Principles of Adult Learning

In adult learning, there are six major principles to be observed. These principles include; higher sense of self-motivation and direction, use of life experiences as learning points, focus on achieving goals, aligning the learning to its relevance, promoting practical approach and pursuit of help and mentorship (Gouthro, 2018). Adult’s learning requires that they learners be aware of what they are learning, why they are learning and how the learning process will be done. This helps them in guiding them through decision making points. Additionally, it makes the students self-directed and governed. They do promote and active model of learning where they are directly engaged either by doing or being practically involved in the entire process. As one progresses in the learning process, it is imperative to note that adults often learn from intrinsic motivation driven by pleasure or interest rather than extrinsic motivators like salary increment or rise in status.

These principles find practical applications in developing programs for end user training. It promotes designing the program to be as practical as possible and should be relevant to address the needs of the learners. Moreover, its design should allow direct involvement such that there is planned learner feedback mechanisms and direct consultation. The learner recommendations are put into consideration to make the teaching program suitable to the learner’s condition and needs. In developing the practicability of the teaching program, it is crucial to use case studies and scenarios that bring in the relevance and taps from the learners’ previous experiences (Yusuf, 2021).
