Cultural Diversity Topic: African American/Black Population
The African American population in the United States is estimated to be about 42 million, which accounts for approximately 13.2% of the population (Starks, 2023). This population differs significantly from other populations when it comes to access to healthcare and the treatment of mental health illnesses. Numerous factors, such as historical adversities that resulted in socioeconomic inequality and institutional racism, might be blamed for the discrepancy (Starks, 2023). According to demographic research, even when they have the money, they are less inclined to receive antidepressant therapy, more likely to obtain mental health treatment, and more likely to suffer from schizophrenia spectrum illnesses (Starks, 2023). The best practices for an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) interacting with this population are to actively listen and educate oneself about their culture to provide culturally competent care, proper screening, follow-up, and ensure consistency in care (Starks, 2023).
