This increase is particularly prominent among women. AF is responsible for approximately 15% of strokes in the general population and 36% of strokes in individuals aged 80 and older. The potential for severe health consequences like stroke underscores the urgency and cost associated with addressing AF on multiple fronts.

The exact cause of AF can vary, but common factors include increasing age, hypertension, heart diseases/conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart valve problems, congestive heart failure, or a history of heart attacks. Thyroid problems, obesity and other chronic conditions like diabetes, sleep apnea, and chronic kidney disease. Additionally, alcohol and substance abuse can trigger AF. Lastly, family history can be a large contributor for developing AF.
