Miscommunication happens during conversations due to different reasons. Key among them is perceptions and assumptions that people build due to situations and interactions (Clement, 2019). As healthcare providers, making assumptions about colleagues and patients can have devastating effects as it leads to misinterpretation and unnecessary conflicts that may affect the delivery of quality care interventions.

One incident where I miscommunicated with a patient entailed asking her about the last time she felt dizzy before checking into the emergency room. The patient had presented with symptoms like headache and fatigue and had watery eyes as well as could not see clearly. However, when I implored her to help me understand the issue, she felt uncomfortable and even demanded that I withdraw my sentiments and questions.

The assumptions that I made during the conversation included feeling that the individual thought that I was judgmental, believed that I was not ready and willing to make an assessment, and maybe she was afraid of even a COVID-19 test request. The implication is that, she had attributions that I thought were not necessary during the conversation.

I realized that she misinterpreted my probing as a nurse and thought that I should not have approached her that way. This case demonstrates the need for providers to have effective ways of dealing with perception as advanced by the video.
