Communication is a basis in the health profession and crucial in the provision of nursing care. Nurses need to communicate and give reports to their fellow nurses in an effective manner to ensure continuity of care and also guide in deciding patient’s management plan (Drach‐Zahavy & Hadid, 2015). Nonetheless, in a majority of emergency departments, there is a shortcoming in the manner that emergency nurses give reports to floor nurses when transferring patients for further management. For instance, emergency nurses transfer patients without prior communication, proper documentation of the patient’s history, initial treatment, and management plan. Consequently, it creates confusion among the floor nurses since they may not be prepared to receive a patient and cannot identify the initiated management and the plan of care.

Benner’s theory of ‘From novice to expert’ can be applied in solving the communication problem between nurses in the ED and floor. According to Benner, for nurses to become experts, they have to develop skills and understand patient care for over time through a solid educational base and a lot of experience (Davis & Maisano, 2016). In the ED, there are beginner nurses who have little experience in emergency care and hence need guidance by proficient and expert nurses. The experienced nurses should be aware that novice might forget to communicate to other floors of an incoming patient, or document the nursing care offered. Consequently, they should orient every nurse new to the ED and provide proper directions (Persky & Robinson, 2017). This is by providing adequate guidance on how to report to other wards as well as document emergency care and treatment given before transferring the patient.

On the other hand, beginner nurses should be ready to develop their nursing skills, get experience, and accept corrections (Persky & Robinson, 2017). Besides, they can enquire from expert floor nurses if they have given a thorough report and documented the necessary information. Benner’s theory is applicable in solving the communication problem among nurses since the shortcoming could be a result of new nurses lacking orientation and guidance from the experienced nurses (Persky & Robinson, 2017). If their communication skills are not developed when they are beginners, the shortcomings may persist in their practice. However, if they are guided, they will polish their reporting and documentation skills, and this will decrease the incidences of transfers without prior communication and inaccurate patients’ reports.

Application of Benner’s theory of ‘From novice to expert’ does not differ when offering nursing care to individuals, families, communities, and special populations. In medical-surgical nursing, nurses require a lot of knowledge and skills in caring for patients who present with various ailments (Persky & Robinson, 2017). A beginner nurse needs to acquire the necessary nursing skills in caring for patients and also understand the rationale for their interventions (Aliakbari, Parvin, Heidari & Haghani, 2015). Furthermore, nursing students need to familiarize themselves with nursing practice by having clinical rotations to help them gain skills and apply the knowledge taught in class.

Beginner nurses also need to polish their nursing skills in the medical-surgical unit to be able to offer quality nursing care to

patients and their families. Besides, they need to master the art of history taking, patient assessment and administration of treatment and this can only be successful if they are guided by experienced nurses (Oshvandi et al., 2016). For instance, a beginner nurse may find it difficult to insert an IV cannula, but with the guidance from an experienced nurse and a lot of practice, he/she may acquire the skill. Moreover, with regular training and further specialized education, a beginner nurse can climb the ladder up to the expert level.

The Benner’s theory can be applied in the allocation of patients in the medical-surgical unit to nurses by allocating critical patients to proficient and expert nurses and stable ones to beginners (Persky & Robinson, 2017). For example, a post-operative patient who needs constant monitoring should be given to an expert nurse who can quickly identify a complication and offer intensive nursing care. On the other hand, a beginner can be allocated to a patient with PUD who does not require intensive care. Furthermore, beginners can be allocated with experts so that they can learn, develop skills, and get guidance from them. For instance, blood transfusion can be done by an expert with the assistance of a beginner so that the latter can learn the procedure and be able to perform it in the future with minimal instructions.

Based on the required readings for this week, previous lessons and experience as a nurse, it is evident that nursing theory is necessary for nurses to offer quality care and navigate patient needs in the ever transforming and complex nursing profession. Nursing theory provides a framework that guides the nursing practice in using concepts and relationships in patient evaluations and interventions (Butts & Rich, 2018). If nursing practice lacked theory, possibly, there will be loss of separation and clear distinction of the profession. Society has historically considered nursing as a vocational occupation and not a profession where nurses are expected to carry orders by physicians and clinical officers, especially in developing countries, without any form of accountability. However, through the development of theory as proposed by Nightingale in her notes over a century back, nursing is now an evolving profession and academic discipline as well as a science. Pioneers in the profession established nursing theories and models to emphasize the role of nursing profession in enhancing patient outcomes and quality healthcare delivery. Nurses possess critical thinking and scientific knowledge as well as ideas that they can use to improve patient care delivery (Gilbert, 2020). They can develop individualized interventions focused on health promotion, disease prevention and long-term care for patients with terminal conditions.

Nursing theories help to instill identity in nurses, enabling patients and other healthcare providers and professionals as well as managers to appreciate nurses’ roles and individual contributions to healthcare promotion and patient quality care. Nursing theories allow nurses to offer patient-centered care, utilize evidence-based practice interventions in health promotion, and development of professional values and work ethics to attain better patient outcomes (Younas & Quennell, 2019). For your response post, you do not need references as personal experiences would count as response posts. If you however cite anything from the literature for your response post, it is required that you cite your reference. You should include a minimum of THREE references for papers in this course. Please note that references should be no more than 5 years old except recommended as a resource for the class. Furthermore, for each discussion board question, you need ONE initial substantive response and TWO substantive responses to either your classmates or your instructor for a total of THREE responses.
