Regulatory bodies play an important role in maintaining standards of practice in nursing in the US. One of the regulatory bodies that specify certification of nurses for advanced practice in my specialty is the state boards of nursing. Each of the states in America has a state board of nursing that plays the role of certifying advanced practice nurses. Advanced practice nurses must meet the requirements set by the state to be certified to provide care in their role. Some of the regulations include a master’s degree in advanced nursing role, a minimum of bachelor’s degree in nursing and successful passing of the licensure examinations. The second regulatory organization that regulates the licensure requirements for my advanced practice role is the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The ANCC certifies advanced practice nurses in their specialized roles. The last organization that specifies the standards of nursing in my area of specialization is the American Nurses Association (ANA) (ANA, n.d.; ANCC, n.d.). American Nurses Association develops the scope and standards of nursing for advanced practice nurses.

The regulatory bodies influence educational requirements and experiences for my specialty in a number of ways. Firstly, they set the minimum competencies that the advanced practice nurses must demonstrate in their practice. The achievement of the set competencies is important because it promotes safety and quality in nursing practice. The regulatory organizations also standardize the practice of advanced practice nurses in the state. They ensure that advanced practice nurses utilize uniform standards of practice in care for quality, safety and efficiency. Through the roles of the professional organizations, the goals of APRN Consensus Model are achieved, including uniformity in licensure, accreditation, education and certification are achieved (NCSBN, n.d.).
