Nursing shortages are a new problem that not just the United States is facing but the whole world. As the nursing shortages increase in the United States the demand for nurses can change the current healthcare style. There are several reasons why nursing shortages are happening. Some of the reasons are from the current nurses retiring and the increasing demand of the population that is aging. Another reason is the current COVID-19 pandemic that changed the world which caused nurse-to-patient ratio to increase due to the staff shortages causing the current nurses to leave and be burned out leaving the nursing field in general.  

The aging population will put a stain on the current nursing workforce since by the year of 2030 the baby-boom generation will be at the age of retirement which will bring approximately 73 million people into the population that would require more health services. This also means that with the current nurses who are part of the baby-boom generation will then retire as well.   

A way to try and counter the shortages would be to have nursing schools and health centers to recruit new nurses. With the help of the government this can be done. With the CARES Act, the nurses who work in underserved areas get help with training and educational financial aid. There is also a Nursing Loan Repayment Program that offers to pay up to 85% of educational loans for nurses that work in areas that have critical nursing shortages.   

So with the help of the government and having educational facilities be able to take on more students then this will help with the nursing shortages that we are facing.

Great job discussing the events that have contributed (or will continue to contribute) to the nursing shortage. I agree that prior to the pandemic, nurses were already spread thin. My thoughts had always been it was the nature of the job, as nurses are prone to compassion fatigue and get burnt out easily. The added stress of the Covid pandemic and loss of life further exacerbated this. After the mass exodus, the nursing world is left with a large void to fill. 

I live in the state of Arizona and one example of how the nursing shortage has been addressed in my state is that they are committed to increasing the number of graduating nurses by over 100 %. Arizona’s public universities have proposed a novel plan to rapidly expand their capacity to train and deploy nurses ready to enter the workforce as soon as next year. If approved, we estimate that ASU, NAU, and UA will be able to graduate 500 more nurses per year by 2026. (DuVal, 2022)

The current nursing shortage arises from different events. According Haddad et al. (2020) nurses are a core component of the healthcare system and constitute the largest section of the health profession. The American Nurses Association (ANA) asserts that more registered nurses will be required as there will be jobs for this cadre of health professionals in the country. The implication is that a nursing shortage that currently affects the health care sector will persist. The events associated with the nursing shortage are multiple as well as issues of concern. These include an aging population that is placing increased demand on care provision (AACN, 2020). The retiring baby boomers will require health services and increase the shortage. 

 Secondly, an aging nursing workforce is exacerbating the situation as there are close to 1 million registered nurses aged over 50 years. Thirdly, nurse burnout due to heavy workload and burden contributes to the current shortage. The insufficient staffing levels raises stress levels for nurses and affects the overall job satisfaction. According to Haddad et al., (2020), more registered nurses will be required in US by the year 2022 than any other profession. This shortage is attributed to various factors such as high turnover, inadequate potential educators, and imbalance workforce distribution. In the state of Pennsylvania the issue of nursing shortage is widespread. The events that contribute to this shortage include an aging population of baby boomers who require more health care needs. It is projected that by the year 2030, one in five people in the US will be an elderly citizen. The other factor is aging workforce.

As the population ages, nursing workforce is also aging. Currently, it is estimated that one in three current nursing staff is above 50 years old, which implies that a third of nursing workforce may go to retirement in the next ten to fifteen years. The other factor is challenges in balancing career and family, especially female nurses who often take leave or abandon nursing profession during childbearing years. Nurse burnout also contributes to nursing shortage as overburdened nurses opt to leave the profession (Haddad et al., 2020)..  

One way to resolve nursing shortage is through empowering nurses (Haddad et al., 2020). Health care settings need to be creative to achieve the needs of nurses while delivering quality and safe care to patients. An organizational culture and environment that ensures nurses are empowered and motivated is essential in restoring and sustaining the nursing staff. Nurses who are empowered to be autonomous and engaged in decision making in critical areas such as staffing ratios tend to suffer less burnout and remain committed to work.
