Health care reform has helped change the way we provide care to our patients. Where before we provided a more disease oriented health care now due to the health care reform we are more focused on prevention. Health care reform ensures that everyone regardless of income status has some kind of medical insurance. For example the affordable care act increased the amount of people who before could not afford health insurance. These newly ensured people were now able to go in to see a primary care physician for regular check ups instead of only going in to the hospital when they were seriously ill. The affordable care act continues to support and facilitate the shift to wellness and prevention. Making health care affordable and having the resources such as clinics for patients to be seen, healthcare services that encourage early screening for preventative care. Such as mammograms and colonoscopies. The best health care is preventative care and education. The more a patient knows about diseases they are at risk for the better prepared they are to take steps to prevent it from happening. Even if diseases such as cancer which sometimes are not preventable early screening can give a patient a greater survival rate. The early it is detected the earlier treatment can be initiated.

Immunizations, access to healthcare providers, and chronic disease prevention are the three dominant parameters of preventive care (Batarseh et al., 2020). People who maintain a normal BMI and undergo an annual physical are also eligible for benefits at some organizations. Taking advantage of the funding allocated to public health communities will enable them to provide preventive services to many patients. Americans will continue to benefit from this trend as it helps to improve patient outcomes and access to health care. Preventive care education is one of the responsibilities of nurses.

A person with diabetes can be taught to diet appropriately to reduce their risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and other diabetic complications. By enrolling in affordable coverage, patients can also have control over their insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act. A community nurse’s role is to promote wellness and health through patient-centered care; the Healthy people 2020 initiative (2014) included the objective of health-related quality of life (HRQOL). In the World Health Organization (1995), wellness is a multifaceted approach encompassing psychological and physical health, considered relevant to public health since 1949. Prevention and wellness methods have many advantages over disease-oriented approaches. As a result of this process, unnecessary hospitalizations, treatment costs, and repeated testing have been reduced, and the quality of patient care and medication outcomes have improved.
