I enjoyed reading your discussion post in risk perception. Patient education would be more effective if it were individualized based on a patient’s health history. I agree that a woman’s pregnancy history influences her perception of her health and the risk of future pregnancies. Women who had healthy pregnancies and labor will have different risk perceptions from women who had complications. Taking past medical and obstetric history can guide midwives on the level of health education that should be offered to a pregnant woman. Besides, a woman who perceives her pregnancy as risky, health education should be tailored to address her concerns and prevent the occurrence of complications in the current and future pregnancy.

Risk perception also applies to the general public as people have different perceptions of their health based on previous experiences of ill health or people with the disease. For instance, a person will practice a healthy lifestyle if he or she has encountered a person who developed a disease due to poor lifestyle practices (Ferrer & Klein, 2015). Besides, individuals who are aware of the risk of developing a hereditary chronic illness are likely to observe disease prevention practices than those with no family history of chronic diseases.

I would recommend that health promotion activities be patient-centered and address a patient’s health risks rather than providing

generalized health messages that the patient may not find sensible. Furthermore, assessing an individuals’ risk perception is essential as it helps determine their protective behaviors. According to Ferrer and Klein (2015), individuals not only need to recognize potential health risks but also need to perceive the risk at a personal level for them to take precautions. Hence, it is necessary to understand the general risk perception, individual risk perception, and how people react to information that they have a health risk.

Well done on your response Rasheeda. I think risk perception is subjective and can only be measured individually. For example, as a midwife, I can educate my patients on the risk of developing diabetes, possibilities of a big baby, or c-section risk; but it depends on how the patient perceives these risks. You may have a mom who chooses to change her eating habits and exercise daily, changing her behaviors due to the risks presented to her. Then you may get a mom who doesn\’t perceive her lifestyle of one that is risky because maybe her first pregnancy was fine without complications. This is where we as midwives would need to incorporate the history of the patient as a whole to guide our education. According to Shi and Kim (2019), integrating a risk perception attitude framework positively affected individuals\’ intent to seek mental health counseling. This increased health promotion behaviors when it came to mental health awareness. Although the risk perception framework had a positive affect, it was only amongst those who had \”favorable attitudes toward counseling-seeking behavior\”. Those who did not have favorable attitudes towards this health-seeking behavior did not have a positive perception ( Shi and Kim, 2019). This is a good example of how risk perception is individualized. It is our duty as health care professionals to continue to educated our patients of the various risks, but maybe if we individualized our delivery according to each patient, it may help in promoting health-seeking behavior changes.
