Diversity refers to the great variety of human characteristcs-ways that we are different even as we are all human and share more similarities than differences These professions may be somewhat behind on diversity

Law enforcement agencies, including police departments and correctional facilities, have historically been criticized for their lack of diversity and inclusion. This lack of diversity can lead to biases and prejudices against certain groups, including those with non-traditional family structures. Additionally, many law enforcement policies and procedures are based on traditional nuclear family structures and may not accommodate the needs of individuals with non-traditional family arrangements.

Schools and educational institutions may also be behind on diversity and inclusivity, particularly when it comes to acknowledging the importance of how individuals define families. For example, some schools may not have policies in place to support children with same-sex parents or children who are being raised by their grandparents.

Corporate and Business: Some companies may not offer benefits to same-sex partners or may not have policies in place to accommodate employees who are caring for a non-traditional family member.

I think many professions lack diversity. I think there is also a stereotype in a lot of professions about what the employee would/should look like. Law enforcement specifically come to mind for me. Incidents in the world have shown how the lack of diversity among police officers has harmed so many families. People of color have to worry about themselves and their family members every time they leave the house. The constant fear and questions of “Will my family member make it home?”, “What happens if my family member is stopped by the police?” Will my family members or I be a victim of police brutality?” These questions leave a constant stress and worry among families. Many white police officers have a preconceived and stereotypical ideation regarding people of color and sometimes lack the ability to learn what different family situations look like. The media has had some coverage regarding brutality and lack of diversity but there needs to be more and the world needs to start to see change.

  1. What is the most important thing you are learning this week about families?

The importance of including families into the plan of care with patients. Family’s play a large part in the direction patients take when managing their illnesses. I really never considered how even something as simple as dietary adjustments need to be supported and implemented to have successful execution.

2.What important questions for you remain unanswered?

What strategies do nurses find successful in including families in the plan of care and discharge planning that prove overall successful once the patient is at home? Is there resources that prove more successful than others? Community support contact numbers?, printed resources?, including the “head of the household”?, are there any studies that exist that show success and specific steps to go through for effective family/patient teaching that yield successful disease management?

I am learning a better approach to questions during assessments. I feel like that has always been my weak point. I think the combination of being a task orientated person (like many other nurses) with what feels like overwhelming amount of tasks, I can get “rushed”. I must mentally remind myself to slow down and take the time. I appreciate the sample questions given in several of the assigned readings.

Overall, I feel I am not understanding the deep meaning of the family models. I feel like they are generalizations of the work already done by nurses. Which is great because that shows we are actively using them as a profession. It makes me think, did this model just become a visual of what was already being observed in the nursing profession? At times, it feels like the depth of these models, applies to more of a psychiatric and or community health specific arena of nursing. I can read and understand them but it also seems like coaching the obvious.

Family is the foundation of the health of the community. Patient health can be better managed when the family is encouraged to participate in care and decisions and visit as much as possible to participate in the treatment plan, medication administration, and discharge plan. Ensuring the family’s health is a commitment to society and the health system at large.

Health promotion strategies aim to enhance an individual’s well-being and prevent illness by addressing the social, economic, and environmental factors influencing health behavior (Oliveira et al., 2020). Various approaches to health promotion include education and awareness-raising, behavioral interventions, community engagement, policy and advocacy, and health communication. Health education programs may concentrate on different aspects of health, such as nutrition, physical activity, mental health, disease prevention, and management. These programs can be implemented in schools, churches, health clinics, workplaces, or community centers (Nutbeam et al., 2021).

Behavioral Interventions aim to encourage behavior change by adopting healthy habits. Such interventions include smoking cessation programs, weight management, physical activity programs, stress management, and alcohol and drug prevention. The strategy for success involves setting goals, monitoring progress, and providing incentives to reinforce healthy behaviors. Other methods may include collaboration with community leaders, organizations, and businesses to create policies and programs that promote health. Examples of community-based interventions involve increasing access to fresh produce, building bike lanes to promote active transportation, and organizing neighborhood walking groups (Stellefson et al., 2020).
