Title: NUR 513 Topic 1 DQ 1 Describe how the role of advanced registered nurse transformed over time

The role of advanced practice registered nurses has evolved over time in response to the changing healthcare needs, substantial training programs, and advancement in technology. Inadequacies in the health sector have caused nursing roles to expand necessitating the need for re-evaluating educational requirements and scope of nursing practice. In the 20th century, nurses were perceived with a lot of admiration for tending to injured soldiers during World War 1 and  World War II (Fell, 2021). Nurses worked primarily in hospitals and near war fields but later in the same century, new opportunities started to open up expanding the scope of nursing.

In the 21st century, nursing evolved from bare care-giving, to a whole profession requiring medical knowledge of at least a bachelor’s degree in nursing and some form of clinical experience. Advanced practice registered nurses provide healthcare to diverse populations in different care settings such as hospitals, schools, and clinics (Diez-Sampedro et al., 2021).  They use their knowledge and skills to tailor-make healthcare plans for individuals based on prevention.

The continued education and continuous adoption of current technology in the American healthcare system have expanded the scope of advanced practice registered nurses (Diez-Sampedro et al., 2021). It has opened more specialties in the field of informatics where nurses are required to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to handle electronic devices used in healthcare. This is a whole nursing specialty that nurses can pursue and become experts in. The expansion of this field also necessitated nursing educators responsible for educating nurses about the new technological skills, policies, and procedures further widening the scope of APRN.  Artificial intelligence, telemedicine, the internet of things, and other emerging technologies, are expected to increase the roles and responsibilities of APRN hence widening the scope.

If I were to rate myself as a nurse in general, I would give myself a proficient rating. I have specialized in emergency medicine and pediatrics throughout my nursing career, so I have been lucky enough to become comfortable with a wide variety of medical issues and patient populations. I have been a nursing supervisor at a pediatric clinic for about a year now, and this has expanded my nursing knowledge tremendously as well. My past work experience has helped me to gain more of a holistic understanding and to be able to more accurately predict what the assessment and treatment may be for many different medical conditions. I believe that my background in nursing knowledge has given me a great stepping stone to enter graduate school.

However, if I were to rate myself regarding this class, and graduate school in general, I would give myself the rating of advanced beginner. Up until reading from our assigned textbooks for this class, I did not fully understand the roles and vast background of advanced registered nurses. For instance, when I thought of advanced registered nurses, I only thought of certified nurse practitioners and certified registered nurse anesthetists. Finding out how much I did not know about the field of advanced registered nurses makes me very excited to gain a further understanding throughout this class.

I have had the opportunity to work a long side many great advanced registered nurses, and I have learned many of their roles. A handful of my close friends have gone through similar schooling, so I have been able to gain minimal knowledge from their experiences as well. With that being said, I still have so much knowledge to learn, and I am very eager to dig deeper into the specific roles.

Unfortunately, I was not able to open the second link on this discussion, so I may be missing some information with my reply to this discussion post.

A holistic understanding of our role as future healthcare leaders and nurse practitioners will go a long way to have a better understanding of the healthcare needs of our patients. For example, we are now dealing with patients not only suffering from hypertension, diabetes, obesity, mental health issues, CAD, and heart failure but also gender dysphoria. We have to traverse that sensitive topic of gender identity crisis because patients can be suffering from anxiety, depression, and suicidal tendencies on top of the disease diagnosis and treatment. Nurse practitioners will fill the gap of primary care providers that can also care for sensitive issues like transgender healthcare provisions.

Title: NUR 513 Topic 1 DQ 1 Describe how the role of advanced registered nurse transformed over time

MS Nursing field continues to evolve over time, and the AANC defines APRNs as nurses providing direct care to patients. Demand for healthcare providers is overloaded and the system is stretched to the limit. This demand has created new nursing roles for APRNs to work in collaboration with physician oversight. The advanced nursing practice creates opportunities and res[possibilities to provide care to patients in a broader way.

In my 7 years of Nursing experience, I have worked in Medical-surgical nursing, Telemetry, and now the Intensive Care Unit. According to Patricia E. Benner’s Novice to Expert theory, I would rate myself as proficient. I remember when I started as a new graduate nurse, I learned how to draw insulin in the syringe, inserted a foley and nasogastric tube, and understood the basic tasks as a Registered Nurse. As foreign graduate, we did not have many resources to have hands-on experience and our understanding of how to do things as a nurse is very limited. I was very task-oriented and was not looking at the bigger picture. I had a mentor and an educator who helped me grow and learn simple tasks. When I started telemetry, I was very comfortable in basic nursing tasks and started looking at the bigger picture, learning why and how the patient acquired the disease. I realized that’s when everything I learned in school and hands-on experience come along. Then I started working in the Cardiac Intensive Care unit, and that’s when everything came together. I started sharpening my critical thinking skills and learning more in-depth specializing in cardiac diseases. As a travel nurse, I get to experience all types of Intensive Care Units from Medical-Surgical ICU to Trauma ICU. I have so many things to learn and will continue to learn as much as I can. I was able to take my telemetry and Critical Care certifications as well as my cardiac certifications to test myself and grasp a better understanding of how to take care of my patients.,

I’m impressed with your response and the experience you’ve gained through your RN career. it’s important to learn that nursing is a growing profession. my clinical experience will be handy in the MS program. the most significant challenge will be re-learning how to write research papers and use the APA format since it’s been a long time doing it. the nursing profession is ever-growing and advancing in relation to needs and demands and this category includes Nurse Midwife, Nurse Practitioners, CRNA, and Clinical Nurse Specialists(DeNisco et al., 2019). other fields like Nurse Administrators, Policymakers, and Public health nurses were established to integrate leadership, research, education, and clinical management to improve healthcare outcomes.

With the evolvement of the nursing profession’s versatility and adaptive capacity, new career pathways for nurses have developed , attracting a larger and more broadly talented applicant and leading roles to expanded scopes of practice and responsibilities for nurses. Nurses have been an enabling force for change in health care along many dimensions (Aiken et al., 2009) .The changing landscape of the health care system and the changing profile of the population require that the system undergo a fundamental shift to provide patient-centered care; deliver more primary as opposed to specialty care; deliver more care in the community rather than the

acute care setting; provide seamless care; enable all health professionals to practice to the full extent of their education, training, and competencies; and foster inter-professional collaboration. Achieving such a change will enable the health care system to provide higher-quality care, reduce errors, and increase safety. Providing care in this way and in these areas taps traditional strengths of the nursing profession.

Title: NUR 513 Topic 1 DQ 1 Describe how the role of advanced registered nurse transformed over time

Historically, when one spoke of advanced practice nursing, they meant one of four roles; certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), certified nurse mid-wife (CNM), clinical nurse specialist (CNS), or certified nurse practitioner (CNP). In 2004, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) defined advanced practice nursing as “Any form of nursing intervention that influences health care outcomes for individuals or populations, including direct care of individual patients, management of care for individuals and populations, administration of nursing and health care organizations, and the development and implementation of health policy” (Denisco & Barker, 2016). Since this definition came out many other nursing roles, such as nurse administrators and public health nurses have also been thought of as advanced practice nursing roles. Whereas advanced practice nursing used to be mainly reserved for clinical practice, it is now branching out into non-clinical roles. With the ever-expanding role of nurses coupled with the push to expand access to and decrease costs of health care there will likely be many new roles developed for nursing practice. These roles will require advanced degrees even if they are not in clinical areas, therefore, they too should be thought of as advanced practice nursing.
