NUR 550 Discuss the role of translational research in advancing equitable access to health care
Topic 8 DQ 2
Health care challenges differ across populations, and interventions used to address the challenges differ profoundly. To ensure that population health is at the desired levels, equitable distribution of health care resources is vital. Unfortunately, health care services are inequitable, and many populations are usually disadvantaged and vulnerable. Advanced registered nurses have a critical role to play in advocating for equitable population health services and policies, albeit being a challenging process with various barriers.
Population health advocacy is a multifaceted practice where different efforts are combined to influence the desired change. Fuller and Henning (2021) advised public health advocates to influence system changes through media, legislative, and grassroots efforts. In the same frame, I highly rate grassroots efforts such as community interaction and awareness programs to ensure that different populations know their needs and understand when abused to resist appropriately. Such awareness programs can also be done through the media. I also look forward to active engagement in policy development to protect vulnerable populations, mainly those with special needs and easily stigmatized groups such as LGBTs (United Nations, 2020). All populations should receive equitable health care services regardless of their origins, socioeconomic status, gender orientation, and special needs, among other factors.
Population advocacy faces different barriers depending on the contexts and approaches used to influence practice and system changes. One of the challenges I anticipate is the disconnect between the advocate and target populations. Some populations may fail to understand the importance of the advocacy process and fail to cooperate. Inadequate support from influential leaders and resources are other anticipated barriers. In response, adequate preparation is necessary. Policies should be explained in detail, and stakeholders and advocacy supporters engaged early before the implementation begins. More importantly, resources can be sourced from external donors such as non-governmental organizations committed to addressing public health problems.

Title: NUR 550 Discuss the role of translational research in advancing equitable access to health care
Using Research to Support Health Policy, Advocacy and Policy Development
Advocacy is an important ethical obligation of the nursing practice. Nurses constitute the largest group of health professionals, which implies that they can significantly aid in the realization of positive policy change (DeNisco & Barker, 2015). As an advanced practice nurse, I have a role in using my expertise to achieve policy advocacy. I also have a role in advocating for equitable population health policies and services. I will achieve this by directly advocating for patients in particular instances where there is need. I have a role in persuading those in positions of authority regarding the need to provide equitable population health policies and services. For example, I might take initiative of providing an account of the healthcare costs and assess how this negatively affects access to care in a particular community. I can use my real life examples in nursing care to illustrate the needs of patients, as well as make recommendations on public policy.
Some of the areas in which I can have an influence r patient mortality and morbidity. I can use my position as an advanced practice nurse to report on issues to do with quality outcomes, access to care, and healthcare costs. Such reports are imperative for healthcare policymakers. I will also contribute to the expansion of the Healthcare infrastructure of vulnerable communities and improve access to care within thus the local school system. In endeavoring to achieve policy changes as an advanced practice nurse, I expect to face a number of barriers. First, since the physician may have more influence in my practice, I may find myself powerless in trying to influence policy. Second, I may not be able to carry out the advocacy role effectively because of patient demands. Finally, I may not have the organizational support that I require to have an impact on population advocacy policy.
