My role specialization is Family Nurse Practitioner and a problem that fascinates me in nursing is the concept of burnout. Nurses thrive in a complex and fluctuating environment, while multitasking and managing competing demands even when understaffed or low on resources. Having been a staff nurse in the acute care setting for 3 years and being relatively new in my nursing career, I have seen how detrimental burnout can be physically, mentally, and emotionally to some of the brightest nurses I know. Nurse burnout has been associated with increased turnover rates and is a factor that makes clinicians more likely to leave their jobs or healthcare entirely. I was interested to look deeper into this topic especially as it relates to the current state of healthcare workers in these challenging times. I used keyword search strategies in the online library provided for us to limit my search to burnout in the nursing profession. It was my goal to find credible research that explained the causes of nurse burnout as well as the long-term mental and emotional effects.

According to Rosa (2020), burnout is more than stress or fatigue—it’s a feeling of overwhelming exhaustion, cynicism, and low self-efficacy resulting from chronic work strains. A poor work environment characterized by job demands outweighing job resources is the primary cause of burnout; for nurses, this translates into decreased autonomy, strained working relationships with colleagues, lack of support from management, and insufficient resources and staff (Rosa, 2020). The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the realities of poor work environments, which may lead nurse burnout rates to grow exponentially as hospitals ask nurses to work under potentially extreme conditions. According to a study, burnout has been linked to job dissatisfaction, depression, and even suicidal ideation (Rosa, 2020).

A cross-sectional study was performed to explore predictors and measures of burnout amongst nursing staff at Stikland Psychiatric Hospital in South Africa. The findings indicated that high levels of burnout were associated with the availability of resources, workload, and conflicts in the workplace. This study identified the correlation of burnout with nurses’ experience, understaffing, heavier workload, less favorable physical working conditions and less availability and poorer quality of equipment and materials. Their study revealed that burnout scores showed high levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization in South African nurses. However, the study also concluded that despite high levels of burnout, participants still reported high job satisfaction scores (Payne, Koen, Niehaus, & Smit, 2020).

Lastly, I reviewed a source that expounded specifically on the risk of mental health disorders in nurses related to burnout. According to Ross (2020), burnout is a stress response, much like post-traumatic stress syndrome and is a concern for nurses. In July 2019, The Joint Commission released a Quick Safety Advisory of Combating Nurse Burnout in response to recent studies on increasing burnout among nurses. Their advisory highlighted that 15.6% of nurses reported burnout and that emergency room nurses were at a higher risk. Furthermore, nurses had reported in surveys that only 5% of health care organizations were assisting staff with burnout (Ross, 2020). Additionally, nurses scored statistically and significantly higher compared with the general population for mental health disorders, treatment for mental health problems, and suicide risk and attempts (Ross, 2020).

I believe a potential innovation to the problem would be resilience and relief programs offered by the health care organizations. The Joint Commission noted that organizations need to be working to remove barriers to nurses’ work-flow, staffing, and workplace environment concerns as well as offer mental health programs and outreach for their employees (Ross, 2020). The National Academy of Medicine (NAM) has released strategies to support clinicians’ health and well-being. Although these are important recommendations, encouraging nurses to take breaks or report their concerns, may be unrealistic without giving them the support, safety, and resources to do so. I understand in these challenging times the importance for nurses to take care of themselves and safeguard their health.

Role Specialization

My role specialization is family nurse practitioner. This has been my dream all through because I have wanted to help people who are suffering from different diseases in getting health and health care services. It is imperative to note that a family nurse practitioner works with families to implement different plans in health care and also provide care which is preventable. Depending on the settings, a family nurse practitioner can work with physicians and nurse practitioners. However, there are others who practice independently (Moore et al., 2020). They are skilled and knowledgeable in their areas of specialization. A family nurse practitioner can prescribe medications for different people who are suffering from illnesses or diseases. He or she is also skilled and educated enough to carry out exams that are physical on patients. Family nurse practitioners can also play a critical role in providing health education to different people in the community (Chan et al., 2020). They are usually focused on the family health and therefore offer education on preventive medicine which is critical for families. It is also important to note that a family nurse practitioner can keep medical record up to date. Some FNPs focus their practice on midwifery, outpatient services, or mental health services. According to Moore et al. (2020), the most popular focus areas include internal medicine and primary care. Many FNP nurses provide healthcare services in underserved communities. Today, FNPs also find jobs operating COVID-19 information hotlines (Chan et al., 2020).

There are different problems which need to be addressed through research when it comes to family nursing. Notably, the main focus of family nurse practitioners is offering preventive care to families. However, there has been an issue of resource constraints in family nursing. Notably, the family nurse practitioners are required to work on ensuring that families get preventive care. This requires them to be equipped with resources which will ensure that they carry out their duties effectively (Chan et al., 2020). However, government and agencies have failed to provide the right and sufficient resources to family nurse practitioners and this has brought about ineffectiveness in the field. The issue of resource constraints is of importance because family nurse practitioners need to be equipped and prepared for their duties. This will ensure that the health of families is improved and it will also help in improving the health of the community at large (Moore et al., 2020).

Library Search Strategies

My library search strategies include understanding how to get sources which I need to use in my research. Notably, the library provides different sources and materials which one requires to carry out his or her research. There are different categories of sources in the library. I need to ensure that I understand the type of sources which I want to get from the library. For example, there are journals which are peer reviewed and others which are not peer reviewed. In most cases, the peer reviewed journals offer reliable information which one can use in his or her research. I will ensure that I search for peer reviewed journals which were published recently and which are relevant to my topic of research. In this case, I will search for articles, journals and books which address family nursing practice. Again, I will also search for journals which address the issues which are associated with family nursing practice.

Potential Innovation

One of the most important things to note is that the government and other agencies need to realize the importance of family nurse practitioners and the role they play in the health care industry. This will ensure that they consider them as they budget for the health care system (Moore et al., 2020). Secondly, the health care organizations are also duty bound to ensure that they support the family nurse practitioners because they also play a critical role in providing preventive care to the population (Chan et al., 2020).

Developing a research proposal

My role specialization is in Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP). Caring for older adults has always been a passion of mine. As a young girl, my mother always worked in assisted living facilities, and I looked forward to performing activities with the residents either; playing card games, watching movies, or listening to them tell their fondest memories from long ago. This brings me to an issue specific to the aging population that surrounds us, Alzheimer’s disease (AD). AD is a slow continuous deterioration in cognitive function and remembrance that alters the daily function of many older adults (Day, Fedorowicz, & Rae-Grant, 2020).

My library research strategies will include the use of up to date information in relevance to the current issues that surround AD. Reviewing recent studies that have shown constructive, evidence-based practices that are supported with clinical research will be utilized to support my potential innovation. To fully understand the issue, I must gather the appropriate evidence to support a possible solution. According to both the Alzheimer’s Association and World Health Organization (WHO), there are approximately 35 million people in the world living with AD, with 5.8 million of these individuals living in the US (Tarawneh, 2020).

This disease plays a significant role in the morbidity and mortality amongst the older adult population. In the last decade alone, there have been significant improvements made in understanding the use of biomarkers to identify the complexity of AD and how research is using this knowledge to determine a more specific definition of the disease (Tarawneh, 2020). Today AD has no cure. Although research on this issue has been occurring since the early 1900s, communication and understanding need to be at the forefront of the foreseen solution. The needs of this population include the challenge of communication to meet every patient’s basic needs.

Maintenance of daily living decision making, continuous use of cognitive functions, and encouraging openness to express fears in communication are very relevant. Evidence of reviewed literature shows that combating these points will be beneficial for patients to offer the best opportunity to live an AD free life to support a sharp mind (Khalsa & Perry, 2017). I believe discussing sensitive topics and educating patients on how to maintain their cognitive function is a tremendous subject matter that I would love to incorporate in my role as a future AGPCNP. This will be an amenable focus to support a possible solution for a major ongoing problem.

I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
