The cities were all around the world and the number of infections just kept rising. In figure 1, one can see that the top five cities for infected cases were Jacksonville, Miami, Phoenix, Austin, and Houston. The top five cities together account for 1,463 cases of people infected by the dangerous virus. The Number of Infected Cases in Each City In figure 1, the bar graph depicts Jacksonville being the leading city with the most cases of individuals being infected with a dangerous virus, with their number being 322 cases. In addition to Jacksonville, Miami being the second leading city infected with a dangerous virus accounting for 299 cases. Phoenix is the third city infected with the most dangerous cases had only ten fewer cases than Miami, making their number 289. Austin having 281 cases, makes them the fourth leading city with the most infected individuals. Lastly, Houston having nine fewer cases than Austin, making their number 272 is the fifth leading city with the most infected cases. Prevalence Rate In addition to the number of infected cases in each city, knowing the prevalence rate is also imperative. Although I am not sure of the prevalence rate for the entire population due to the data collected not including that information. However, I was able to determine the prevalence rate for the top five cities with the most infected cases and their total prevalence rate. Jacksonville prevalence rate is 0.0032%, also being 322 per 100,000 people. Miami prevalence rate is 0.003, also being 299 per 100,000 people. Phoenix prevalence rate is 0.0029, also being 289 per 100,000 people. The total prevalence rate for all five cities is .1463, also being 1,463 per 100,000 people. Evaluating the Chart By evaluating the bar graph in figure 1, there is more that can be deducted. First and foremost, four out of five of the top cities with people infected with the dangerous disease is located in the southern part of the country with large populations. 17 cities have more than 100 people infected with a virus, with 25 cities having less than 50 people infected with the dangerous virus. Also, in figure 1, the number of people infected with the dangerous virus was high the first day it hit in April 2017, which was the 2nd. Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Diego, Denver, Portland, Louisville, Omaha, and Albuquerque accounted for 864 cases out of 4,852, meaning that almost 18% of the cases were just from April 2, 2017. The day with the most people infected by the dangerous virus was April 9th with 525 cases, accounting for almost 11% of the cases in April. The other cities combined for the other 71%, with no other day in April surpassing either date. These cities must do more to ensure the disease infecting hundreds throughout their community is in control, while others within the city have the tools needed to avoid being infected. It is evident that due to many individuals being infected within one month, it is pertinent that the cities comply with the World Health Organization International Health Regulations. To achieve compliance, “countries must be able to rapidly prevent, detect, and respond to public health threats. Most nations, however, remain unprepared to manage and control complex health emergencies, whether due to natural disasters, emerging infectious disease outbreaks, or the inadvertent or intentional release of highly pathogenic organisms” (Tappero et al, 2017, Pg. S5).
