Knowledge and information are at the center of my organization’s core values. I currently work for Mayo Clinic, and their logo displays the three shields representing clinical practice, research, and education. The organization is centered around pushing new knowledge and innovation and disseminating it in clinical practice. Keeping these three priorities and the center of how the organization provides care inspires staff to be a part of the change and continue to learn. Mayo Clinic promotes change and inspires to innovate and lead best practices in the healthcare field. In the department of nursing, Mayo Clinic has provided a structure through committees to facilitate change, coordinate funds, and provide resources to support the sharing of new knowledge. This structure helps provides resources and networking opportunities to effectively share information with a large department of nurses across multiple sites. Even though Mayo Clinic is leading in research, there are always ways to improve how information and knowledge are shared. Due to the vast amount of resources available, it can be overwhelming and not clear where to find information. I think something that would help navigate the many sites, policies, and groups at Mayo Clinic is if they developed an AI bot that can help guide to resources. AI bots are available on many shopping websites and help navigate information more efficiently.

I work for Presbyterian Healthcare Systems who utilize EPIC. It is used across all of their healthcare settings except in the Health plan. They also share access with outside providers, facilities and agencies to increase efficiency in shared patient information. Patients are encouraged to use MyChart which is part of EPIC patients are able to see some of the documentation from providers, nurses and other healthcare professionals and send messages. In terms of education and updated innovation there is a separate site for nurses and one for physicians to get evidence-based practice information as well as other educational information. Innovation is encouraged and can be shared within meetings and in a larger forum. Depending on a unit’s leadership information is not shared as quickly in terms of upcoming changes, change models and so on. In our department of case management, we were informed in a team hall meeting last week we were told that our model of care was changing that will impact our caseload and will take effect January 1, 2023. There was not opportunity to voice discussion or get in writing how the model would be rolled out.

The need for information significantly impacts workers’ interaction within the organization. First, it influences how professionals produce and leverage information in the workplace. Providers often rely on electronic record health systems to access patient information, which they can use in treatment, research, and enhancing healthcare outcomes. Professionals in my organizations also leverage collaborations where they engage their expertise and experience to develop critical healthcare information. Besides, the need for information enhance the innovative nature of the organization’s team. They engage in research to stay up to date with the changes and innovations in the healthcare sector.

Health information technology (Health IT) may improve the organization’s collection and exchange of information and knowledge. According to Rouleau et al. (2017), information and communication technologies (ICTs) embody all digital technologies that support the electronic capture, storage, processing, and exchange of information and knowledge to promote health, prevent illness, treat disease, and manage chronic illness. The technologies leveraged must be interoperable to allow swift communication between different departments and healthcare information. Informatics can help healthcare providers increase access to safe, quality care by providing strategies for more efficient and cost-effective treatments. Informatics tools like electronic health records (EHRs), telehealth systems, and decision support systems are helping healthcare providers share information quickly, coordinate care across settings, reduce errors, and monitor patient outcomes (Brown et al., 2022). Additionally, informatics can help to provide quality care in remote and underserved areas by enabling healthcare providers to use technology to access patient information more quickly. Informatics can also help healthcare providers overcome barriers related to cost by reducing duplication of services and helping develop strategies for improving workflow efficiency.

Informatics helps healthcare overcome emerging barriers to care by providing tools that efficiently deliver safe and quality patient care. One such tool is Clinical Provider Order Entry (CPOE). This system allows clinicians to electronically enter orders for medications, tests, procedures, and other forms of treatment directly into a patient’s medical record, eliminating potential errors from handwritten orders and improving the accuracy of patient records (Aldhoayan et al., 2022). Another tool that can help healthcare providers in clinical decision support systems (CDSS). This system uses data from the patient’s medical record, such as laboratory test results and vital signs, to generate recommendations for diagnosis and treatment (Aldhoayan et al., 2022). This helps clinicians make more informed decisions about the care of their patients, reducing medical errors and improving the quality of care.

With the use of electronic medical records (EMR’s) there has been such a drastic change for healthcare. When this began transitioning from paper documentation, paper orders and so on a shift began to happen. In part because the information was easier to obtain but multiple people could see that documentation in real time versus hours or days and mindsets began to shift as well. Fast forward to today and the need to improve systems to reduce error and improve patient safety and health. Hamade, Terry & Malvankar-Mehta (2019) discuss that this has improved in the last 50 years by complete and safe documentation of patient information, improved coordination of care, reduction in errors and more involvement of patients. As a care manager having the ability to find all of the necessary information to coordinate care for a variety of reasons (Home IV’s, wound vacs, transfers, etc.) it is imperative that the information be up to date and accurate in order to obtain post hospital care that is appropriate for the patient.

There are a few ways that informatics can help overcome barriers. The first is when patients are being checked in regardless of the location that it is seamless from start to finish. In other words, how patients’ information is taken, that information is kept safe and when that patient transitions from one area to the next the information is shared equally across the interprofessional team. The second is that technology is available to the interprofessional team that meets their needs such as laptops, tablets, phones etc. so that their care meets the needs of the patient for safe and quality care as well as connected to the overall main system. Clinical provider order entry (CPOE) and clinical decision support systems (CDSS) can help alert providers with things like drug-drug interaction but as n.d. (2019) states to many alerts can lead to user fatigue and choose to ignore the alerts, leave them unread.  Heuristic principles are important because implementing new systems should be tailored to the user’s way of working. When it is tailored to the users there is increased efficiency and patient safety. Akhoulfi, H. et al. (2019) reviewed use of antibiotic treatment and implementation of CDSS and CPOE systems and concluded that it is also important to provide to the user’s information is to be clear, concise and specific to avoid as much confusion as possible.
