Differentiate between leading and managing NUR 514
Topic 2 DQ 1
In the healthcare industry, leadership and management skills are critical for nurse practitioners. Nurses are both leaders and managers, entrusted with critical responsibilities and roles focused on providing high-quality care and improving patient outcomes. While leadership and management are related, they are distinct. The practice of leadership entails providing direction, motivation, and inspiration for others to follow in order to accomplish common goals and objectives. Without formal positions, leadership is an informal aspect in which one can inspire and motivate others to work toward a common goal. Management is the process of directing teams and employees to ensure that best practices and organization are followed in the delivery of care (Kantanen et al., 2017). Imperatively, managers are concerned with preserving established practices, processes, and activities. Nurse managers direct daily processes, activities, and routines in healthcare settings. Management entails a hands-on approach with clearly defined roles and responsibilities based on job descriptions and positions held by an individual. Managers ensure that care is provided and treatment plans are effective in the nursing setting. Leadership and management are mutually reinforcing concepts, with many managers serving as leaders and several leaders serving as managers.

An advanced registered nurse can both lead and provide managerial skills based on their positions and training. Nurse managers are
leaders who offer direction and have certain functions that require them to demonstrate leadership attributes in their interactions with their subordinates, staff and patients (Weiss et al., 2019). As managers, their daily tasks include staffing, planning, organization, direction, controlling, and leading. A successful a manager should possess leadership attributes like delegation and active listening while an effective leader should have planning skills, and better organizational skills. The implication is that Advanced registered nurses are both managers and leaders in their nursing practice because of the need to attain an effective organization focused on quality care delivery.
