I love this picture of a boss versus a leader! This illustration says so much. I responded to a post about how much I agree with participative leadership. I think allowing the group as a team to contribute ideas and solutions is far more effective than someone who stands at the forefront and just “bosses” people around or tells them what to do, expecting them to do it without any question. Collaborative or participative leadership allows the team to be heard and I believe it can actually make the outcome stronger. In this picture the ‘leader’ could not do this feat on their own but needs the help of their ‘team’. The ‘boss’ sits there expecting the team to do all the work. Who will go further, or be more successful? I would bet on the team with the leader. I mentioned the ‘two heads are better than one’ idea in someone’s post and I do believe that one can benefit from taking information and ideas from more than one source to execute and be successful with a plan. (Helbig, 2022).

Oh my! I just wrote that in my paragraph “I would not ask someone to do something I would not do myself!”  Then I started reading posts and read your reply! I love it! I have stood by that for years and still believe it now. I have seen so many charge nurse managers that I have no idea what they are asking some nurses to do or really think about it. If only we had more nurses who understood that basic nursing is ADL’s, it is not beneath you to take someone to the bathroom or put them on a bedpan. I started out as a CNA, and I once had a nurse go from room to room looking for me to take someone to the bathroom. I was so furious that I simply told her that the time it took you to look for me, you could have already done it. I have seen nurses sitting and playing on their phones while CNAs are running around answering call lights, and as a manager, I wouldn’t have it. We all play a part and work together. Nurses are considered leaders in the health care industry, and nursing is one of the most honest and ethical professions (Brenan, 2017). Leading and managing in nursing impact not only other staff members but also potentially every patient under the staff’s care. This cannot be any truer.

It’s wonderful to see your thoughtful reflection on the image and its alignment with the concepts discussed in the reading on Nursing Leadership & Management. I agree with your interpretation that the image effectively captures the essence of leadership and distinguishes it from a mere managerial role. The idea that leaders focus on interpersonal relationships while managers may concentrate on control and resource manipulation is a crucial distinction. This perspective aligns with contemporary leadership theories that emphasize the importance of collaboration, communication, and relationship-building.

Your observation that a leader is someone who works with others rather than controlling them resonates well with the evolving understanding of leadership as a collaborative and empowering process. Leaders inspire and guide their team members, fostering a sense of shared purpose and mutual support. In nursing, where teamwork and effective communication are essential, the emphasis on interpersonal relationships holds particular significance. The image, as you described, becomes a powerful representation of this idea, reinforcing the importance of collaboration and teamwork in achieving common goals.

Your insightful reflection not only demonstrates your understanding of leadership concepts but also showcases your ability to connect theoretical knowledge with practical visuals. Keep up the great work in applying these concepts to real-world scenarios, as it will undoubtedly contribute to your growth as a nursing professional
