Title: NUR 513 Discussion: Role Development for Advanced Registered Nurses
Nurses must be up-to-date and be keen on any legislation that is being formulated concerning healthcare. This is because such legislations usually have significant impacts on the nursing practice and patient care. In Texas, one healthcare legislation that is being considered is the Healthcare Expanded and Accessed Locally for Texans Act (HEAL Texans Act) (Gore, 2023). A major provision of this legislation is that proposes the removal of restrictions that limit advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) to fully exercise their independence in diagnosis and patient care (Gore, 2023). Supporters of the Act say that requirements such as occupational licensing and on-site physician supervision should be removed to allow APRNs to diagnose and prescribe treatments independently (Gore, 2023). This legislation will have a positive impact on my future practice since it will allow me to manage my patients to the best of my knowledge and skills without being supervised by a physician. It is important to be aware of conflicts that may arise between APRNs and physicians because traditionally, it has been held that the education, skills, and roles of the two professions differ. However, this legislation will allow APRNs to collaborate with physicians as equals and not to work “under” physicians.
Such legislations encourage nurses to be actively involved in healthcare politics to advocate for their profession. I will join nurses’ organizations such as the Texas Nurse Practitioners and be an active member involved in advocacy for nurses’ welfare and the improvement of nursing as an independent profession. I will also, whenever I have an opportunity submit suggestions and petitions to the state and local legislatures concerning existing or proposed legislation affecting the nursing practice.

A Sample Answer 2 For the Assignment: NUR 513 Discussion: Role Development for Advanced Registered Nurses
Title: NUR 513 Discussion: Role Development for Advanced Registered Nurses
The Nurse Patient Safety Act (SF1384) bill was passed last year in Minnesota which includes comprehensive workplace violence prevention measures, student loan debt forgiveness for registered nurses and nursing teaching faculty, a study on why nurses are leaving the bedside, and scholarship coverage for childcare for individuals completing registered nurse degree programs (Minnesota Nurses Association, 2023).
The Minnesota Nurses Association elaborated further on what the bill entails and how it impacts the nurses as follows:
- Nurses and other direct healthcare workers are now required to be part of the creation of workplace violence prevention plans and will be able to provide their concerns and feedback on how the plans are working. If needed, there will be better transparency, enabling better accountability and intervention from the Minnesota Legislature.
- RN Student Loan Forgiveness: Registered nurses employed by a non-profit hospital in Minnesota and providing direct patient care are eligible to have their monthly student loan payments covered by the State of Minnesota as long as they agree to continue in that role for at least two years.
- Nurse Faculty Loan Forgiveness: Nurses agreeing to a two-year commitment as nurse faculty in a teaching program will be eligible to receive 15% of the average annual educational debt for RNs each year.
- The study on why nurses are leaving the bedside will provide information and data to demonstrate that nurses are leaving the profession due to unsafe and unsustainable working conditions that hospital administrators are not correcting, including unsafe staffing and workplace violence. This will enable MNA to push for more vital safe staffing legislation in the future and determine if other important factors contribute to why nurses are leaving the bedside. This will provide data to the legislature to demonstrate the need for them to act and support hospital bedside nurses instead of enabling corporate power to continue to exert its hold and kill safe staffing measures at the Capitol.
- Individuals in Minnesota who are nursing assistants and are accepted into a registered nurse degree program can currently apply for the Minnesota Department of Human Services Nursing Facility Employee Scholarship Program, which will also provide coverage for childcare costs.
According to the Minnesota Nurses Association (2023), the legislation to be considered in 2024 is as follows:
Safe Staffing
- Ensuring no nurse faces retaliation for responding to an unsafe assignment
- Increasing funding for RN student loan forgiveness
- New workplace violence prevention measures, including mandated crisis response teams for every hospital.
The Nurse Patient Act legislation passed last year and the Safe Staffing legislation that will hopefully be considered this year will impact my future practice because I will continue to care for patients alongside other healthcare providers in my future role as an educator.
It is essential to be involved in political advocacy to advocate for patients, health care providers, health, and legislation. Although it is vital for me to be involved in my future practice, I am currently unable to envision to what extent I will be involved in political advocacy. I will see what my future holds and, at that time, will decide what the next steps are.

Description:
Advanced registered nursing graduates are entering the profession at dynamic time when roles and scope of practice are shifting based on developments in legislation and policy in response to the evolving needs of the health care system.
Professional nursing organizations play an important role in making sure the perspectives of advanced registered nurses are heard, and in supporting nurse specialties in their efforts to expand their scope of practice and their full participation throughout the health care system.
For this assignment, you will conduct research on the current scope of practice for your specialty and efforts that are being made to expand that scope and the role of the advanced nurse in positively influencing the health care system. Write a 1,250-1,500-word paper that includes the following:
- A discussion of the scope of your future role as an advanced registered nurse, including any regulatory, certification, or accreditation agencies that define that scope.
- A discussion of three professional nursing organizations that you think are most influential in advancing the scope and influence of advanced nursing. Of these organizations, evaluate the one that you would most like to join. How do its goals and mission fit in with your worldview and philosophy of care? How might membership in this organization improve your practice?
- A discussion of a controversial or evolving issue that is most likely to affect your scope of practice or role in the next few years. How do you think this issue could influence the profession and other stakeholders, and why does it matters to the advanced registered nurse?
You are required to cite five to 10 sources to complete this assignment. Sources must be published within the last 5 years and appropriate for the assignment criteria and nursing content.
