NRS 433Topic 5 DQ 2

According to the textbook, nurses in various settings are adopting a research-based (or evidence-based) practice that incorporates research findings into their decisions and interactions with clients. How do you see this being applied in your workplace?

Topic 5 DQ 2

Research-based or evidence-based practice is so essential in nursing as it aids nurses in pinpointing the care strategies which may help their patients, and enables nurses to deliver care to patients through the application of validated interventions. It also enables nurses to integrate research evidence, preferences of the patients, and clinical expertise, and to provide individualized care to the patient (Ellis, 2019). In my workplace, nurses incorporate the research findings into their decisions as well as interactions with the clients in several ways that include measuring blood pressure non-invasively among children and using intravenous catheters for blood administration. The nurses measure the blood pressure in accordance with research-based or evidence-based practice. This results in the accuracy in measurements that help them provide effective treatment to patients (Craig & Dowding, 2019). The nurses measure the blood pressure of the children using the auscultatory method and comparing the measurement with the data collected using the oscillometric method. The nurses in my place of work follow research-based practice when utilizing intravenous catheters in administering blood for the packed-red blood cell transfusions. The nurses utilize smaller gauge catheter that increases patient’s comfort (White, 2016).

Additionally, nurses in my workplace incorporate the research findings into their decisions as well as interactions with the clients regarding control of infections and giving oxygen to the patients having chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The nurses help prevent hospital-acquired infections by adhering to or complying with the evidence-based infections control policies that include wearing personal protective clothing, and keeping the health care environment clean, and also utilizing barrier precautions as well as practicing correct and proper handwashing (Craig & Dowding, 2019). The nurses properly follow the evidence-based or research-based practice in giving oxygen to the patient having COPD (Schmidt & Brown, 2017). This practice carried out by the nurses assists in preventing organ failure and hypoxia, and enhances the quality of life of the patients with COPD, and helps them live longer.

As nurses it is essential that we are not only following our hospitals policy but also the most recent updated EBP. The knowledge in evidence based practice should always be taken into consideration when making clinical decisions. I can personally see how this knowledge can be used while in the hospital. As stated by Mackey, it is imperative that nurses use evidence based practice with the hopes of bridge the gap between theory and clinical and minimize error (Mackey, 2018). Utilizing EBP in the clinical setting is proven to reduce error. This is why it is something that I try to incorporate into my practice. In my hospital there is a high incident of hospital acquired pressure injuries. I will personally use evidence based practice regarding pressure injuries in practice. As stated by Curley, the use of the braden scale for each patient as well as a frequent turning schedule will reduce the risk of pressure injuries (Curley,2018). SInce finding out this information I make sure to pay close attention to my patients’ braden scale scores. I also ensure that they are being turned every two hours.

Re: Topic 5 DQ 2

Evidence-based practices are important in making nursing-related decisions. The adoption of this decision-making method is important. Evidence-based practice in nursing provides a method of using scientifically proven and critically appraised evidence. Such evidence is important in making important health decisions and delivering quality healthcare to a population (Majid et al., 2011). The decision to adopt the evidence-based depends on the level of awareness by nurse and nurse leaders in different institutions or healthcare centers. There might be barriers to adopting this decision-making method, but these are dealt with depending on the interest, knowledge, and decision of nurses. Positivity to the idea of evidence-based research is key in its adoption. It guides on how easily nurses will be convinced to start using it. The adoption of this practice at my workplace is possible. It will entirely depend on the nurse-leaders permission to use it. The nurse workers in the workplace are well-informed on the evidence-based research method and are positive towards its application. The nurses at this place feel that they have sufficient skills to adopt the method and that they understand that it might be time-consuming, but the fact that they know its advantages, they will consider adopting it. If nurse leaders consider benchmarking from nurses already using the practice, its application at the workplace will be easier and effectively adopted. The moderate workload at the workplace enables the adoption of an evidence-based practice since professionals will get enough time to analyze all information and get evidence-based solutions to problems.
