One nursing theory that I had not heard much about before these past week’s reading is Katie Eriksson’s theory of carative caring. This theories ultimate goal is caring to lighten suffering and serve life and health (Micah et al., 2023). In my current role as a bedside nurse on a med-surg unit, I continuously use this theory everyday. I as well as every nurse I know got into nursing to care for others. That being said, every nursing job requires care and compassion, it just might be illustrated in different ways. As a bedside nurse the care may be more hands on with the patients. It can be something as simple as giving a patient a shower and braiding their hair when they have not showered in days. It can be taking a moment to be present with the family members of a patient and explaining what exactly is going on with their loved one. As a nurse leader caring comes out in other ways. Caring in a nurse leader role may be seen in how you treat your employees, your coworkers and how you treat your community. Caring in the nurse leader role may not be as hands on as a bedside nurses caring is but it may be a general feeling felt by a unit or hospital. Care can be felt by a nurse leader when they show up everyday for their unit and continue to be hands-on even if they may not have the skills of being a bedside nurse anymore. Care can be felt by being trustworthy and fair when dealing with difficult situations.

As I have chosen my future role in a Nurse in leadership, the responsibilities are expanding from a single patient area to the whole unit.  To manage the various situations as a leader, Contingency theory is valuable for my career. Contingency theory relies on opting for the good decision and most correct one “based on the situation” (Audenaert, n.d.). This theory aims to provide a fresher perspective to people, encourage choices that are most reliable and wise, and introduce the reasoning behind having leadership skills for the higher authorities. Moreover, having such a  theory enables people to be responsible and be role models, they would have enough exposure to pick choices that can benefit the whole ward. This theory stands out as it preferably consists of ideas that drive the management and reinforce choices.

Recently, My unit hired a new nurse manager. He was attempting to make decisions based on his own experience and practices in our department immediately, without knowing the expectations and rules of the existing team leaders. This created an ambiance of doubt and mistakes. Such a situation lessens job satisfaction, decreases patient safety, lacks of resources etc. Compared to my previous workplace when I had a new manager, she communicated well with the employees. She asked their likes and dislikes in an anonymous survey and tried to implement it slowly in the unit. The unit staff and manager welcomed this act. The above-described scenario can be a  example for contingency theory.

Depending on determinants of health, a lot must be done by individuals for good health outcomes to happen. There are various theories that could be applied to public health however, Imogene King’s theory of goal attainment appeals to me most. During nurse-patient interaction, communication is key leading to knowledge transfer to patients, setting informed achievable goals and fostering a commitment to achieve them (Gonzalo, 2023). King’s theory is not only applicable to individuals but also to families with a common interest. It is easier to help a family who accepts managing obesity by transitioning to a healthy lifestyle as opposed to having a community with high prevalence of vaping individuals stop the use of electronic cigarettes. One of the limitations of the King’s theory is the inability to include people with diverse needs at the same time.  When public health nurses are working with individuals with common interests such as alcoholic anonymous, King’s theory is applicable. If the individuals have a common interest, that will help in applying King’s theory, however, it is not applicable to communities who have varied interests as this will impede following through and achieving the set goals. My current practice involves helping patients in setting routine goals such as on their mobility, physical activity or eating while hospitalized, which sets the stage for public health nurses to work with them by modifying these goals to achieve optimal health outside the hospitals. A study on cancer patients who were given goal-oriented care discovered that it was associated with optimal outcomes (Wiatrek et al., 2019). This could be replicated in different populations to promote health.
