Goals for the Short Term

 

As a Nurse Practitioner student, I have three short-term and long-term goals that will help me transition from RN to Nurse Practitioner Practice.

 

Short-term Objective:

 

My first short-term goal is to be prepared for this semester so that my preparation can help me meet my long-term goal of passing the Nurse Practitioner Board certification.

 

The second short-term goal is to learn the skill sets needed to serve the specific population with which I hope to work as a future Family nurse practitioner. As a family nurse practitioner student, one receives training for a wide range of ages: however, as a nurse, I mostly work with adults, and my long-term goal is to serve the same population as a nurse practitioner.

 

The third goal is to understand the legal implications, such as state laws that define nurse practice during this time period, so that when I apply for a job, I have a good understanding of the scope of practice that defines nurses’ roles, articulates oversight requirements, and governs practice and prescriptive authorities. As I previously stated, my first long-term goal is to obtain certification from the American Academy of Nurse Certification Program as soon as I finish my degree. This is something I have to keep in mind because accreditation can take weeks or months, so my goal is to begin the application process as soon as possible.

 

 

 

There is no denying that getting a good decent job is always the first thing that comes to mind when starting NP school. With this course, I’m almost done with my degree and certification, so my second goal is to get a decent job, which I’ve always wanted to do. I live in the Quad Cities, and the job market for Family Care Practitioners isn’t looking promising. However, I am fortunate to receive an offer from one of the preceptor offices. Although nothing has been confirmed, I am attempting to be very proactive in my job search by using social networking and job listing websites.

 

The third goal, which I will categorize as both long and short term, is to continue to update my knowledge and technological skills based on current evidence-based practice through a focus on continuing education so that I can provide based patient outcomes every time.

NURS 6565 Week 1: Example Essay on Short and Long-Term Professional Goals

 

Family nurse practitioner students (FNPS) must set realistic and professional goals in order to guide our careers and successfully transition from the role of registered nurses to advanced practice registered nurses (APRN). As new APRNs, we will be novices again, just as we were when we graduated from nursing school, and we must do everything possible to make the transition simple and uncomplicated. New APRNs may have unrealistic expectations, making the transition to their new role more difficult and increasing their anxiety (Poje, 2016) and risk of failure in their new profession. The goal of this paper is to identify at least three short-term and three long-term goals, explain why I chose them and how they relate to my professional career development, and create a strategic plan outlining how I intend to achieve each of those goals.

 

Three short-term and three long-term goals, why I chose them, and how they relate to my professional development

 

FNPS must develop goals that clearly define what they want to accomplish or learn, and they must be specific, measurable, achievable, appropriate, and time-limited (College of Nurses of Ontario [CNO], 2014). They must develop and ensure that their goals are focused, and they must present a clear idea of what they want to accomplish or master (CNO, 2014), which includes:

 

I must learn to identify various illnesses so that all patients are protected from harm by knowing the signs and symptoms, causes, and how to diagnose and manage their condition by the end of 2018, as measured by a lower number of misdiagnosis. I chose this goal because the majority of APRNs fresh out of school have so much to learn that is both necessary and related to the development of their professional career. Nurse practitioners (NP) must be knowledgeable in order to become excellent providers and provide safe, effective, and high-quality care to their patients (Flinter, 2012). If they do not have the necessary knowledge to perform their duties, they may lose their license and be unable to work in this profession again.

I need to learn to manage my time wisely so that I can do my job properly and get home on time by August 2018, as measured by having some free time after work to enjoy life. I chose this goal because many new APRNs I know struggle with time management. They go to work for about 8-12 hours per day and must stay over or go home to finish documenting on all of the clients they saw due to a lack of time during the office visit. If the problem persists for an extended period of time, the APRN’s stress level rises and their job satisfaction falls (Flinter, 2012), affecting their professional career development and making them want to quit their job.

I need to learn the necessary skills so that I can perform the necessary procedures and properly care for the patients by the end of 2018, as measured by the number of successful procedures. Because of their lack of experience, many APRNs have to review the clinic’s policies and procedures manual or look up information on the internet on a regular basis. Having the necessary skills can assist APRNs in becoming competent providers, which is associated with the development of a better professional career (Flinter, 2012). Clients will not return if the providers are incompetent, as this will have a negative impact on their career.

I must gain the confidence to educate patients so that they can and will learn everything they need to know about their medications and conditions by the end of 2020, as measured by not having to look up information all of the time. I chose this goal because it is critical that APRNs understand all of the different prescription drugs and disorders that affect people and can teach them how to avoid complications. When NPs are confident, patients will feel more at ease having them as primary care providers (Flinter, 2012), which is associated with professional advancement.

I intend to work hard in order to save money and be able to start my own business by the middle of 2022, as measured by my place of employment. I chose this goal because I want to one day own my own business, be able to help patients, and not have to be in such a rush to make money instead of taking care of clients, as most clinics are nowadays. The United States has a shortage of health care providers (Flinter, 2012) due to the challenges of the APRN’s occupation and dissatisfaction with the duties and responsibilities affecting professional advancement. Some things I disagree with, and by owning a business, some of those things can be changed or improved.

I must continue my education in order to obtain the doctor of nursing practice (DNP) degree by 2020, as measured by completion of the program and receipt of a certificate. I chose this goal because it is what I want to do in the future and I believe that it is attainable when people work hard to achieve their goals in life. The DNP will not pay me extra money for getting it in many places, but it will help me advance in my professional career and open new doors.

 

NURS 6565 Week 1 – Strategic Plan Outlining How I Plan to Achieve the Goals

 

One way to achieve all of those objectives is to develop a personalized plan to help me achieve them. The goals number one, two, three, four, and six, which are about learning, gaining skills and confidence, and obtaining the DNP, are all within a person’s reach and can be attained. APRNs must begin attending clinical case conferences or workshops, taking online or in-person classes, reading journal articles, completing online training courses, reviewing case studies, participating in a practice simulation, being mentored, and participating in webinars (Thabault, Mylott, & Patterson, 2015 and CNO, 2014). Working as a team with medical assistants, nurses, nurse practitioners, doctors, physician assistants, and shared personnel resources such as dieticians, managers, pharmacists, behavioralists, and diabetes educators is another (Flinter, 2012). Managing my time more effectively by becoming regimented with it, implementing productivity-boosting strategies (Perkel, 2015), keeping and redirecting patients to the task at hand, remaining focused, establishing a routine and making changes as needed, and not wasting time getting distracted.

 

Working hard, not wasting money on unnecessary items, buying only what I need, not going out as much to save money, eating at home and taking my lunch, and other measures can help me achieve my goal of owning my own business. Doing those few things works great and saves money because I am about to finish this program and become debt-free. APRNs make good money, but I’ve noticed that the more money people make, the more they spend, and this needs to change if the goal is to be met.

Short-term objectives

 

Short-term objectives include obtaining board certification, selecting a preferred patient population, and evaluating potential employers. According to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Human Resources, goals should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant to performance and professional development, and time-bound (Massachusetts Institute of Technology Human Recourses).

 

My first goal is to obtain board certification; however, state requirements vary greatly (Buppert, 2018). All states require Nurse Practitioners to be licensed Registered Nurses; I currently hold licenses in two states, Wisconsin and Illinois (Buppert, 2018). In Illinois, the RN must complete a master’s program and sit for an examination-based determination from the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program or the American Nurses Credentialing Center; in Wisconsin, the same is required (NursingLicensure.org). You must show proof of program completion before you can schedule an examination.

 

The second objective is to select a preferred patient population. As a family nurse practitioner, you are trained to care for people of all ages; however, my background is primarily in women’s health, so it would be tempting to accept a position in a gynecology office; however, is this something that would be desirable for me?

 

The third goal is to evaluate potential employers: when evaluating an organization, factors such as travel distance from home, benefits, hours available to work, expectations and support for new nurse practitioners are all important considerations. A lack of support and understanding of nurse practitioners’ scope of practice is a barrier to professional success (Freenstra, 2014). If the position was accepted into an organization that is new to having nurse practitioners, it may be more difficult to adjust to a new role as a provider.

 

Long-term Objectives

 

First, I’ll look for a job with a company that encourages my professional development, and then I’ll work on building relationships with patients and collaborating providers. Second, consider whether returning to school to pursue a doctorate degree is a viable option five years after completing an Advanced Degree Nurse.

 

Planning for the Future

 

As soon as I finish my degree, I will submit an online application to sit for the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Program examination. Accreditation can take several weeks to months to complete; the sooner an applicant begins gathering required forms and information, the better. Begin evaluating and applying to potential employers as soon as possible so that you have enough time to evaluate any offers before accepting. Before deciding to specialize with any population, consider all of the advantages and disadvantages of accepting positions in a specialty area versus a general practice area.

 

Short-term goals will be relatively easy to achieve, whereas long-term goals will require evaluation after a period of time adjusting to the new role as a Nurse Practitioner.
