Professional accountability in nursing is the ability to accept responsibility for one’s own conduct. This means using professional judgement, knowledge, skills, and the use of evidence base practice. The use of these decision-making efforts aide in fostering a positive patient outcome (Faubion, 2023). Nurses who understand the importance of professional accountability tend to do well because they deliver safer nursing care. Professional accountability in nursing let patient know that the nurse is trustworthy and dependable. This gives patients a sense of comfort which helps to build a trusting patient nurse relationship. For example, a patient admitted to the medical surgical unit was told by the day shift nurse that the next shift nurse would remove her foley catheter. The night shift nurse did not remove her catheter. This resulted in the patient feeling discomfort and subsequently became very upset. This situation was brought to the attention of the nursing supervisor and the doctor. Prophylactic antibiotic was ordered and administered to prevent catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI). The day shift nurse went back to the patient apologetically and took responsibility for what happened.

CAUTI is one of the most prevalent nosocomial infections worldwide. Twelve to sixteen percent of hospitalized patents are usually catheterized during their hospital stay. This makes the daily risk for acquiring CAUTI approximately three to seven percent. Sepsis or bacteremia may occur in some patients which can sometimes be life threatening. Nurses needs to be aware of these risk factors and be proactive in advocating for their patients.

Selfcare is being able to turn to religion or spirituality as a coping mechanism. This helps to alleviate stress in our day to day lives and create harmony in our personal lives (Collins, 2005).

Being answerable to oneself and others for one’s own actions is what the American Nursing Association’s Code of Ethics defines as professional responsibility. We must not only uphold the highest ethical and clinical standards for ourselves, but also be ready to assume a professional role should the required level of care not be provided. Working as a nurse today has it challenges with the biggest one being patient to nurse ratio. As the profession grows so is our responsibility. A lot of emphasis is placed on nurses performing at their best and no one notices the pressure we are constantly under dealing with a high patient ratio. Biting on more than you can chew is a hazard. The same goes for taking on more responsibilities than you can handle is putting your profession at risk. From the time you report to duty a patient list is given to you as your assignment. These patients are your responsibility for the entire shift; you will guard them with your life.

Not one of these patients is alike, sometimes we have the language barrier, or you have those who are mute or aphasia, total dependent, the needy ones and of course the disorderly and impatient ones. While working under these pressures nurses need to create an environment where the patients feel safe, and care can be provided holistically. Environmental change is needed for optimal health (Zborowsky, 2014). Thankfully we have the nursing process as a guide to keep nurses on the right path. It allows nurses to think critically, good clinical reasoning and judgment and decision-making skills. Nurses organized patient care based on the traditional scientific processes of observation, hypothesis, investigation, and corroboration by applying scientific approach theories (Humphris, 1979).

In addition to having a duty to patients, nurses also have a duty to take care of themselves, and this is specifically stated in the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses.  According to Watson Caritas, before we can give genuine caring and love to others, we must learn how to offer caring, love, forgiveness and compassion and mercy to ourselves. In other words, we can only give what we have, or treat people the way we want to be treated. The bible says that Christian’s care for themselves not just for their own good, but so that they can care for others.
