For instance, transgender individuals may require gender-affirming healthcare, including hormone therapy or gender confirmation surgeries. Healthcare professionals must know the appropriate protocols and provide compassionate and affirming care to transgender patients (American Medical Association, 2020). Similarly, understanding the specific sexual and reproductive health needs of lesbian, bisexual, and queer women is essential for providing comprehensive care and addressing their unique concerns (Bass & Nagy, 2022). Additionally, healthcare professionals must be aware of potential vulnerabilities LGBTQIA individuals may face. These vulnerabilities can arise from systemic discrimination, healthcare disparities, and healthcare provider bias. Studies have shown that LGBTQIA individuals often encounter barriers to accessing healthcare due to fear of discrimination and negative experiences with healthcare providers. By recognizing and addressing these vulnerabilities, healthcare professionals can create a safe and inclusive environment where LGBTQIA individuals feel comfortable seeking care.
As healthcare professionals, we must comprehensively grasp the historical context, distinctive health considerations, and potential vulnerabilities specific to the LGBTQIA community.
