NSG 4055 Home Health Is Important for Patient for Quick Recovery Discussion

Description

1. From the articles on the Healthy People 2020 website I feel like a very important topic is community health. I have commented on several discussions throughout this course about home health. I feel like home health resources are so important for health management and education. I think the goal of all patients is acceptance and self care. With community resources such as home health the patient receives education on medications that they take. The patient receives valuable education on how to better manage the symptoms of their disease. The spend at which patients are being discharged from the hospital demands some education afterwards. Family members and care givers are often forced to care for patients and loved ones after discharges. Some of these patients have ostomies, feeding tubes, or new issues that they are not knowledgeable about. “Social, economic, and environmental factors contribute to patients’ recovery following hospitalization” (Irani, Hirschman, K.Cacchione, & Bowles (2020). All of these factors can be addressed by the home health agency.

Title: NSG 4055 Home Health Is Important for Patient for Quick Recovery Discussion

Personally I think that increasing the proportion of person with health insurance is the most important objective. Illnesses are very draining especially chronic. Chronic is financially draining due to the costly doctors visits, medication fees, as well as any extra labs or testing that needs to be done that is not covered. When this occurs it is left to the individual or family to pay which can become a financial burden. ” Chronic conditions are leading drivers of our nations 3.3 trillion in annual healthcare cost. They account for 71 % of all healthcare costs and 93% of medicare fee-for service spending”(Cameron, 2019, p.11). Health insurance does not cover all the cost for chronic illnesses, but it does assist. After reviewing Healthypeople2020 (2019) it seems that 83.2 % of the population had medical insurance in 2018. Health insurance coverage ranges different according to the location geographically. Which I find interesting it should matter where you resign everything should be standard across the board. This may hinder some individuals foe example Georgia was the forth highest state for uninsured people, with rural Georgia being the most impacted(GBPI,2019) People make too little to get financial assistance towards certain medical needs. When this happens the responsible party and family members suffer from a financial burden and are unable to receive the treatment needed. This leads to the responsible party abandoning their health and not receiving the care they need. When they do access health services, they are often burdened with large medical bills and out-of-pocket expenses (Healthypeople.gov, 2014).

3. The elderly population in the US will increase due to the baby boomers increase in age and I believe that health care workers need to come up with solutions to eliminate elder abuse otherwise we will be in a situation where the number of older adults will increase as well as the abuse. Most health care workers are in the field to care for others genuinely and most disapprove of elder abuse. The two types of elder abuse discussed are neglect and financial abuse.

Neglect by a trusted other is basically the family, friends, paid caregiver, family caregiver who the elderly depends on for care or assistance (Miller, 2018). This type of neglect is the most crucial because it can result in pressure wounds, injuries such as hip/shoulder fracture as a result of falls can easily happen as a result of neglect. Death by strangulation of a confused patient can occur as a result of having all side rails on the bed up. This type of abuse can be avoided by having caregivers or family who genuinely care for the patient and can change the patient’s brief and reposition at least every 2 hours to avoid pressure ulcers. Rounding on patients every hour or two while they’re in bed can prevent falls and patients can be saved from accidental strangulation.

Financial abuse is another crucial abuse that needs to be avoided. Taking advantage of the elderly for instance in a home setting where the caregiver is in charge of grocery shopping and uses the patient’s card to shop for her personal use, or a situation where one befriends the older adult until he/she gets patient’s bank details and comes up with sad stories to make the elderly patient give out a lot of money. This type of abuse is among the most crucial because stealing or taking money from the elderly reduces the amount of money that the elderly can use for proper care in the future when they can’t care for themselves.

Detection of Elder abuse Through Emergency Care Technicians DETECT is a screening that can be used by medics to investigate and detect abuse in emergency medical services in the community. Although the finished study on this project is on the way, a lot of improvement has been seen in parts of the country that uses it (Cannell, Mars and Schoen, 2020). The saying used in facilities, “see something, say something” holds true. The health care workers must promptly report any witnessed or suspected abuse of the elderly and this will save our older adult.

4. According to The Cochran Database of Systematic Reviews, “Evidence suggests that 10% of older adults experience some form of abuse, and only a fraction of cases are actually reported or referred to social services agencies” (Baker, 2016). Elderly people who experience abuse suffer in silence because of fear of retaliation. There are many challenges in abolishing elderly abuse because so many cases go unreported. There are many cases of physical abuse that go unreported because the abuser isolates the elderly person from people, they fear will report the abuse. There has been many reports of abuse in long-term care facilities especially residents who do not have much family visiting them or checking on their well-being. Exploitation is another form of abuse that goes unnoticed because the abuser is strategic at hiding this abuse. This type of abuse is most prevalent with family members such as sons, daughters, and in-laws. Exploitation is difficult to abolish because most elderly people do not know they are being financially abused because the abuse hides it.

I consider this type of abuse the most crucial because they are two of the most prevalent forms of abuse. Physical abuse can cause injury and lead to death, some elderly people are made to lie about their injuries because they feel powerless. Exploitation is crucial because of the financial hardship it could cause the elderly person. Exploitation can cause homelessness and depression in the elderly person, placing them in a position of further abuse by others. Advocating for the elderly can start with reform of the laws that are already in place that protect the elderly such as helping to improve power of attorney and guardianship. Also, creating more resources for the elderly to ensure that they are protected from abusers. It is integral that elderly persons are protected from these people at the most vulnerable times in their lives.

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
