NRS-420 Topic 3 DQ 1

Every two years, the U.S. conducts a Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) detailing trends of youth risk behaviors occurring over the past 10 years. The most recent YRBS analysis describes several trends that are impacting the well-being of teens. Explore the link to the YRBS results provided in the topic Resources. After reviewing the data for your state, and based on the first letter of your first name, identify one trend and area of focus that is impacting teens:

A- D: Sexual behavior

E- H: Substance abuse

I-K: Experiencing violence

L-N: Mental health and suicidality

O-R: School connectedness

S-V: Parental monitoring

W-Z: Unstable housing

Identify factors influencing this trend. Discuss data that validates this trend as a concern for adolescents today. Illustrate the nurse’s role and specific actions that the nurse can take in addressing this area of concern in adolescents. Include specific support and informational resources the nurse can provide to parents or teenagers (such as website or contact information).

Initial discussion question posts should be a minimum of 200 words and include at least two references cited using APA format. There is evidence that social media is linked to mental health issues in teens. Constant exposure can lead to feeling inadequate, stressed and lonely. They are exposed to cyberbullying; it can disrupt their sleep leading which is so important for teens physical and mental development. It distracts them from doing what they are supposed to such as homework, activities and other responsibilities. It can affect the development of real-life social skills, and social media can affect their self-esteem and body image since everything is idealized online. It can have benefits as well such as getting them in touch with others that have things in common with them so they can see they are not alone and helping to boost their self-confidence. It can help develop social skills in teens who are introverted and may not normally interact with others. Social media is a free environment where they can interact without much hesitation (Gongala, 2024).

Parents need to make sure they are monitoring social media and are setting time limits for on their use and there are apps and phone settings that can help control screen time and what platforms they are allowed to get on. Parents need to also have discussions with their kids about what is expected and what is and is not appropriate (Teens and Social Media Use: What’s the Impact?, 2024). They need to be aware of online predators and the chance of being exploited and that not all is as it seems online.

Social media has become a popular tendency with recent generations. In other words, having social media has become the norm and is expected from adolescents causing the few who are unable to be categorized as weird or psychopaths. Therefore, the number of teens engaging in social media continues to grow creating a indirect social necessity. Sometimes, getting temporarily popular will encourage participation that could lead to having a spotlight or stress from needing to satisfy the followers. Another view of social media is an easy access to personal life or anything uploaded to the web that may not have been a great choice. Sometimes adolescents get carried away with fame and will attempt to please the public performing certain actions or delivering statements that did not necessarily represent their character leaving them exposed to judgment. Social media may have multiple benefits, yet incorrect use may lead to unwanted exposure followed by mental health concerns (Khalaf et al., 2023).

Social media has fundamentally altered how teens interact with the world, with both positive and negative consequences. On the one hand, it allows for greater connection, self-expression, and access to information. Yet, it also exposes teens to several risks. One significant concern is the impact on mental health. Studies have shown that excessive social media use can lead to increased feelings of anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, and body image issues (Ehmke, 2023) . The constant comparison with idealized lives and bodies online can create unrealistic expectations and contribute to feelings of inadequacy. Additionally, cyberbullying is rampant across social media platforms, negatively impacting teens’ emotional well-being. Social media makes teens particularly vulnerable to exploitation due to a combination of factors. Teens often seek validation and attention, which predators can manipulate. Additionally, teens might not fully understand the permanent nature of online actions or how their personal information could be misused. This makes them more likely to engage in risky behaviors like sharing intimate details, photos, or videos. Finally, online anonymity allows predators to create fake profiles and conceal their true intentions.

Social media is common today because almost every teenager has a technological device. Social media has made teens’ lives better by enabling them to access information easily. It also enables them to network and interact with different people. However, social media can also affect teenagers negatively by exposing them to cyberbullying. Teenagers can also be exposed to pornographic content on social media. Children, teenagers, and adults should have a healthy balance between social media use and other activities like hobbies, sports, and spending time with friends and family in person (Sümen & Evgin, 2021). This will prevent them from being addicted to social media. Social media makes teenagers vulnerable to exploitation because it makes them compare their lives with others.
