Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association, 2022). The GAPNA opens opportunities for APRNs in education, leadership, research, advocacy, networking, and improvements in evidence-based practice (Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association, 2022). The GAPNA provides educational resources and up-to-date information about the care of older adults; it also offers opportunities for networking (Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association, 2022). There are many membership benefits, including a subscription to the official Journal of GAPNA, quarterly newsletters, and access to legislative news (Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association, 2022). My favorite detail of your explanation of choosing AGPCNP is knowing that working pediatrics was not an interest and that AGPCNPs

would not include much dedicated training for the pediatric population as such. Looking at the core competencies for different NP specializations, truly that is the largest different among the list provided between FNPs and AGPCNPs (The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, 2012). Additionally, I do believe the additional focus on the geriatric/elderly population (Adult-Gerontology NP Competencies Work Group, 2016) melds well with the general trend of people living longer, and addressing that quality of life remains preserved through aging. There will likely be much demand for geriatric/elderly related care in the near future.
