Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to recognize your own feelings as well as the feelings of others. (Whitney, 2018) There are five elements of EI that has been shown to be beneficial for leaders. These elements include self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills. according to the article Emotional intelligence: a Critical Leadership Quality for the Nurse Executive, “Lack of EI can derail the career of even the most experienced nurse executive. A nurse executive who has strong EI can demonstrate vision- or goal-based decisions in contrast to allowing her emotions to rule her decisions” (Stichler, 2006).

One of the elements, self-awareness, is important to be able to understand your own emotions and how they might affect others. Self-awareness is also a quality that is known to strengthen leadership. (Whitney, 2018) Characteristics of self-awareness include self-confidence, emotional self-awareness, and accurate self-assessment. (Whitney, 2018) An example of self-awareness is a nurse being aware of their feelings about certain things, such as culture or religion, and understanding their patients feelings about culture or religion and not allowing their feelings interfere with the way they interact with their patients.

According to Stichler, there are 4 steps that you can take to improve your EI. The first step is to improve your self-awareness which can be done through the observation and identification of your emotions as well as others. The second step is to improve self-management “by analyzing situations after the fact and identifying the feelings or emotions that were underlying a specific reactions or response” (Stichler, 2006). Step three is to build social awareness. Building social awareness can be done by understanding your emotions as well as your reactions and behaviors when it comes to cultural norms within your organization. (Stichler, 2006) Lastly, step four is to analyze and manage relationships. Relationships is a major component of management and is important to have good relationships among those you work with.

EI has five elements that has been proven to be of great essence to leaders. Among these elements are self-awareness, self-management, social skills, empathy, and motivation. I agree with your post. A leader that can master emotional intelligence needs to also be good with professional relationships and collaboration. Interprofessional and Intraprofessional is an important type of communication that needs to be upheld by nursing leaders so they can confidently talk to their own colleagues and doctors alike (Whitney, 2018). This will lead to a shared vision so that all of the group can have the same goals for the organization (Whitney, 2018).

An emotionally intelligent leader is therefore one who has the ability to guarantee the ultimate success of any given team. Within the context on leading and managing groups, leaders who possess high degrees of self-awareness would have exemplary behaviors that has a mix of empathy and a nurturing nature that creates a conducive working environment which thus boosts productivity.

It goes without a doubt that self-aware individuals understands precisely that which makes them feel valuable and appreciated and thus are able to transmit those feelings to the rest of the team members.
