What is an interaction? Describe an example and identify the variables within your population (work, social, academic, etc.) for which you might expect interactions?
Research refers to an organized analysis involving research development, testing, and evaluation of design to determine comprehensive knowledge. Nevertheless, quality improvement on the other hand entails a logic process that is spearheaded by multiple activities that are aimed at creating positive change and bring immediate changes in health care delivery system. In similar, both quality improvements and research play a critical role in health care since they ensure there exists a constant improvement on patient’s outcome (Carter, Mastro, Vose, Rivera & amp; amp; Larson, 2017). In contrast, research and quality improvement involve different aspects as discussed below. Research is more focused on developing general knowledge while quality improvement implements the already established general knowledge. Knowledge seeking in research rely on targets and routine care to test hypothesis whereas in quality improvement knowledge seeking is purely a constant process.
QI is also flexible, adaptive and iterative process while research is a continuous process. Besides research statistically proves, analyzes and disapprove hypothesis while quality improvement simply compares processes and systems in health care before implementing (Vindrola-Padros, Pape, Utley &amp; amp; amp; amp; Fulop, 2017). In healthcare, use of mixed methods has helped in improving patients outcomes since qualitative data is used to explain quantitative findings. In our hospital, we use qualitative data to examine personal experiences and collect data from survey instruments in order to calculate quality of care.

Qualitative research is designed to identify the thoughts and experiences of individuals being studied in relation to a specific query. These findings are sorted, analyzed, and presented to identify commonalities among members of the study group. In health care setting, qualitative research can aim to identify what matters most to patients and how their experiences can be improved. Qualitative research collects the perspectives of individuals and seeks to draw conclusions from sample group being studied. Qualitative data collection methods include interviews, focus groups and observation. Interviews allow the patients, families, and partners to provide detailed information about their experiences (Saul, 2019).

Research is used for the purpose of finding out new details, effects, and results of something. In the healthcare field, research is done to find out how a medicine works, the effectiveness of a procedure or polity, why tests are done, or new information about medical data. Quality improvement is research done with the goal of taking something that needs worked on and improving it (Vindrola-Padros et al., 2017). If a facility has high rates of falls, they investigate ways to improve safety and prevent falls for the purpose of quality improvement. For health care, data collection for quality can be done without acquiring approval or consent, which is required for research studies.

Sometimes it is challenging to determine whether an activity is a research or quality improvement. Federal regulations require human subject research to be reviewed and approved by the IRB. However, quality improvement research does not require IRB oversight. Some QI activities may also research and may need IRB approval. QI process involves evaluation and learning from experience while research involves testing, evaluation, development, and contribution to generalizable knowledge (Carter et al. 2017). With research, the organization conducting the study may or may not receive a direct benefit. Organizations typically undertake research hoping to help other individuals or groups in the future, as opposed to receiving a direct benefit for themselves.
