Interprofessional collaboration is a process involving jointly advantageous active participation between independent professionals in which each member of the health care team has knowledge and skills that underwrite to the care provided and their relationships are governed by negotiated shared norms and visions (Melkamu et al., 2020). Teamwork and collaboration are competencies expected of healthcare professionals and refer to functioning effectively within nursing and interprofessional teams, fostering open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision making to achieve quality patient care (Masters, 2017). Collaboration requires communication among team members involved where every professional take part of their clinical expertise, that is within their scope of practice. Interdisciplinary team conference can be considered interprofessional collaboration. The more eyes laid on the patient, the more chances of reducing, if not eliminate errors. All members of the interprofessional healthcare team must combine their skills knowledge, and resources to improve outcomes, and nurses and physicians must modify their traditional roles and work more collaboratively as colleagues (Masters, 2017).

The trend that is being helpful nowadays is the emergence of electronic medical record (EMR). With paperless charting, communication is now accessible electronically. A good example is the platform (data software) used by big healthcare systems such as Ascension (formerly Amita) and Duly Health (formerly Dupage Medical Group) in Illinois. These two systems can now view each other’s chartings provided the patient consented on merging data. This makes it easier for medical providers provide continuity of care without waiting for fax or hard copy of diagnostics or lab results as well as progress notes.

I agree with your post. What healthcare professionals must first realize is that each profession has an area of expertise and respect of the specialty is of the utmost importance. There or medical issues, nursing issues, and pharmaceutical issues. Collaboration of the professions allows the team to come together and resolve issues. Take for example a medication issue. It could lie within how the medication was transcribed by the physician, or how the medication is being administered by the nurse, or the preparation and delivery of  the medication to the nursing unit(Irajpour et al.,2019). I can recall when medications were coming to the nursing h if and needed to be reconstituted at the time of delivery. Some nurses were not reconstituting the medication because they missed the inservice and was failing to deliver the dose. With the next dose due the nurse would discover the bag of medicine not reconstituted. Discovery of a medication that could cause great harm to a patient, especially if the following nurse did not follow up on the missing dose. The third problem lie in that the reconstituted medication was not dissolved in the amount of fluid the order was written. If all three professions were collaborating together the medication issue could have been avoided or discovered before the patient condition deteriorated to sepsis.

Thank you for your initial discussion post you shared. Interprofessional collaboration is an essential tool in healthcare practice because of its numerous benefits it poses to the healthcare industry. First, there is a shared decision-making process that helps in creating meaningful and reliable decisions in healthcare service provision (McNiff, 2018). Besides, the patient gets satisfactory services because different healthcare professionals have different areas of specialization hence they offer specialized services. Many healthcare facilities should encourage the use of interprofessional collaboration in care delivery so that patients and their family members enjoy benefits attached to it.

Interprofessional collaboration enables the sharing of ideas among professionals from diverse disciplines. By sharing ideas, nurses become more competent in their work by updating their skills and knowledge and learning innovations in other disciplines that can be applied within their specialty to help patients (Shirazi et al., 2018). Evidence shows that nurses who participate in interprofessional collaboration are more skilled and competent than those who do not. More competent nurses provide higher quality care, guarantee patient safety, and commit fewer errors when handling patients. Interprofessional collaboration promotes high-quality care since professionals taking care of a patient have a holistic view of the patient. This is because different professionals have different approaches to handling problems. Different perspectives in diagnosis and treatment make solving problems arising in the care environment easier.

Collaboration means patients will be handled by the most qualified healthcare professional available in the organization, thus providing higher quality care (ANA, n.d). Collaboration reduces errors by enabling consultation between different professionals. Through constant communication, healthcare professionals can discuss a patient’s problem and devise the best intervention approach. The approach also guarantees patient safety due to the fast pace with which patients are handled. Patients do not have to wait to receive services since they can be handled by any available professional. The use of Electronic Health Records (EHR) in sharing patient data will require more interprofessional collaboration. Through EHR, real-time data is available for all the healthcare professionals handling a patient. More professionals will need to be incorporated within the EHR system to enable instant consultations among healthcare workers to reduce the time that is wasted when patients wait for outcomes.

I love your discussion post, simple and clear. Do you know that inter-professional collaboration competency is a major factor in other to achieve great teamwork? The inter-professional collaboration consists of four core competencies: 1) values and ethics for inter-professional practice, 2) roles and responsibilities for collaborative practice, 3) inter-professional communication practices, and 4) inter-professional teamwork (Jakubowski and Perron, 2018).

Acceptance of the values and ethics of inter-professional practice means working together while respecting the

expertise of those in other disciplines. Being aware of the professional roles and responsibilities of other team

members; communicating effectively with patients, families, and other healthcare professionals; and building

relationships to plan, implement and evaluate safe care all contribute to the health of patients and

communities. This is now an expectation for baccalaureate, master’s, and doctoral education for advanced practice, and they are also included in the educational expectations of other healthcare disciplines (Jakubowski and Perron, 2018). With the advent of Patient-Centered Medical Homes (PCMH), inter-professional collaboration is necessary as each discipline is represented in the PCMH as care coordination across the continuum advance.

Improved patient care and health outcomes are made possible via interprofessional collaboration. It contributes to the formation of healthcare teams with a variety of distinct viewpoints and ideas that are beneficial to the improvement of patient care. Furthermore, it contributes to lowering the likelihood of medical mistakes. Because of interprofessional collaboration and the sharing of expertise, the likelihood of mistakes decreases as more experts work together (Maher et al., 2014). The reduction of operational inefficiencies and process redundancies results in a reduction in the overall cost of healthcare delivery. The promotion of interprofessional cooperation in nursing and the spirit of teamwork should be encouraged by healthcare facilities in order to enhance patient outcomes.

Interprofessional collaboration is important for the healthcare system. It is when two or more individuals work together to produce an anticipated and shared outcome. Collaborations usually occur in the form of research, in clinical practice or in providing education. Collaborative strengths help better health services and the outcomes for those individuals that are served.

“Littlechild and Smith state that collaboration leads to improved efficiency, improved skills mix, greater levels of responsiveness, more holistic services, innovation and creativity, and a more user-centered practice.” (Green,2015) The World Health Organization (WHO) has linked IPC with better outcomes in family health, infectious disease, humanitarian efforts, responses to epidemics, and noncommunicable diseases. There have been studies in which shows the changes in how access to care has improved as well as the use of specialty care. Chronic disease outcomes have also shown positive changes and increased safety.  indicators of safety, patient care, and environment of care, such as complications and error rates, length of hospital stay, conflict among caregivers, staff turnover, and mortality rates, have all been shown to decrease in collaborative care environments.

Theses interprofessional collaborations help decrease error when developing a system such as daily huddles, or huddles at every shift where important information is being communicated to make staff aware.

The health practice is multidisciplinary, and many factors are considered to deduce that patient care is efficient. Medication errors should be minimal, if any, care quality should be topnotch, and safety should be at maximum levels. To ensure that health care providers can achieve these outcomes, interprofessional collaboration is crucial. It is the way to error-reduction, higher-quality care, and safety enhancement. Its nature will also change as new trends continue to emerge in the health practice.

Regarding the role of interprofessional collaboration in reducing medical errors, this form of coordination reduces the communication gap between health care providers. According to Bosch and Mansell (2015), organizations that embrace interprofessional collaboration are better positioned to detect errors before they happen. It is a way of supplementing the outcomes of electronic health records to improve health data handling. In providing higher-quality care, interprofessional collaboration recommends a form of care where care providers consult each other (Morley & Cashell, 2017). Considering that each health care provider views the patient uniquely, a combination of their insights promotes patient-centered care. Doing so improves the quality of care, considering that care is tailored to respond to patient needs. Regarding patient safety, its ability to minimize medication errors is a safety enhancement practice. Interprofessional collaboration reduces inefficiencies, which improves the type of care that patients receive.

Like other aspects of care, interprofessional collaboration is not immune to the influence of trends. An example of emerging trends likely to change the nature of interprofessional collaboration is electronic data sharing. Due to the increased use of electronic health records [EHRs], a lot of data is available, and health practitioners must coordinate more electronically to share data more efficiently. They should be more responsive to virtual health and other technologies like telehealth that deal with a lot of data exchange.
