Title: DNP 815 Assignment Case Report: Application of Theory

Application of Theory to Practice (Peplau’s Interpersonal Relations Theory)

Effective communication is important for the realization of optimum care outcomes in nursing practice. Nursing theories such as the theory of interpersonal relations by Hildegard Peplau provide nurses with crucial insights into the approaches to establishing therapeutic relationships with their patients. Organizations often utilize patient experiences with the care process to assess their services’ quality, safety, and efficiency. Nurses and other healthcare providers should be competent in translating theoretical concepts into their practice. Therefore, this paper examines the application of Peplau’s theory of interpersonal relations into practice, definitions of therapeutic relationships, and application in my future practice.

Application of Peplau’s Theory in Nursing Practice

Peplau developed the theory of interpersonal relations. The theory focuses on the impact of nurse-patient relationships on patient and care outcomes. According to Peplau, nurses should aim at establishing a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship to achieve the desired care outcomes. Peplau’s theory identified the phases of the nurse-patient relationship that apply to nursing practice. They include orientation, working, and termination. The orientation phase is the first stage of the nurse-patient relationship. This phase encompasses activities such as active listening, establishing trust, needs identification, prioritization, and respect for patients, which apply to nursing practice (Chrostek et al., 2023). Nurses must create a rapport, obtain subjective and objective data, and establish a treatment plan in this phase to facilitate patient-centered outcomes in disease management.

Nurses also incorporate interventions of the working phase of the interpersonal relations theory into their practice. Nurses apply interventions from the working phase such as active listening, seeking information about the client’s problem, assessment, counseling, health education, and shared decision-making in their practice. The interventions enable the nurse to understand the patient’s needs better and involve them in exploring strategies that would facilitate the recovery process. Nurses also incorporate therapeutic communication skills such as the use of non-verbal and verbal strategies to support their patients and be increasingly aware of their patient’s needs (Chrostek et al., 2023). They also provide patients with open-minded, reflective feedback to facilitate the development of patient-centered plans.

The termination phase is the last stage of interpersonal relations in Peplau’s theory. Patients terminating themselves from identification with the nurse characterize the termination phase. Nurses incorporate various strategies from Peplau’s theory into their practice during this phase. For example, nurses encourage patients to reflect on their experiences with the care process, goals, and strategies implemented to achieve them. They also educate patients on the different health promotion and disease prevention strategies that should be adopted for optimum outcomes (Lee & Son, 2022). The nurse assists patients in making their plans and sustainability strategies for disease prevention and optimum health and well-being.

Defining the Concept of Therapeutic Relationships in Practice

The concept of therapeutic relationships is central to the theory of interpersonal relations by Hildegard Peplau. This concept can be operationally defined as the client-nurse relationship that entails the creation and sharing of mutual feelings and attitudes between the client and the nurse. The definition recognizes the need for the nurse to collaborate with their patients to identify prioritized needs, identify shared goals, and strategies that should be implemented to achieve the goals. The definition shows that wrong attitudes and feelings will hinder the realization of the desired goals. This is because feelings and attitudes affect behaviors. They also affect the sustainability of the potential strategies that can be used to achieve the desired outcomes in the case process (Mersha et al., 2023). Therefore, nurses and other healthcare providers must ensure the creation of the right attitudes and feelings that will promote behavioral change among the patients.

Use of Theoretical and Operational Definitions of Therapeutic Relationships in My Future Practice

The theoretical definition of therapeutic relationships according to Peplau is that it refers to the relationship between a sick person and the healthcare provider such as a nurse, who has been trained to identify and implement interventions that would address the health need. The theoretical definition recognizes the need for specialized knowledge and skills in nursing for nurses to be able to respond to and address their patients’ needs (Chrostek et al., 2023). Operational and theoretical definitions agree on the importance of the nurse and patient working together to address the identified healthcare needs.

I will use the theoretical and operational definitions of therapeutic relationships in my future nursing practice in various ways. First, I will use the theoretical definition of therapeutic relationships to identify my specialized knowledge and skills that must be used to address the unique needs of the patients I care for in my practice. For example, I will use my knowledge of nursing science and theoretical concepts from Peplau’s theory to explore the patient’s needs, prioritize them, and collaborate with the patient in addressing them (Lee & Son, 2022). Further, I will use the operational definition to ensure that my clients have positive attitudes and feelings towards the management of their health problems for sustainable outcomes.

Potential Research Question

The potential research question that can be explored in nursing based on the above prepositions is as follows: What is the impact of therapeutic relationships based on Hildegard Peplau’s mode on care outcomes among patients diagnosed with end-stage renal disease?

Conclusion

In conclusion, Peplau’s model of interpersonal relationships applies to nursing practice. The theoretical and operational definitions of therapeutic relationships apply to my future nursing practice. I will use Peplau’s theory of interpersonal relations to create positive relationships with my patients and empower them to take responsibility for meeting their health needs.

I advise you look at the requirements for these assignments at the beginning of the course and plan accordingly. I have posted the YouTube link that explains all the class assignments in detail. It is required that you watch this 32-minute video as the assignments from week 3 through 5 require that you follow the instructions to the letter to succeed. Failure to complete these assignments according to instructions might lead to a zero. After watching the video, please schedule a one-on-one with me to discuss your topic for your project by the second week of class. Use this link to schedule a 15-minute session. Please, call me at the time of your appointment on my number. Please note that I will NOT call you.

Plagiarism is highly prohibited. Please ensure you are citing your sources correctly using APA 7th edition. All assignments including discussion posts should be formatted in APA with the appropriate spacing, font, margin, and indents. Any papers not well formatted would be returned back to you, hence, I advise you review APA formatting style. I have attached a sample paper in APA format and will also post sample discussion responses in subsequent announcements.

Your initial discussion post should be a minimum of 200 words and response posts should be a minimum of 150 words. Be advised that I grade based on quality and not necessarily the number of words you post. A minimum of TWO references should be used for your initial post. For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses. There are TWO discussion questions each week, hence, you need a total minimum of SIX discussion posts for each week. I usually post a discussion question each week. You could also respond to these as it would count towards your required SIX discussion posts for the week.

I understand this is a lot of information to cover in 5 weeks, however, the Bible says in Philippians 4:13 that we can do all things through Christ that strengthens us. Even in times like this, we are encouraged by God’s word that we have that ability in us to succeed with His strength. I pray that each and every one of you receives strength for this course and life generally as we navigate through this pandemic that is shaking our world today. Relax and enjoy the course!
