In nursing, it is important to have nurses who are leaders and others who are assigned a role in management. A nurse who is a leader is someone who has the ability to influence those around them as well as having the ability to understand their followers. (Whitney, 2018) A nursing leader can be either formal or informal. A formal leader is someone who has been assigned by the organization and has duties outlined for them. Whereas an informal leader is someone who does not have a specific title. A nurse who is a good leader shows compassion, trust, stability and hope and obtain their power through directing and empowering others. (Whitney, 2018) “Nursing leaders are often expected to make patient care more efficient to help reduce hospital stays, lower risk of readmissions, and reduce healthcare costs” (2021).
A nurse who is in management is assigned by an organization and manages the day to day operations in nursing. (2021) They have specific duties and responsibilities and focus on tasks such as organizing, staffing, planning, supervising, making assignments, and coordinating tasks that need to be completed. (Whitney, 2018) “A nurse manager primarily focuses on keeping daily operations in the department as efficiently as possible… They supervise nurses and other staff members and provide training as needed. (2021).
There are some goals in leadership and management that overlap. Some of these goals include influencing others in a positive way, being visionary and looking towards the future, and are not narrowly focused. Ways that leaders and management might influence others in a positive way. It is important that both managers and leaders work on their critical thinking and problem-solving skills in order to make good decisions for those who they are managing or leading. By being a nursing leader, facilitating change occurs by setting an example for those who are around you as well as being someone that others can trust. Setting standards for colleges is a great way to facilitate change.

Hi Ashley,
Thanks for sharing and I agree with what you said. Nursing leadership is important to healthcare. In general, the type of people that are attracted to the nursing profession are natural leaders (Morganelli, 2021). Nurses that make great leaders have qualities like excellent interpersonal skills, dedication, creativity, and collaboration (Morganelli, 2021). I personally think it’s really great that we are a part of a profession that has so many avenues to pursue leadership opportunities.

Hello Ashley, great work. Management consists of controlling a group or a set of entities to accomplish a goal. Leadership refers to an individual’s ability to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute toward organizational success. Influence and inspiration separate leaders from management not power and control. The world needs leaders who can think beyond problems, have a vision, and inspire people to convert challenges into opportunities, a step at a time.

Leadership and management might be similar but they are two different entities entirely. While management refers to controlling a group of individuals achieve given goals, leadership on the other hand can be defined as the ability of an individual to enable, motivate, and influence other individuals to take part and give effort on the success of an individual (Harris & Jones, 2018). Notably, it is the influence and the capacity to inspire that separates leaders from managers. The goals of management overlaps with that of leadership on numerous occasions. As much as managers take part in influencing given groups to attain its goals, they as well are involved in leadership. On the other end, when leaders take part in planning, staffing, organizing, and controlling, they are taking part in managerial tasks.
As a nurse leader, I can facilitate change in several ways by taking advantage of the overlap between management and leadership. It is a good thing for a nurse to utilize their opportunities and career to give back to the society by driving innovation out of leadership and management overlap. Nursing leaders and nursing managers play an active role in delivering high-quality patient care to all individuals (Sherman, 2018). As a nurse leader, serving my duties of giving quality and effective care to all gets easier knowing the nurse managers deliver the care patients need and that the day to day processes are delivered in a quality manner. The leadership roles that enables me to facilitate change include overseeing my nursing team and ensuring efficient care is availed to avoid hospital readmission and expensive healthcare costs.

Hi Elizabeth. You did a great job explaining the key differences between leadership and management. Management definitely carry some of the same traits and skillsets of a leader, just as a leader also carries a similar skillset as a manager would. Innovation and quality improvement are essential to both management and leadership, particularly in the nursing profession. I absolutely agree with you that it is important for nurse managers to ensure everything runs smoothly so that those in a leadership position are able to communicate and coach staff efficiently. The system of management and leadership includes planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling to ensure the best outcome for staff and the facility as a whole (Whitney, 2018). Thanks for your post!

Hi,
I enjoyed reading your discussion question response. I agree with you that nursing leadership is important. Did you know there is an organization called American Organization for Nursing Leadership for nurses to join? This website and organization seems to be a great resource for nurses. I especially found the section on nurse leaders advocating for nurse issues and priorities quite interesting. The AONL is advocating to elevate nursing research data, growing the workforce and promoting the value of nursing (AONL, 2022). I think nurse leaders gathering together to better the workforce is great for the profession.

Within the profession of nursing, both leadership and management roles are essential. Leaders are responsible for overseeing staff members and the wellbeing of the unit or facility as a whole, with the goal of quality improvements for both individual patients and functioning of the unit. Leadership and management take on similar characteristics, but there are key differences to each role. According to Whitney (2018), managerial tasks include planning, organizing, staffing, evaluating, supervising, negotiating, and representing. Typically, management roles have more power and authority than the typical leadership role. However, one overlap between the goals of management and leadership roles is the focus on team improvement and patient care improvement. This is a common goal that most professional roles in healthcare share. The Healthy Work Environment Model created by the AACN in 2016 comes to mind when talking about shared goals. This model outlines the six standards shared among all levels and roles within professional nursing: skilled communication, true collaboration, effective decision-making, appropriate staffing, meaningful recognition, and authentic leadership. These elements are the foundation of shared goals among both leadership and management. An example includes a charge nurse and unit director coming together to implement a workplace violence training program on the unit
for the ultimate goal of strengthening the unit internally and promoting confidence among staff. As a nurse leader, I could facilitate change by reaching out to management with concerns that my staff might have. As management and leaders share the same overarching goals, they are on the same team regardless of power or authority over staff.
