I think that the ethical guidelines for conducting translational research are similar to other research with a few extra considerations. The reason there needs to be extra consideration is because real people are being put through translational research. The things being studied have a goal of becoming the evidence-based standard used at bedside on real people. Some of these ethical principles are beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy, justice, and privacy. Additionally, before any research is performed informed consent needs to be completed. All participants in any setting need to be told all of the risks and benefits before making a decision to protect both the participant and the researcher.
As a member of the translational research team, some of the steps I would take to establish ethical guidelines for conduction research is making sure that the benefits outweigh the risk of the study. As well as making sure the participants are appropriate for the research. Making sure that the study is safe is I think the most important thing. If the benefits do not outweigh the risk, then the study does not need to be completed. If you do not have proper participants than the study will not be good. Research safety is a broad concept that applies to work performed inside the lab and outside the lab (University of Michigan, 2022). Luckily certain aspects of research safety are governed by federal and state regulations that prescribe the oversight functions however, achieving a safe research environment requires the conscientious effort from everyone who is involved in the study (University of Michigan, 2022).

As with any type of research, gaining appropriate informed consent is a top priority and issue. Since from the initial stages of a study, translational research is done directly on patients in the clinical setting instead of a laboratory, it is vitally important to insure that the individuals being studied have had the opportunity to be made aware of the conditions of the study, and the ability to accept or reject them without it negatively affecting the care that they receive. Gaining voluntary informed consent on patients that have a decreased level of consciousness, are in need of emergency assistance, are suffering from intense pain, or are critically ill presents unique challenges. (Gupta, 2022) Unfortunately, throughout history there are multiple instances where research studies were conducted on people with no regard to their human life or their dignity. It is imperative that regulatory laws and rules like the Nuremberg Code and the Common Rule be followed to avoid legal, ethical and moral violations while performing translational research studies.
