The Topic 1 Resource, “The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education,” represents the core competencies of professional nursing education and provides a framework that nursing programs use to prepare professional nurses. The RN-BSN program at Grand Canyon University meets the requirements for clinical competencies as defined by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), using both direct and indirect care experiences for practicing nurses. In your practicum course, you will complete these hours with a preceptor and work to develop a change project.

Although we discussed different strategies that will help us to be successful including setting reminders, taking breaks and resting. How I will take care of myself through the stressful times. Since I have been in school during this past year. My life has changed dramatically, both personally and professionally. Since I now try to focus on a healthy lifestyle Because not doing that was taking a toll on me. I continue to strive to put more into my artistic outlets. I love to paint and to write poetry. These two things help me significantly with my mental health. I also belong to a support group that assists me with depression. I pray a lot. I read the Bible and I try to get out of myself. Self-care is how nurses promote their own physical and mental health. Effective self-care is any strategy practiced on a regular basis to prevent stress and anxiety and to enhance health and well-being. Self-care ranges from getting more rest to seeking professional help, (Kwon, 2023). Self-care is very important, and it is something that I need to keep striving for.

Recognizing the importance of self-care amidst a busy schedule, as emphasized by Stewart and DeNisco (2019), is integral to my approach for managing the demands of work, home life, volunteer activities, and school work. Their insights on the necessity of self-care and stress management for nursing students resonate deeply with me. In this context, setting aside time for personal well-being is not just beneficial; it’s essential for sustaining my mental and emotional health throughout my nursing education.

One personal strategy that aligns well with these principles is my commitment to journaling. This practice serves as a reflective tool, allowing me to decompress, organize my thoughts, and process my daily experiences. Additionally, the support of my boyfriend is invaluable. He provides an emotional outlet and a sounding board for my thoughts and feelings, offering the kind of support that can be hard to find in professional therapy due to cost and accessibility issues.

Incorporating these practices into my routine, I aim to create a balanced approach to manage stress and maintain resilience. By dedicating time to journaling and leaning on my support system, I am actively engaging in the kind of self-care that Stewart and DeNisco advocate as essential for nursing students.

Out of the 10 domains, I am most interested in learning about Informatics and Healthcare Technologies. Everyday technology is growing. Talking to nurses that have been nurses for 30+ years and discussing the evolution of technology intrigues me. I am a telemetry nurse. Like all nurses, we use a wide variety of technology for many different things. One important way is the telemetry monitors we have on our patients. These monitors continuously present the heart’s electrical rhythm on a screen revealing the rate along with wavelength (blah, blah). It is essential for all nurses at any level to master the use of technology while taking care of patients (AACN,2021). This is as little as understanding the electronic medication charting or knowing how to use the AED machine in emergent situations.

I believe to be a successful student; I must maintain self-care. I incorporate self-care through my own hobbies and personal life. I try my best to keep work at work. Once I leave the hospital, everything that has happened gets thrown out of my mind. Self-care to me is super important. It can be as simple as watching my favorite show with a face mask or going on a walk while it is beautiful outside. Doing something that is not as strenuous on my brain as nursing can be, makes me feel like I am giving my mentality a break. It is time for my brain to relax and enjoy the moment for myself, not others (Linton & Koonmen, 2020).
