Title: NRS 429V Week 5 Discussion Question 1

There are many good points made in this article with effective solutions to a degree. Nursing is a challenging field because we are expected to excel in every aspect of the job, knowing skills, communication with patients and providers, getting drinks, snacks and calling family for updates. It can be very overwhelming to complete all of these tasks for 6-8 patients a day and find time to chart on the patients in an effective manner. I do understand there needs to be compassion and communication along with effective skills and knowledge, but it can be challenging to complete effectively. I really agree with liaison staff however many hospitals don’t want to spend money on more positions and having volunteers is a wonderful idea. They are there because they genuinely love the job. We have volunteers where I work, and they are truly such a blessing to have. They help in more ways than they understand with getting blankets and snacks, sitting with patients who just want someone to listen, communicating surgery updates and taking specimens to lab is just a few things that our volunteers do to help ensure we can perform the best patient care possible.

Nursing is an art and a science. I remember hearing that a great deal in my early nursing school days. It became something I learned but quickly forgot once I was on the floor running from patient to patient. This statement still holds a great deal of weight in today’s world despite the many changes in care. I do believe there is an art to taking care of a person. An art to foreseeing a need, reading the room, and addressing a concern a patient has just the right way. It is the art of understanding a human being. The art of love without the possibility of reciprocation. I have always considered my profession a true honor, like someone going into a war and just fighting the good fight because it is the right thing to do. We as nurses are literally in the trenches of our patients darkest days, when they are helpless, afraid, and confused. We are the light and we must project that light to initiate evidence based practices, to gain the trust and understanding of our patients. I truly love our profession. And while I do at times work with nurses that just do not seem to hold the compassion nursing requires, I am happy to be where I am today.

This is a great article, and my main take away is that finding that right balance between nursing as an art and nursing as a science is essential in providing a wonderful patient experience. When I encounter challenging patients, I pause and try to look deeper to understand where that negative behavior is coming from. Most of the time it is from their frustration that they cannot do what they typically do in the comfort of their homes. The article made a good point about the patients not being in their element and in an unfamiliar environment, and that alone may already be giving them anxiety or worry, thus affecting their response to care. Having years of experience as a nurse with admirable clinical skills is not enough to say that one is an exceptional nurse. A preceptor once asked me what the difference is between a good nurse and an exceptional nurse. He said a good nurse does what is expected of him or her, while an exceptional nurse is the one that treats the patient as if they were a family member. The exceptional nurse puts themselves in the patient’s shoes, and goes the extra mile to provide a positive patient experience. When I read the article, I immediately remembered that conversation. Providing care, compassion, and communicating effectively with the patient and their family so that the nurse can effectively implement interventions is an art. We should remember that we are our patient’s source of support and assurance, their safety blanket when they are not in their comfort zone. Most of the time, the patients do not remember how sick they felt, how many times they were poked, or the painful procedures they had to go through. What they remember the most is how their nurse took care of them and how their nurse made them feel during their hospital stay.

Title: NRS 429V Week 5 Discussion Question 1

Patient education is one of the most important nursing interventions in any healthcare setting. It is the patient’s right to be informed about their condition, prognosis, and available treatments so they can make intelligent decisions about their health and lifestyle or behavior (Edelman et al., 2021). When patients have a good understanding of their condition and the treatment plan, they feel more involved and empowered to comply with interventions. Health education helps individuals achieve optimal levels of health. It promotes self-management of acute and chronic illnesses and continuity of care after discharge, and crucial in providing safe and patient-centered care (Potter et al., 2022). Health education must be relevant to the needs, language, and literacy of the patient, or the population in a community setting. The nursing process helps provide a clinical decision-making approach so that the nurse can develop and implement an individualized plan of care for the patient. In developing health education, it is important to assess the patient’s needs, literacy levels, cultural background, and other factors that may influence their perception of health and readiness to learn. The nursing diagnosis element helps with the identification of conditions that may interfere with learning. Planning entails creating objectives for learning, including behavioral goals and an ideal method of teaching. Implementation includes involving the patient in the education process. Families may also be included if appropriate. Evaluation determines the outcomes of the health teaching method, content, and relevance (Potter et al., 2022).

An example of an issue that families may experience today is obesity, both in adults and children. This is mainly because of poor food choices and lack of exercise or physical activities. To address this issue, the nurse needs to establish trust and rapport with the family members. The nurse can then gather information from the family about their eating habits, food consumption, access to nutritious food, activities, health practices, and their knowledge about obesity. It is important to know how the family learns so that the nurse can figure out the approach or method of teaching to use and prepare the age-appropriate materials for the family. Effective communication is key to providing quality education. The health risks of the condition must be clearly explained so that the family can make better food choices and lifestyle changes. The nurse should also make referrals to appropriate interdisciplinary team members and share resources or available assistance that the family might need.

Title: NRS 429V Week 5 Discussion Question 1

Mrs. Jones, a widow, is no longer able to live independently and is requiring more and more help with her self-care. Her daughter, Susie, who is married with three school-aged children, agrees to let her mother move in with her. Susie is concerned with balancing the demands of her career and the needs of her family, especially now that her elderly and chronically ill mother will need assistance. She is also unsure about how she feels with the reversal of roles, having to now be the primary caregiver of her mother. How can the nurse, caring for this family, assist with the changes they are about to undergo? How can both the family structural theory and the family developmental theory be applied to this scenario? How can health education enhance health promotion for this family?

Which theoretical perspective, that guides the nursing process with assessment of the family, do you find to be the most helpful and effective? Why is this theory more appealing to you than the others?

Using the family structural theory (see the textbook as a model) how can families created following second marriages learn to function as one?

Traditionally, nutrition programs were targeted to the indigent and poor populations in developing countries. Many of today’s

Americans are malnourished also, but they are inundated with unhealthy foods and require a multidisciplinary approach to nutrition education. What would be the three most important points to include in a public nutrition program? Provide current literature to support your answer and include two nutritional education community resources.

What is the importance of cultural competency in nursing practice? Support your response.

Diversity among individuals, as well as cultures, provides a challenge for nurses when it comes to delivering meaningful health

promotion and illness prevention-based education. How do teaching principles, varied learning styles (for both nurses and patients), and teaching methodologies impact the approach to education? How do health care providers overcome differing points of view regarding health promotion and disease prevention? Provide an example.

According to the assigned article, “Health Disparity and Structural Violence: How Fear Undermines Health Among Immigrants at

Risk for Diabetes,” narratives tell the story of the interconnectedness between fear and health. Thematically, the issue of fear is a dominant feature that affects how an individual approaches day-to-day living and health. Explain the relationship between fear and health identified by the researchers in the article. Do you agree that structural violence perpetuates health disparity?

In the assigned reading, “How to Write Learning Objectives That Meet Demanding Behavioral Criteria,” Kizlik explained that

“objectives that are used in education, whether they are called learning objectives, behavioral objectives, instructional objectives, or performance objectives are terms that refer to descriptions of observable behavior or performance that are used to make judgments about learning.” How do health providers design educational programs to clearly articulate objectives to engage both patients as well as families?

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
