Discuss how nurse managers and nurse leaders contribute to the reengineering of health care.

Nurse leaders and nurse managers are important in nursing because they have a major influence in reengineering of health care. “They act as change agents by developing strategies for quality improvement” (Helbig, 2018). They are the ones that see the trends in patient care in their organizations and propose to implement a change if it’s needed. In addition to reshaping the care delivery, it would also enhance an organization’s culture (Thew, 2018). This is not only limited to quality care and safety for patients but for the nursing staff also. They make sure the workflow conditions are smooth, the staff is well educated with the latest practices, and the morale of the unit is appropropriate. Strong nurse leaders and managers will be proactive leaders and empower other nurses (Thew, 2018). They are the biggest advocates for nurses. Without the influence of nurse leaders and managers, nurses today would not have the voice to help make changes in the standards of the nursing profession or the respect it deserves.

According to Bell, “the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted more than ever how important strong leadership is for the nursing profession. The pandemic forced the nursing profession to respond to a rapidly changing and increasingly complex healthcare environment.”

All of this change does have a silver lining. “The pandemic served as a catalyst for change and innovation as nurse leaders from all levels of nursing responded to the new challenges presented by COVID-19,” said Bell.

In order to accommodate the increased demands of managing patient care during the pandemic, “nurse leaders [across all levels of the profession] created new models of care and new workflows using technology such as videoconferencing and telemedicine to communicate with patients and with other healthcare workers. They also identified ways to prevent shortages from the overuse of scarce resources such as personal protective equipment (PPE). ” Bell said.

Now that the pandemic appears to be turning a corner, the innovations created by nurse leaders across the healthcare setting will endure, helping to advance the profession as we move into the future.www.snhu.edu/…/health/what-is-nurse-leadership

Yes, I agree with you Sandra. COVID-19 has definitely, like you said, served as a “catalyst for change.” There was a crisis going around the world and people were getting sick and dying for fear of going to the hospital and contracting COVID-19 instead of treating their acute conditions. Telehealth was the answer. “The aim of this systematic review was to identify the role of telehealth services in preventing, diagnosing, treating, and controlling diseases during COVID-19 outbreak” (Monaghesh, 2020). I was one of those people that relied on tele-medicine. I have a child with asthma and needed medications. Fortunately I have a blood pressure machine, pulse oximetry, and a stethoscope to help aid the physician in treating my child.

Hi Dorothy,

I agree with you. Since the nurse leaders generally perform the role of; overseeing the care of the patient, reviewing the performance of the staff, make decisions pertaining to the management and budget they can contribute to the re-engineering of health care such as making efforts to help the healthcare organization they are serving to reorder its priorities, and provide more efficient care to the patient.

Hello Dorothy,

well stated. Nurse leaders and manager are the foundation of areas that need improvement. They oversee the organization and use constructive criticism from employees in order to determine what area needs improvement. This is important in order to contribute to the reengineering of health care. “To be responsible to the health care organization, nurse leaders must focus on staff providing quality care while meeting productivity and quality indicators. Leaders and managers have always focused on care delivery, but now they must focus on the outcomes of delivery provided” (Helbig, 2018).

Effective communication is vital to reengineering healthcare. Managers that are effective communicators make a big difference in the success of their employees (Helbig, 2018). Nurses that communicate effectively are also important. Proper communication between patients and between physicians can make a positive impact in healthcare and promote a healthy working environment (Helbig, 2018). Proper communication techniques are imperative for reengineering healthcare.

It is characterized as a fundamental rethinking as well as radical restructuring of business processes, like price, quality, services, as well as speed to produce major gains in modern performance metrics. When it comes to health care, re-engineering is a common strategy for lowering costs while simultaneously raising quality and safety standards. (Helbig, 2018)

Healthcare reengineering is a complex process. Organizations must carefully assess their own needs and resources before embarking on a reengineering project. In addition, successful reengineering projects require strong leadership and buy-in from all stakeholders, including providers, patients, payers and government officials.

There are a number of challenges associated with healthcare reengineering, including resistance to change, lack of data and analytics capabilities, and the need for significant upfront investment. However, the potential benefits of healthcare reengineering are significant, and organizations that are successful in reengineering their delivery systems can achieve improved patient outcomes, increased efficiency and cost savings.

The re-engineering of health care is a complex and multi-faceted process. It requires the involvement of many different stakeholders, including nurse managers and nurse leaders. These individuals play a vital role in leading and supporting their teams through organizational change. By doing so, they are able to improve the overall quality of care within their organization.

Nurse managers are responsible for the clinical and operational management of a unit or department. They provide direct supervision to nursing staff and collaborate with other members of the interdisciplinary team to ensure that patient care is delivered safely and effectively. In addition to their operational responsibilities, nurse managers also play a key role in leading change within their organization. They are responsible for developing and implementing initiatives that improve patient care and safety, while also reducing costs.

Nurse leaders are responsible for developing and implementing the strategic vision for their organization. They work closely with senior leaders to ensure that the organization’s goals are aligned with the needs of the patients and families they serve. Nurse leaders also play a key role in advocating for change within the health care system. They work to improve access to care, reduce costs, and improve the quality of care. (Helbig 2018).
