I can speak for myself in relation to only a drop in the bucket of time in home health.I also worked on med sure floor of hospital as well. I felt in home health we HAD to understand the family unit. If I did not , I could not do my job well. For example, if I did not educate the entire “family” , my heart healthy diet teaching would be near pointless because the actual patient is not doing the cooking or shopping if I’m coming to the home. I also knew that if I could not enlist it has a family plan of action, it would not work very well or long. I needed everyone to “buy in ” to the new eating styles.Everyone that bought , prepared, or ate the food in the home. Each visit I would review foods, changes that worked, changes that didn’t , who it was easy for , and who struggled. Thats just one example that is pretty basic but I am sure my understanding of the family could always improve. That just a perspective of the work. Home health is a great deal of teaching.

I think many professions lack diversity. I think there is also a stereotype in a lot of professions about what the employee would/should look like. Law enforcement specifically come to mind for me. Incidents in the world have shown how the lack of diversity among police officers has harmed so many families. People of color have to worry about themselves and their family members every time they leave the house. The constant fear and questions of “Will my family member make it home?”, “What happens if my family member is stopped by the police?” Will my family members or I be a victim of police brutality?” These questions leave a constant stress and worry among families. Many white police officers have a preconceived and stereotypical ideation regarding people of color and sometimes lack the ability to learn what different family situations look like. The media has had some coverage regarding brutality and lack of diversity but there needs to be more and the world needs to start to see change.\
How important it is to actually have family support at bedside, in my experience, I don’t see a lot of bedside support especially with older folks or those who are from nursing homes, they don’t have the proper care team at bedside which will sometimes be difficult to get the point across in avoidance to more hospitalizations and promote health or strength.
I’m curious on the social worker follow-up after recent hospital visits, I know for us in the ED, we don’t follow up with patients unless they are being admitted but I do know how much education is given on referrals for specialists and as I mentioned because patients needing the most assistance are usually older folks, is there someone who gets sent to their house for more hands on teaching and learning, or do they just leave it as is and these referrals are completely ignored. I’m curious to know how much assistance is actually given to patients when needed and how insurance plays a role in that too when family members are either nonexistent or not present.
Family is the foundation of the health of the community. Patient health can be better managed when the family is encouraged to participate in care and decisions and visit as much as possible to participate in the treatment plan, medication administration, and discharge plan. Ensuring the family’s health is a commitment to society and the health system at large.

I strongly encourage that you do not wait until the very last minute to complete your assignments. Your assignments in weeks 4 and 5 require early planning as you would need to present a teaching plan and interview a community health provider. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses.
