HIM 217 Week 5 Assignment Replacing an Electronic Health Record System
Prior to beginning work on this assignment, review Chapter 13 in Exploring Electronic Health Records, and read Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ 2019 Program Requirements Medicare (Links to an external site.), and the Health IT Playbook Section 1: Electronic Health Records (Links to an external site.) web pages. Additionally, read or review the following articles: The Seven Phases of the System-Development Life Cycle (Links to an external site.), Best Practices for Patient Portals: The Key is Convincing Patients to Embrace Practice Portals, and Why Physicians Switch Electronic Health Record Vendors.
Read the following scenario and prepare a PowerPoint presentation with detailed speaker notes or a narrated PowerPoint with a transcript. You may want to review the How to Make a PowerPoint Presentation (Links to an external site.) web page to get started.
Scenario:
Sunnydale Family Practice includes four physicians, two Nurse Practitioners, three LPNs, one RN, two receptionists, three coder or billers, and a practice manager. The providers and support staff are unhappy with the set-up and technical support of their current electronic health record system. As the practice manager, you are preparing a presentation to convince the group practice the system should be replaced.
In your PowerPoint presentation:
Identify and explain three key reasons current practices are replacing their current electronic health record system.
Discuss the current improved operability goals.
Identify the seven phases of the system-development life cycle. Note: This is the system-development life cycle (SDLC), not a software life cycle.
Explain the role of the following internal stakeholders of the project (a stakeholder is an individual who may affect or who may be affected by the new system):
The provider (doctor and nurse practitioner)
The practice manager
The biller or coders
The clinical support staff (the LPNs)
Describe why the replacement system should meet the current Health IT Certification criteria.
Explain the current Medicare program requirements for improved operability, as defined by Medicare.
Create a communication plan for the conversion from the current system to the proposed system (who, what, when, where, and how).
Develop a template for just-in-time training for implementation of the new system. Include in your plan who does what, when and how.
