There is a chance that this does exist, but I wish there was a way to download any smart device that has recognized a dysrhythmia into a patient’s chart. The patient can sometimes show me a snapshot of the event (if they know how), but I have no idea how to make that a permanent part of their medical chart. It would be so nice, since we can’t always guarantee that they will have another event during the ED visist.

Healthcare has come a long way since electronic technology has been introduced. One benefit I really enjoy about it is being able to see everyone’s documentation. When a patient comes into the emergency department and they are altered, it makes it hard to determine a baseline. I have the option to look at previous emergency department notes, other consults, previous history, and progress notes from various hospitals that have seen the patient. It enables me to understand the patient and get a more rounded perception of who they are. One thing I would improve would be the way it is organized. I understand how to breeze through the different files, but it did take me some time.

With the fast-paced nature of the emergency department, everyone is on turbo speed. With that being said, the nurses of the ED are known not to scan meds or labs. I am guilty of this to some nature. The emergency department needs to make it easier to scan. One option of this would allow nurses to have personal scanners. Sometimes the computer doesn’t work, or the scanner does reach far enough, etc, making it difficult and annoying. Another option would be to somehow have another verification to ensure you are getting the correct medication or lab sent. Another option to at least makes labs easier would be to have a cart filled with different tubes, needles, and j-loops in each room, cutting down the time it would take to gather supplies.

Topic 7 DQ 1 

Emerging technologies like mobile and telehealth as well as artificial intelligence impact patient care and the storage of health information in significant ways. Firstly, technology enhances access to care for patients as they can interact with their providers seamless using telehealth and mobile services. Secondly, these technologies are improving quality as patients can monitor their vital signs and communicate with their providers, especially those with chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension who must monitor their status using these smart and wearable devices like smart watches. Thirdly, technology improve interactions between patients and providers allowing them to gain better diagnoses and treatment interventions (McBride et al., 2018). Fourthly, secure storage of patient health information is critical and these technologies allow providers and organizations to keep these data protected from unauthorized access. Through secure and protected storage, the providers and organizations can seamlessly share the information that aids in making care decisions and plans.  

One ethical and legal issue associated with electronic health records (EHRs) is about the storage and access to protected health information (PHI) based on the privacy rule by HIPAA (Moore & Frye, 2019). This implies that registered nurses should ensure that they keep this information confidential, secured based on the need for privacy. Protected health information (PHI) is a critical aspect of privacy and confidentiality that all providers and organizations should adhere to and ensure that no disclosure of their patient details occurs while undertaking treatment in their facility. The most critical measure that I can implement in my practice to protect patient privacy and confidentiality is never to disclose and share their PHI with unauthorized individuals. Disclosure of PHI violates existing legal and ethical obligations of nurses in their care settings (Theodos & Sittig, 2021). Ensuring that all people adhere to this requirement is essential to protecting patient’s health information.
