Conducting research is essential in building safe quality patient care. How the information is gathered must also be held to high standards. In research, as an advanced registered nurse, there are major ethical issues that must be addressed. The information being collected must be unbiased. The patients must be made aware of the treatments being studied while being administered. “In patient care, ethical conflicts are related to patients’ fundamental rights for information, involvement, and equality” (Usberg et al., 2021, p. 239). The patients must also understand how their personal information is being used. After understanding this, they must sign documents stating the release of their information. The licensed professionals must also ensure that the patient’s questions have all been answered before releasing their personal information. During this process, the advanced registered nurse also understands that they are first and foremost, the patient’s advocate. According to Abbasinia et al. (2020) obtaining health-related information and decision-making are extremely important and they need someone to advocate for them. This is one of the most important parts of being a nurse. One ethical issue that an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) can come across is conflicting professional obligations. One obligation could be fidelity to the patient vs. advancing research for the greater good (Larkin et al., 2017). On one hand the APRN wants to do right by their patient because their patient is not just a number in some study. On the other hand the APRN would like for their research to help thousands of people and therefore may have to push aside some of their feelings of infidelity toward the patient. At the end of the day, however, patient safety should be the APRN’s main goal and if the research puts the patient at risk in any way it should be the APRN who steps up and voices their concern for patient safety and possibly even comes up with another alternative to keep the patient safe.

This can be different compared to a registered nurses (RN)’s role, because the APRN has more autonomy in research situations. The RN’s role in research is more about blindly following orders and not having much autonomy. Where an APRN may be the lead researcher or could have found something revolutionary that they are able to subject patients to in order to benefit the greater good. APRN’s do not have to have the internal battle that RN’s do about if something is out of their scope of practice nearly as much. APRN’s have a unique spot in research because they not only communicate with the patient’s but they are also heading research.
