Lina Rogers, the first school nurse to be named by New York City in 1902 (Whitney, 2022). First, I’d like to make it clear that I never thought I would become a school nurse, it was a retirement job in my eyes. I came out of nursing school, guns blazing and ready to conquer telemetry and make my way to the Cath lab, but life had other plans for me. I am a school nurse at an elementary school in my hometown, and I am proud. School nursing is not what I thought it would be, and I honestly did not think I would be reading about it in my studies. School nursing is often at the bottom of the list for nurses (it was on mine), but my mentality quickly changed about it, because I grew to love it. As I was reading the paragraph about Lina Rogers, I caught myself re-reading the paragraph because it resonated with me. Rogers served the poor and those living in unsanitary conditions, spreading illness and disease to their neighbors (Whitney, 2022). I work in a very underserved part of the city out in the county limits, houses are made up of different materials people can afford and it is made up of Mexican immigrants. Healthcare isn’t a priority because it is not affordable, they result to getting antibiotics for everything in Mexico. In a school made up of almost 600 students, I am able to provide Telemed (telehealth) services to my students from my nurse’s office. This alleviates trips to the doctor when transportation is an issue, and it often is for these families. School nursing is mentally and emotionally draining, and I guess if I could converse with Rogers, I’d ask her “How did you do it with the little you had?” Technology has advanced so much since her time but how can I educate better and how can I reach a demographic that does not want to be educated? How can I promote health that starts at home if home continues to be the contributing factors to acute illness.

A notable nurse that I would want to sit down and talk to is Dr. Ildaura Murillo- Rhode, PhD, RN, FAAN who was a pioneer of nursing for the hispanic community. Like many of us Latinos she immigrated from Panama and saw the need for education because of the lack of Hispanic nurses in her community in Texas (NAHN). She was a pioneer in the founding of National Association of Hispanic Nurses, she was a professor, and contributor to UNICEF. Learning happens slowly and consistently. Take for example the process we went through when we learned to read. There were steps, from holding a book the right way up, to recognising letters to phonetics, years of practising and finally fluency.
It’s not actually that hard to learn to read for neurotypical kids, but you do have to develop building blocks and commit to regular practise. It is the willingness to practise that contributes to success as a student.
Consistency is becoming less common in adolescents. Some of the areas most affected by teens’ lack of consistency are mathematics, music and languages. In each of these areas, there needs to be a mastery of some basic skills that only comes with practise. Failure is one of the greatest tools in the learning process. Unfortunately, too many people are simply overwhelmed by the feeling of failure rather than being able to stand back and look at the lessons it can teach us. Having the tenacity to stare down failure is an extraordinary skill.
Teach kids to look at failure in an analytical way. What is the size and gravity of the failure? What are its consequences? What can be learnt from the experience? Goal setting focuses a student’s attention towards certain behaviours and information and away from distractions. Research tells us that incremental goals are far more effective than large goals.
If a student is able to break down a big goal, like solving a big problem, innovating or achieving a higher grade, into small bite-sized pieces they are more likely to be successful. If they can incorporate the feedback they receive on each occasion, the small wins eventually lead to big achievements.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments.
