This advocacy statement addresses the Medicare for All Act of 2019 that may also be referred to as H.R. 1384. The United States has

been experiencing increased cost of medication which has prevented many from receiving effective medical care. Many legislations have been enacted but none has achieved to solve the problem (Congress. Gove, 2020). The Affordable Care Act has made a significant improvement for the American healthcare system, however, the burden of medical cost is still felt by quite a number of American citizens. In order to remove the burden of medical costs from the citizens and improve equity in healthcare, this bill has been proposed to be the solution and long-awaited change.
Under President Donald Trump’s administration, the Medicare for All Act of 2019 was proposed. Pramila Jayapal a representative for Washington’s 7th congressional district presented this bill to the House on 27th February 2019 (Congress. Gove, 2020). The bill was referred to the committees and the first meeting about this bill happened on 10th Dec 2019, however, the bill has not been passed by the committee. This bill awaits to be passed by the Committee, the Congress, Senate, and then signed by the president. The proponents of the bill believe that if it is passed and signed into law by the president, the American citizens will enjoy cheap healthcare services which will improve access to medical services (Schulman & Milstein, 2019). This bill receives both strong support as well as opposition. The majority of the Americans are likely to support the bill because they are the ones experiencing the high cost of medical care. Democrats and some Republicans have shown their support for the Act (Johnson et al., 2020). However, opponents of this bill are majorly private insurance companies which have expressed the fear of being wiped off the system. Other congressmen have also stated that the bill is a great threat to private insurers. The question is, who is the most important between the American people and the insurance companies? Of course, American citizens are the most important (Holahan & Karpman, 2019). Furthermore, the Act does not prevent private insurers from performing their mandates, therefore, they should find better ways of attracting more people to their system.
Personally, I support the bill because it will improve the health of many Americans by reducing the cost of care. As a provider, I have encountered several cases where patients cannot afford medications due to high prices (Grim, 2019). People have died and some have disabilities because they could not afford efficient care due to the high cost of medications. Therefore, I strongly believe that this bill will solve this issue of high medical costs once for all.

In my opinion, the Affordable Care Act (H.R. 3962) is good since it offers an opportunity to get affordable, comprehensive health coverage and encourages high-quality care to patients regardless of their financial status. Notably, a huge difference is identified from the previous years before the approval of the Affordable Care Act in 2010. For instance, approximately 48 million Americans would incur a high cost of health coverage due to a lack of affordable health insurance (Collins et al., 2017). The high cost of health care directly impacts family shares of employer-based coverage, consumers, and business whereby the Affordable Care Act has helped solve the problem. Additionally, the Affordable care act has supported research by helping in tracking key health measures which reduce the disparities in health insurance coverage. 

The Affordable Care Act opponents suggested that the bill eliminated the individual mandate by requiring the residents to pay a penalty or have health insurance, thus that more people entered the insurance market. I would address the issue that the penalty, inform of tax, is a way of setting discipline to the residents and encourage them to have health insurance cover for easy access to high and quality services (Galvani et al., 2020). For instance, by eliminating the penalty, an increase in the insurance premium will rise, limiting healthy people from securing insurance cover (Laureate Education, 2018). Additionally, the affordable care act bill helped expand Medicaid eligibility beyond families, thus raising the income threshold since it included low-income adults. Therefore, most people who gained health care coverage after the passage of the Affordable Care Act also get enrolled in Medicaid, thus proving its popularity.
