It is correct that it is very hard to be involved in conflict. This is terrible to say but I think nurses can sometimes be some of the hardest people to deal with at least that has been my experience in the last 30  years. There is so any types of conflict. One of my largest conflicts is relationship conflict. I have a co- worker who is very negative. She also likes to tell me that “I am too nice and I don’t know how to say no.” This really hurts my feelings  and makes me feel angry inside. I try to explain and justify my kindness  and I really do not feel like I should need to explain this all the time to someone who is not my boss. I am not a pushover and perhaps it would be better if  I confronted this by letting her know that it really bothers me when she says that because my kindness should not be taken as a pushover.

In addition, emotional intelligence seem to have a direct relationship with conflict resolution styles, while a negative relationship between emotional intelligence and the frequency of involvement in workplace conflicts is observed, (Skordoulis, et al., 2020). By using my emotional intelligence I need to a harness this into a bag of tools to better handle this situation.

Your experience with workplace conflict, particularly the challenging dynamics with a negative co-worker, reflects a common struggle many professionals face. It’s unfortunate when conflicts arise among colleagues, especially when dealing with comments that affect your emotional well-being. Addressing the issue by communicating your feelings and boundaries is a commendable approach. Clearly expressing that your kindness is not an indication of being a pushover is a crucial step in setting expectations and fostering a healthier work relationship.

The integration of emotional intelligence into conflict resolution is a valuable insight. Recognizing the impact of emotional intelligence on conflict resolution styles, as highlighted by Skordoulis et al. (2020), suggests that leveraging emotional intelligence can indeed be a powerful tool in handling workplace conflicts more effectively. By understanding and managing emotions, you can navigate interpersonal relationships with greater empathy and resilience.

Your commitment to using emotional intelligence as a tool for conflict resolution demonstrates a proactive and constructive approach. It aligns with the understanding that fostering emotional intelligence can contribute not only to personal well-being but also to creating a more positive and harmonious work environment. Keep harnessing your emotional intelligence, as it is an invaluable resource in navigating the complexities of workplace relationships and conflicts.

“Conflicts are inevitable when you work in a stressful environment like health care. Tension and stress can result from miscommunication and differing opinions and priorities.” (ANA, 2023). Because nursing in itself is already a stressful environment, there could be many triggers that cause workplace conflict. “Discord can stem from opposing personalities, biases, or perceptions, and internal or external stressors.” (ANA, 2023). Nursing environment and culture influences the way conflict is addressed because different workplaces have different approaches to addressing conflict. Some workplaces run by resolving conflict in a one-on-one manner, where the person one has a conflict with thety have to address it with them personally. Other workplaces have staff meetings to address conflicts and how the working staff as a whole can work together to create a positive workplace environment that minimizes problems or issues that may occur in the future. Other workplaces work off resolving conflict with one of the charge nurses where they help to mediate conflict between two individuals and seek out reconciliation. Although there are many strategies to address workplace conlict and to prevent violence, what seems to be the most effective would be collaboration or compromise. This is where “cooperating with the other party to understand their concerns and expressing your own concerns in an effort to find a mutually and completely satisfactory solution (win-win)” occurs (Walden University, 2022). Collaboration leads to problem solving and is a means to foster mutual respect for both parties and to honor each other’s perspective while seeking out what is best ultimately for qualilty patient care.
