Title: NUR 513 Identify a population that you will likely serve as an advanced registered nurse that you think is particularly vulnerable to issues of health disparity/inequity

The population that I think I would be serving as an APRN would be vulnerable to issues of health disparity/inequity. The population that I think I would be serving is the chronic ill and disabled. People with disease that are chronic are at a bigger risk of having negative outcomes, and they are at higher risk of using healthcare dollars, than the healthier population. The chronically ill or disabled population is two times more likely to have sick days than the general population (Joszt, 2020). The chronically ill and the disabled need the healthcare system, but with their disabilities, they may have little knowledge of accessing healthcare. These vulnerable populations may have many challenges in getting healthcare. The population with disabilities and chronic illness are at higher risk for developing illnesses such as dementia, depression, asthma, diabetes, stroke, obesity, and poor oral health, which would cause them to require more healthcare resources (World Health Organization, 2023). Some of the disparities arise from a lack of resources like transportation, poverty, prohibition of education, and employment.

As a nurse practitioner, you could work in the health department in rural areas. As nurse practitioners,  they could advocate to stakeholders at the local, state, and national levels to bring awareness to this population to bring opportunities that provide this population with resources that could increase positive healthcare outcomes. Nurse Practitioners could get them set up with public transportation or services that provide transportation to doctor appointments. As an APRN they could get community support to bring health fairs that has cholesterol checks, diabetes checks, and give out education on stroke and other health care issues.

This healthcare promotion aligns with Christianity that we can do good and provide them with love, caring, and resources for the less fortunate. We could involve the members of the church to bring the community together to help provide spiritual support, food, as well as their time to help this vulnerable population.

Beginning a new journey to obtain your MSN is exciting! Yet, it can be stressful and at times overwhelming. This week I invite you to reflect on Bible verses and their application to your journey towards your MSN degree. I hope that this allows you to reflect a little and find peace and joy as you continue through this first class. The following activity is not required, but substantial responses will count towards participation.

Review the following two Bible verses. Please apply at least one of these to your personal process of beginning your education journey and/or your role as an advanced professional nurse. If these two verses do not relate to you please feel free to share one that does and describe how it has impacted you.

Isaiah 28: 9-10 “Whom shall he teach knowledge? ……For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept; line upon line, line upon line; here a little and there a little”

Matthew 7: 7 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you”

I look forward to reading your responses.

You have a great response and input role as an APRN. As an Advanced Practice Nurse, I will strive to impact health promotion and

disease prevention in racial and ethnic minorities, especially from rural areas in the community. I will work towards addressing cultural differences between patients and healthcare providers that can result in holistic care to diagnose and treat patients while improving the patient’s compliance.

Holistic care includes treating patients’ physical, mental, and cultural or ethnic parts of their health (cultural sensitivity) through awareness of patients’ differences that exist without assigning value to them (Tucker et al., 2019).

Matthew 7: 7 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you”

I love this Bible verse as it gives me strength and courage in my day-to-day life. This Bible verse always reminds me to continue trying to reach my goal. As it says prayer is a continuous process, it is not like you stop praying once you get your answer. This Bible verse related to my life because when I had obstacles immigrating to this country I never gave up, I seek and tried to pass those obstacles. I failed many times, and I already knew this Bible verse. So, it gave me strength and courage and I believed that God would help me to reach my goal. God always sees our challenging work and struggles but it is not necessary to get the answer right away if you wait and try increasingly, you will find the way. Thank You.

My choice to return to school and pursue my Master’s degree was prompted by my desire to do more for the health and healing of people of all ages. While I know that I have an impact on patients’ lives in my current role as a bedside nurse, I feel a responsibility to do more and contribute to improving our health care system as a whole. I take motivation from Phillipians 2:4, “Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others”. This verse motivates me in the same way as a quote by Roman philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero, “Not unto ourselves alone are we born”. With this motivation in mind, I believe that I will persist in my endeavor to complete this program and balance it with my work schedule in order to meet my responsibility to others.

Philippians 4: 13 I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

This is one of my favorite verse from the Bible and I find my self reciting it daily in my head and out loud at times for it gave me confidence and assurance that everything will be ok no matter what the situation is. Coming to America with no family or close relatives to rely on was full of heartache and disappointment . Had to fend for myself as best as I possible could. Eventually with many nights of prayers I got settled and went back to school to peruse a new career path in nursing. Working full time, going to school and balancing a family with three small children was no easy task with much trials and tribulations i graduated from nursing school. Soon after graduation i began working in the emergency room as a brand new nurse it was very challenging however i was able to over come all obstacles just by believing I can do all things through him who strengthens me.

Hi Melanie, the bible verse that you mentioned, Matthew 7: 7 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you” relates to my goal. Growing up as a catholic I have been taught bible verses and it did give me strength when I am weak. I have strong faith in the lord and I believe all obstacles I can overcome. Though this is the start of my journey of becoming a nurse practitioner, I can achieve and finish what I have started with God as the center of my education. In addition to the verse that you’ve posted, the bible verse Proverbs 3:5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” also helps me to keep going.

When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire, you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you.

God’s word teaches me about having faith in life and strengthens me to be a better person as a nurse, especially working at the bedside during pandemics. This verse is always on top of my mind; we shall not be afraid of the unknown, and it doesn’t stop me from practicing direct patient care. We now know that covid-19 is here to stay for the foreseeable future; we may learn how to live together and co-exist in the same universe. Thereby giving me the strength and courage to move beyond, I decided to return to school and pursue my Master’s degree to move a step forward in my life, a new chapter. I know I’m not alone when I face challenges during my life journey.

My decision to pursue the current MSN program and my nursing journey was necessitated by my desire to fulfill the goal of achieving specialized knowledge and advanced nursing skills. In agreement to your claim, the journey can be exciting and challenging at times. To encourage me through this journey, I have identified a verse that clearly speaks about my experience this far: Psalm 34:4–5 “I sought the LORD, and He answered me and delivered me from all my fears. Those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.” This is a motivational verse that does not only address on the challenges ahead, but also speaks of the confidence and the hard work through which my academic and professional goals can be achieved.

I love how you express the desire to pursue advanced education. Nurses, for me, are lifelong learners. Education is not just for financial gain but for the advancement of our knowledge and enrichment of our life experiences. Like you, my life is always influenced by my desire to become better, whether it is via my profession or my personal life. I was once a very fearful student. I have no confidence and constantly second-guessing myself. I overcome that by my faith in God and by always holding on to God’s words and promises. Thank you.

Starting any new journey is exciting, yet change can be stressful and overwhelming. I have delayed starting my journey to my MSN for so many reasons, but I am so glad I have finally started. I have forgotten over the years how valuable it is to have goals and be working towards something.

I feel I can relate to Mathew 7:7 to starting my MSN. If one does not ask or seek or knock, then a person can be stuck and not move along in a career or life. I have had many great opportunities in my nursing career so far that have taught me so much, but there is always more to learn and ways to continue to grow. Especially in healthcare, new technologies and research improve patient care and outcomes. Beginning my MSN has really motivated me to work harder and become better. I want to take what I learn on this journey and apply it to make a difference.

I must remember to continue to ask questions and seek new opportunities. This will help me in so many ways as a person, mother, friend and nurse. I am grateful for the support of my family in pursuing my MSN, and cannot wait to see the opportunities that are opened for me.

Thank you for your post. Pursuing further education is not just stressful and overwhelming for me, but sometimes it undermines my self-confidence. Especially if you have lots of responsibilities and everyone is relying on you. But I draw my strength from God. He will not allow things to happen unless he has a purpose for us. You just reminded me how vital reaching for your goals in life is and how challenges should not deter anyone from moving forward and reaching further heights. Thank you.

Matthew 7: 7 “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened to you”

This Bible verse is valuable to me throughout my schooling process. This is important because regardless of how much prior experience and knowledge that you may have, there is still much more to learn. I consider myself to be a life-long learner, so this is very relevant to my life. This verse reminds you that you can advance your knowledge by asking questions and digging deeper into concepts that you may not fully understand. This will also help me tremendously when I am a nurse educator, because new roles can always be intimidating, so asking questions and seeking further knowledge will be crucial. I have an app on my phone that send me a daily Bible verse at 8:00 every morning. I find this to be very helpful because it seems like all of these verses have some sort of relevance to my life.

Thank you for sharing the Bible verses with the classroom. I’m a strong believer of the words of God . Through my journey I have so many experiences with him to the point even I my darkness time ,I’ll remain faithful to him . When the Bible said whoever ask shall receive meaning whatever we’re asking God with by his almighty grace we will receive only if we believe in him . I’m gonna share my testimony with the class in a few words. In September 2019 during a thanksgiving service that I offered for my birthday at my church, the First Lady which is a woman who dedicated her time to pray for other’s call me up to tell me in front of the assembly that God will amaze for year’s to come .At first she reads the anecdotes of Jacob’s fountains in genesis 26:14-33 , and said to me in a short period of time you will obtained degrees after degrees . In March,2020 during the pandemic my administrator decided to pay in full my tuition where I collected my BSN in October,2021. Then in July I spoke with my counselor who guided me through when I was undecided to register for my MSN . Finally with faith and prayers here I’m navigating myself in the program . I thank God everyday for being so faithful to me . Everyday as soon I’m awake I play that song from Cece  Winans ”The goodness of God”. God is faithful and able to make the impossible to possible.

Title: NUR 513 Identify a population that you will likely serve as an advanced registered nurse that you think is particularly vulnerable to issues of health disparity/inequity

Health disparities are variations in health outcomes that are strongly associated with environmental, social, and economic deprivation and are frequently influenced by the social settings in which people live, learn, work, and play.

In my opinion, as an advanced registered nurse, the senior population is more susceptible to problems related to health disparity and inequality. Chronic conditions such as Pressure injury, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiac disease are common in this population and can hurt overall health and quality of life. Health disparities may be made worse for the elderly population by additional obstacles such as social isolation, financial hardships, and difficulty accessing healthcare.

My job as a critical care nurse is to prevent hospital-acquired diseases and to promote health with minimal use of supportive aids, like ventilators, dialysis machines etc, among the senior population. This involves performing thorough evaluations, generating appropriate care plans, and educating patients and their families on how to stay healthy and manage infections. I could contribute to enhancing the health conditions and reducing health disparities for this susceptible population by focusing on illness prevention and health promotion.

In conclusion, I can lessen health inequalities and enhance the general health and welfare of this group. This is in line with the Christian worldview, which emphasizes the need to use education and care for the sick and vulnerable to advance societal welfare.
