According to the Oxford Dictionary, ethics is defined as “moral principles that govern a person’s behavior or the conducting of an activity”. Understanding the importance of ethics is a main part of the nursing profession. Ethics is also described as the character of an individual. Everyone has their own beliefs and values. It is these beliefs and values that determine our decision-making and actions. “Ethics within healthcare are important because workers must recognize healthcare dilemmas, make good judgments and decisions based on their values while keeping within the laws that govern them. To practice competently with integrity, nurses, like all healthcare professionals, must have regulation and guidance within the profession” (Haddad & Geiger, 2023). Because ethics in healthcare is so vital to the quality of care delivered, continued education of nurses is important to maintain ethical values. The American Nurses Association (ANA)has developed a code of ethics for nurses to help guide them in carrying out nursing responsibilities in a manner consistent with the quality of nursing care and the ethical obligations of the profession (ANA, 2015). Although the roles and responsibilities of the APN are different, the ethical responsibilities are the same for all nurses. The nurse must acknowledge the four main principles of ethics, which are autonomy, beneficence, justice, and non-maleficence, in every situation.

The American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) provides a code of ethics for Nurse Informatics which focuses on health information alone. The AHIMA Code of Ethics serves six purposes for Health Information Management (HIM): “Promotes high standards of HIM practice; Summarizes broad ethical principles that reflect the profession’s core values; Establishes a set of ethical principles to be used to guide decision-making and actions; Establishes a framework for professional behavior and responsibilities when professional obligations conflict or ethical uncertainties arise; Provides ethical principles by which the general public can hold the HIM professional accountable; Mentors practitioners new to the field to HIM’s mission, values, and ethical principles” (AHIMA, 2019).

The International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) has developed a universal code of ethics for all nurse midwives to promote quality of care. “The code addresses the midwife’s ethical mandates in keeping with the Mission, the international definition of the Midwife, and standards of ICM to promote the health and well-being of women and newborns within their families and communities. Such care may encompass the reproductive life cycle of the woman from the pre-pregnancy stage right through to the menopause and to the end of life. These mandates include how midwives relate to others; how they practice midwifery; how they uphold professional responsibilities and duties; and how they are to work to assure the integrity of the profession of midwifery” (ICM, 2023).

The code of ethics as outlined by ANA is directed toward all nurses in every specialty of nursing. “Its function is to provide a succinct statement of the ethical obligations and duties of every individual who enters the nursing profession. It provides a nonnegotiable ethical standard and is an expression of nursing’s own understanding of its commitment to society” (Haddad & Geiger, 2023). With the specialties of Certified Nurse Midwife and Nurse Informatics, there are more specific principles in addition to those by ANA. The underlying goal for all principles of ethics in every specialty of nursing is to provide patient care with integrity and compassion and treat all patients with dignity and humanity.

Ethical guidelines within a profession distinguish right from wrong and how it can be applied through critical thinking and decision-making (Weberg, & Mangold, 2023). Nurses of any specialty and degree face ethical dilemmas every day and must adhere to promoting the advancement of a healthy society. The American Nurses Association (ANA) sets forth the code of ethics for nursing which clearly defines responsibilities, attitudes, and moral standards for the profession (ANA, 2015).

Nurse educators and clinical nurse specialists are two examples of advanced practice nurses who must comply with ethics in their chosen career path. Both nursing professions require up-to-date knowledge of assessing and implementing evidence-based practices while effectively communicating the purpose and necessity of their application to the task at hand. Clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) face ethical dilemmas related to best practice outcomes for patients, nurses, and the organizations for which they work (National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialist, 2023). Nurse educators in comparison confront ethical dilemmas related to program and curriculum development for nursing courses and how best to demonstrate theories and concepts to seasoned nurses and nursing students.

An example in which a CNS and a nurse educator might respond differently based on ethical guidelines is in the care of a difficult patient. A CNS could directly speak with and de-escalate a situation in which a patient was being demanding, offensive, or abusive. A nurse educator would be able to provide appropriate training and education materials for nurses who might have to deal with this type of patient.
