Topic 6 DQ 1

Review the evidence-based practice project ideas you described in Topic 5 DQ 1. Based on your initial ideas, what types of scholarly nursing research (such as quantitative or qualitative research, peer-reviewed resources, etc.) would be required to further investigate the issue? Select an article related to your topic. Identify the criteria you would use based on the CRAAP test to evaluate the appropriateness of the research. Why is it important to select research that meets these criteria? Evaluate the “CRAAP Test” article from the New Jersey Institute of Technology Library, located in the topic Resources. Explain the five criteria as they relate to your selected article.

As we are now more than halfway done with the course, I wanted to make sure everyone feels on track. I would encourage everyone to partake in a “quick check” so I can further assess and evaluate how you are doing. Please know that your response is not mandatory, but substantive responses do count for participation credit. Please take some time to consider the following:

  • What has been your biggest challenge so far in this course?
  • Do you have any unanswered questions?
  • What could I do to help address any concerns or questions?

I look forward to reading your responses.

I cannot believe we are more than halfway done with the course, it seems like only yesterday we started. On my part, the journey has so far been a smooth one. I haven’t experienced any challenge related to the course. Perhaps the only concern is on the requirement to use resources published within the last five years. In the process of completing the assignments, I often come across resourceful publications but cannot use them due to the time constraint. Even though some were published within the last 10 years, I have to disregard them and use the current ones. Other than that, I am at ease with other aspects of the course.

I think the biggest challenge for me in this course is adapting to online learning. I am both an auditory and visual learner but having plenty of resources helps me with the online learning environment and it has been easy to navigate what I need. You have been helpful and a great resource to all of us. I thought having courses online would be tough and would not have anyone to guide us but it has been smooth sailing since week 1. Another challenging aspect of this course is writing papers in APA format and doing my best to avoid plagiarism. This course is good practice and learning a lot about paper writing. So far, I have no questions in mind and I know I can easily message you for anything that will come up.

I cannot believe how fast this class has progressed and that it is more than halfway done. I feel good about how it is going. I was a little nervous after receiving my grade for one of the earlier assignments that I had done incorrectly. I read the instructions multiple times because I wanted to make sure I understood them, but I should have asked for clarification to my questions for that assignment. I am doing well as the class has progressed. I was again nervous about last week’s paper assignment, but I did well.

I would say my biggest challenge in this class is still time management, juggling working full time and family. More specifically, I am struggling with writing a stronger thesis statement and improving on references. I feel it takes me a long time to toggle between the APA guide, my assignment, and my sources to cite everything correctly, but I think it is because I am not used to doing it. I think my speed will improve as I continue my journey for my MSN.

I appreciate your feedback for assignments. Could you recommend resources on how to write a better thesis statement? For the last assignment, I had referred to OWL regarding thesis statements.

Thank you.

I would suggest using the Writing Center in the Student Success Center.

It is hard to believe that we are nearing the end of our first class. I have learned so much information so far, and I cannot wait to continue this journey. My biggest challenge so far has been time management. Throughout the first couple weeks of this class, I found it difficult to balance work, school, and social life. Luckily, I have grown from this and have become much more organized. The biggest challenge I have had with the content is APA formatting. I struggled with formatting in the beginning of this class, but I have gained a generalized understanding. I now feel confident with my APA formatting. At this point, I do not have any questions. I feel like this class has been very organized and easy to follow. I believe you have done a great job at answering questions, directing us to resources, and providing us with feedback. There is nothing that I can think of that you could be doing better. Thank you so much for all of the time and effort that you have put into this class. You have made this a great experience for me so far.

I cannot believe less than three weeks to go. My biggest challenge is time management between work, school, and family. The last four weeks’ work schedule was not working well for me, we are so short on the floor, and I have to stay over. Multiple times, I thought I wouldn’t make it through this course by turning in my assignment timely. Now I know the school schedule, and I can make it better for the following program by giving myself a day off for studies and saying no to overtime.

Academically, I was concerned about the APA format for my last papers, so I read all the past papers’ feedback and appreciated that you answered all my simple questions. It helps me avoid the same mistake from the past. Also, it was worth it to attend the APA 7th edition webinars from the GCU library. It was very confusing initially for the citation, but now I am happy to see myself not making the same mistake on the last papers.

So far, the course has been interesting. I am excited to be learning about various issues associated with advanced nursing practice. From the class content and activities, I would not site any challenges. The course is appropriately structured. The DQs, responses, and assignments are an excellent way to gauge our understanding. However, I have had a small challenge balancing school and other life activities. I have to dedicate time from my rest hours to go through the content and finish up my assignments and responses. Reading the course materials and making several responses weekly is quite a task. But don’t we all need to sacrifice something for a better future? I am happy to be working hard with the hopes of achieving my dreams as a clinical nurse leader. I am doing my best to grasp a lot from the class and maintain a good score.

I also have no unanswered questions. However, in case of any concerns, I will not hesitate to ask for help. Also, to address concerns and issues, I believe it would occur at the individual level, especially since there is currently no problem cutting across anyone. I am grateful that I am very comfortable and excited to finish up the remaining parts of the course. I hope to do better in the remaining parts of the course. I feel like I am on track, and I hope my final grade will prove that. I also wish everyone the best and encourage all to share their problems and receive the help that could help them turn their grades around.

Graduate school has been an incredible journey so far. On my end, I need to be more mindful of my time. I have to give our assignments, especially the high points one, an excellent thought to ensure I submit substantial work. APA formatting is still a concern for me and a lot of times I feel I’m doing it wrong. I already said this before, but sometimes I am overwhelmed by my work, life, and school balance, but I thank God because He always makes things possible for me. I am grateful to GCU for this opportunity to advance my education, to my classmates who had been very inspirational, and to our professor for helping us out. Thank you.

The topic selected for the evidence-based practice project entails differentiating deep tissue injuries (DTIs) from other skin injuries within our in-patient population. DTIs are a concern as it presents the greatest challenge due to the propensity for deterioration to costly, life-altering, full thickness tissue wounds, even with optimal care Sullivan (2022, as cited in EPUAP et al., 2019). DTPIs are challenging in differentiating from other skin injuries such as purpura, hematoma, stage 2 pressure injures and bruises. For this evidence-based project peer review will be utilized. Peer reviews are considered a key mechanism to ensure quality and safety in health care systems (Kaehne et al., 2019). They involve direct (face to face) or indirect (remote) review of services through the analysis of routinely collected data, review of self-reports, and/or observations of care practices (Kaehne et al., 2019).

The article chosen is titled DifferentiatingDeep Tissue Pressure Injury (DTPI) From Other Causes of Purpura in the Sacrococcygeal Area: A Multiple Case Series.

Currency: The copyright year of this article is 2019, which is current for my evidence-based practice project.

Relevance:  Differentiating deep tissue injury from other skin injuries within our in-patient population is a concern because if a diagnosis of the skin injury is mislabeled, patient will receive recommendations of prevention and management that will not be effective. Furthermore, mislabeling may result in falsely elevated hospital-acquired pressure injury prevalence rates, inaccurate data used as a basis for quality improvement projects (Solmos et al., 2019). With that said, information within the article is applicable to my evidence-based project because on multiple case series of differentiating deep tissue injury from other causes of purpura in sacrococcygeal area it focuses. Purpura is one of several skin injuries that is difficult to differentiate from deep tissue injury. Purprua is visible hemorrhage into the skin, appears purple and is non blanched upon application of external pressure (Solmos et al., 2019).

The audience for this journal article includes health care professionals that specialize in wound, ostomy, and continence care, including nurses, physicians, physical therapists, and other health care providers (Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse Society, 2024). I would quote/reference information from this article in my project because it is from a reliable source.

Authority: The article was reviewed and published in the Journal of Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing. This is the official journal of the Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurse Society which collaborates closely with The Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Certification Board (WOCNCB). The Journal’s mission is to publish current, best evidence and original research to guide the delivery of expert health care (Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses Society, 2024). This study was reviewed and approved by the University of Chicago Institutional review board (IRB); approval no. IRB17-0457 (Solmos et al., 2019).

The authors consist of physicians and nurses with advanced degrees with certification in wound, ostomy, and continence, which makes them experts in the content of this article. They are affiliated with the University of Chicago Medicine. The primary author’s contact information is provided, and no conflict of interest was reported in this article.

Accuracy: The article is peer reviewed, evidence based and cited correctly. The authors cited articles with similar perspectives. The content is well organized and provides an abstract, background information, purpose of study, method, discussion section that contains limitations of the study and conclusion. The tone of this article is professional language.

Purpose: The purpose of the article is to educate and inform, on three case series of differentiating deep tissue injury from other causes of purpura in sacrococcygeal area. The intended audience for this journal article includes health care professionals that specialize in wound, ostomy, and continence care, including nurses, physicians, physical therapists, and other health care providers (WOCN, 2024). The authors reported there were no conflicts of interest.

The conclusion presented in this article is that the interdisciplinary approach adopted was useful in determining the cause of purpura when the DTPI was ruled out by the certified wound care nurse (Solmos et al., 2019).

A Sample Answer 5 For the Assignment: Identify the criteria you would use based on the CRAAP test to evaluate the appropriateness of the research NUR 513

Title: Identify the criteria you would use based on the CRAAP test to evaluate the appropriateness of the research NUR 513

The evidence-based practice project idea that I described in Topic 5 is the concern for burnout, stress, and emotional exhaustion within the field of nursing and for nurse educators. Based on my initial ideas, it will be necessary to conduct literature reviews, and collect both quantitative and qualitative studies for this inquiry.

For this topic, I have selected an article that is an integrative review focusing on the avoidance of burnout and the welfare of nurse educators (Lovern et al., 2023). Applying the CRAAP Test from the New Jersey Institute of Technology Library, I have analyzed the article for its reliability, usefulness, and appropriateness as it relates to this research topic.

Currency: The article became available online October 10, 2023 and is current to the topic.

Relevance: The information within this article is relevant to my topic of burnout among nurse educators and highlights stressors that contribute to fatigue and how to prevent it. The audience for this article includes experts and scholars and I would quote and reference information from this source in my project.

Authority: This article was published in the journal Teaching and Learning in Nursing which is the official journal of the Organization for Associate Degree Nursing. All the authors have advanced nursing degrees which make them specialists for the topic and the article’s main author has linked contact information. Within the article there is a declaration that funding was not provided for the creation of the work.

Accuracy: This article is well researched and provides sufficient evidence of the topic because it includes a background or purpose for the study, research methods and limitations of their data. Professional language is used in the article, it is organized, and it documents sources in a bibliography as cited in the discussion.

Purpose: The article was written with the purpose to inform and teach about the importance of burnout and how to prevent it as it relates to educators within nursing. The main author Allan Lovern is currently a professor of nursing at the University of Southern Mississippi which makes him an expert in the field, and could potentially bias him to the topic of burnout.
