I was rather enlightened today after reading those resources about  plagiarism and realizing that I may have offended authors in the past through my ignorance on this matter . Plagiarism is the use of another’s words or ideas without clear identification of the source (Price, 2014). This can be intentional or unintentional.  Intentional plagiarism involves a person who knowingly copied the work of another individual and purposefully omitted credit to the original author to take credit for the ideas. Plagiarism is a very serious academic offense (Prentice,2004,p.7). As a student, reusing someone’s ideas and making it your own is basically cheating and may result in probation, getting no credit or even expulsion from the institution. Being in the nursing profession, I oathed to practice within my scope of practice and by practicing what is ethically right for thus improving patient outcomes. Therefore, I personally believe that plagiarism should be avoided at all costs because it can harm the integrity and lives of others that we care for and at large the reputation of this educational institution . Nursing practice is solely based on evidence based practice from research and valuable sources such as my nursing textbooks . According to A,Smriti 2020, Nurses are supposed to be the most trusted professionals today. Upholding values and standards of academic integrity is foundational if nurses are to sustain this trust. There is a wealth of knowledge and incredible resources available on the GCU student access to develop my APA writing substantially such as the online library. So, what is plagiarism? Plagiarism is defined as “The practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own.” (Faulkner, 2018). The integrity of a baccalaureate degree as well as a nursing license is based on the perception of other people. Trust is a reflection on the sincerity and virtue of the nursing profession. If that trust is broken, then the public perception of nearly anything brought forth by a healthcare provider will be questioned. By correctly using and bringing evidence-based practice (EBP) to the forefront of healthcare, lives can be changed for the better.

One example of plagiarism is called unintentional plagiarism. This can occur by incorrectly citing references or poor paraphrasing. (Faulkner, 2018). This often happens because of a lack of knowledge or understanding. By utilizing the many resources provided by GCU and seeking help, this type of plagiarism can be avoided.

Another example of plagiarism is defined as a person who “knowingly copied the work of another individual and purposefully omitted credit to the original author to take credit for the ideas” (Faulkner, 2018). As opposed to unintentional plagiarism, this type can be perceived as more malicious and calculated.

A third example, which is actually quite common, is paraphrasing. This occurs when the writer “make(s) minor changes and use others’ writing” (https:\\libguides.lindsey.edu). Changing the words around or using synonyms can be considered this type of plagiarism. The writer in this instance is not expressing any new ideas.

There are many tools available to GCU students to avoid plagiarism and ensure academic integrity. One way is to utilize the GCU online library and databases. Many tutorials are available through the student success center. The writing center offers help in research, writing, templates as well as faculty that are able to assist at any point in the writing process. Another way I can ensure academic integrity is by evaluating websites that are used in research as sources. Guidelines that were put forth include ensuring “Authority, Accuracy, Objectivity, Currency, and Coverage” (lc.gcumedia.com). These guidelines provide a starting point in verifying the integrity of websites that may be used for EBP.

These are just a couple of ways I can maintain my integrity through my academic growth and I look forward to exploring many more.

Chioma, those are great tips to correctly paraphrase. I especially like to study material then explain it in my own words without repeatedly going back to the source. It helps me to understand and retain information better.

It is unfortunate how common plagiarism is today in our schools. While researching the most common types of plagiarism, I found that one of them is called “complete plagiarism”. An example of this would be paying someone to complete your paper for you and turning it in as your own work (GrammarlyBlog, 2022). This surprised me but also did not; I remember in high school, there were some bullies that threatened other students to do their homework for them. This always made me so sad but I was too shy to speak up about it and feared getting in trouble if I was somehow involved. I now know I should anonymously told on the bullies to the teacher.

I am grateful that GCU has provided great resources about how to cite properly using APA format.

After reviewing the topic resources regarding plagiarism, I have a better understanding of why it is so important for a student to cite one’s resources appropriately to avoid accidental or potential plagiarism. If a student quotes a person directly, then the correct citation or source must be included in the text, or that student is assumed to be taking credit for someone else’s written work and turning it in as their own work. Another example of plagiarism is copying a person’s work but changing around a few words or sentences to where it’s not word for word, and that student turning it in as their own work.

As plagiarism has continued to occur, schools have implemented resources such as “turn it in,” or “lopes” which Grand Canyon uses, to prescreen a student’s work for plagiarism before it is submitted to the university. As students continue to intentionally or unintentionally plagiarize someone else’s work as their own, schools, colleges, and universities have had to enforce stronger rules and disciplines for the student who plagiarizes. Properly citing, quoting, and listing sources in the references portion of a student’s completed paper will prevent a student from being accused of submitting another person’s work as their own.

As nurses we have a certain code of morality to uphold, not just at work, but each and every day, and being truthful and honest even in writing papers for school is important. Being dishonest and stealing someone’s work may seem small to another person, but to the person whose work was stolen it is major. Plagiarism is completely avoidable if a student takes the time to reference the resources appropriately and list each source individually.
